Currently you need a 2.0 to transfer into Industrial Engineering (not out of) but that changed to. 2.6 as of next quarter. I am guessing that’s where you got the 2.0 from.
CE is wildly different from CS (and Industrial Eng for that matter).
Congrats on Cal Poly, you have nice choices even if maybe not your ideal starting point.
@eandesmom I am am so so sorry I meant Computer Engineering the whole time the acronym is CPE but I kept on putting CP which is Civil, I am so sorry, it is all very overwhelming, on one hand I am just so excited to get into Cal Poly but now am confused , does it make sense now with regards to all that I put earlier, I meant Computer Engineering, I want to transfer to Computer engineering and I am confident I do qualify for it even now but I made mistake while applying…
What you posted is for students who want to transfer IN to Industrial Engineering, not OUT. You want to switch (transfer) OUT of Industrial and IN to CE or CS. Industrial has a lower gpa standard to transfer into although as you can see that changes next quarter to a 2.6.
Students wanting to switch TO the following majors from within the College of Engineering (CENG) must have a 2.5 Cal Poly cumulative GPA and be in good academic standing:
Civil Engineering (CE)
Environmental Engineering (ENVE)
Students wanting to switch TO the following majors from within the College of Engineering (CENG) must have a 3.0 Cal Poly cumulative GPA and be in good academic standing:
Computer Science (CSC)*
Software Engineering (SE)*
So that means in order to be successful you’ll need a min GPA that first quarter of a 2.5 for CE and a 3.0 for CS. You can attempt a change of major twice it appears but you have to prove a few things and attend a workshop the first time and meet those requirements (ability to grad in 5 years, things like that it looks like).
@StressedInCA What I remember from the Cal Poly tour is it IS possible to transfer from one major to the next IN Engineering. If you had said you were in CE at Cal Poly I’d say go there. But Industrial Engineering is quite different than CS. If you go the Cal Poly route be prepared to not be able to transfer.
If your end goal to to get into a UC other than Riverside. Go to Community College, transferring from Cal Poly isn’t a good plan.
Honestly I’d probably suggest Riverside if CS is your goal. All the UC’s are good. If you get really good grades the first two years you could try applying for transfer after your first two years to a ‘better’ UC. Or you might find you love it there. Riversides’s CS has really really improved over the past 25 years and it’s a good solid program. You really can’t go wrong in any of their schools.
P.S. My son just got in CS at UCSC. We are very happy about that.
Gotcha! Then yes, a 2.0 first quarter is what you need at a minimum.
What isn’t clear is any other requirements or caps due to impaction. It couldn’t hurt to call and talk to them about any other barriers that might exist.
@StressedinCA Have you looked at how much the Industrial Engineering first year classes overlap with Computer Science? If it’s all GE, math, physics classes that is one thing. But Cal Poly is known for starting student in major classes right away. A into to Industrial Enginerring class isn’t going to be useful for a Computer Science major.
@eandesmom yes, I think talking to someone at Cal poly will help @curiositycat333 I looked at the flowcharts for both majors and Math - Calculus 1 is common to both, there are 2 other Computer courses for Computer engineering that I might get credit for since I am doing AP CS right now and also I have taken 2 PLTW classes at my high school, I really need to go sit down with someone at Cal Poly with my Transcripts, whom should I approach?
@eandesmom@curiositycat333 thank you so very much for this help, I know it is time consuming and you both are going out of your way to help, I really appreciate it.
Just because those gpa requirements are listed for transferring doesn’t mean that those minimums are going to get you into that popular programs. I’d ask the gpa’s of the students who successful in transferring or getting into the computer engineering courses and just base the possibility of transferring on that.
Many many years ago when I was in college, a friend tried to transfer from arts and sciences to the college of business. Her transfer was denied so she continued in A&S. Perfect 4.0, Phi Beta Kappa grad, but they didn’t accept her as a transfer
RIT has an overnight for accepted women in engineering students at the end of this month which D is going to (on their dime!) and the following day is accepted students day. I hope we’ll be done before then, but that should be the latest decision time for us.
@curiositycat333, congrats on UCSC! Isn’t it nice to be one step further along – final decision time…
I’ve had conversations with Ursinus regarding a merit review. To put in motion we’d need to request a FA review which seems ridiculous as we have no special circumstances beyond competing offers. So it’s a lot of paperwork for a low probability result. S17 has not weighed in on go or no go on the paperwork. I can do it of course, it’s just a pain and seems a bit silly. But I suppose it couldn’t hurt. The fact that he didn’t say no outright means I likely should. Bleh.
We also heard from UPS today regarding the final package. Ok, I found the portal updated. The kid has no clue and won’t until the mail arrives or if they email him later today.
He did not recieve any music scholarship monies but he did recieve the full theater tech scholarship, which is renewable (though titled differently for following years and does require reapplying). The tech offer, plus a grant, magically brought it to our EFC so exactly in line with the rest. UPS was a favorite for a LONG time. I don’t know if this will put it back onto his list or not. If it does it will mean going back there for more money as well. I think he will be pleased and a bit relieved at the scholarship result to be honest, he auditioned for classical and wants to play jazz so it really wasn’t a great fit although the free lessons would have been really nice!
While on the tours he’d said he wanted to do an overnight but then as the week went on and he seemed to become more solid on his major he said it was off the list as it wasn’t as strong as the others in his area. So who knows, overnights are in April. I guess we will cross that bridge once he realizes it’s now at the same price as his other tops outside of WWU.
@snoozn I just noticed RIT is flying your D out for the visit, that’s fabulous! I love that she is being courted by her top 2 like that. How wonderful and well deserved.
=D> CONGRATULATIONS to ALL the (parents) students on the recent acceptances!! =D>
Enjoy your spring break college visits. I’m looking forward to reading the final decisions for our group!
@eandesmom … thanks for the updated outcomes list. I enjoy scrolling through the lists of 2017 acceptances; especially for students on this thread!
S17 heard back from the last college. His EA application status @ JMU changed from ‘deferred’ to ‘wait listed’ (jeez)!! I was sort of hoping he would get denied (lol). I guess that makes his final count 8/8 (with an asterisk)?
Is the ED contract a scare tactic? S17 informed all the colleges where he applied that he was accepted ED, but he’s still receiving e-mails, mailings, texts, phone calls. One college replied “we can keep you on the admitted list just in case something unexpected happens”. His school counselor also ignored the ED contract – last month she sent all the colleges his 1st semester transcript even though he told her in Dec & again in Jan of his ED acceptance.
Happy Saint Patrick’s Day … S17’s having a few friends over after school to celebrate.
@eandesmom --Good news on the UPS money! (and good luck getting more). It’s nice to have choices. It will be so interesting to see how the decisions are finally made.
@snoozn–congrats on the fly-out. WashU is offering a fly-out for my S, but he already did a fly-out with them before he applied. I’d like him to do another to help him decide, but April is sooooooooo full I don’t know if he’ll fit it in.
We’re tagging on 2 college visits at the end of a spring break ski trip–to WSU, and to UC Davis. Squeezing it in, so everything will have to align just right. Fingers crossed!
Good luck to everyone still waiting, and congrats to the new acceptances! I’m jealous of the fly-outs. WTG to the kids whose colleges are doing some big wooing, whether it’s a trip or a luggage tag. And boo to the ones who are pushing for a deposit with scare tactics about housing. Nice work on the theater tech scholarship, @eandesmom!
We’re waiting on 2 notifications later today but neither are high priority, then the big reach next week. We never followed through with contacting schools for another look at merit and to be honest, I doubt we will. Senioritis x2!
Speaking of senioritis, it was conference day at TacoSchool. We do that thing with all the teachers lined up in the gyms, and I was struck by how short most of TacoSon’s teachers’ lines were. I know it’s a combination of the fact that we parents have done this many times before and it’s easy to touch base with teachers outside of the conference day, but I also know that work is winding down in the IB and AP classes so everyone is getting a little disengaged, including the teachers. Calc grade is currently a middling C but calc teacher said “he’s doing fine!” and they will be completely done with all the content for the year within a week or two.
Thus ends TacoSon’s perfect acceptance streak; he was waitlisted at Virginia Tech. I think the GPA got him there. I’m a little cranky about it, but he doesn’t care and it makes our narrowing the list game a little easier.
@tacocat333 , ah, sorry about the WL–but we want the list to get shorter, not longer at this point in the game, right? BTW, I literally (and I mean literally) lol’ed at TacoSchool. I don’t know why that’s so much funnier to me than TacoSon, but it is. And I thought our school was the only one who did the teachers in the gym thing. I hate it–everyone gets their 5 minutes, so if there are 4 people ahead of you in line that’s at least 20 minutes you’re standing there waiting. I try to find the teachers with no lines and get them out of the way, but there’s always at least two with the long lines. Ugh. We’re facing a few C’s in our house, too. Senioritis is real!
Last decision: Sophia is in at Denison, with a $24K/year merit scholarship, and, very surprisingly, a $2700 work study grant. Only school that gave her work study money. And we didn’t even submit a CSS Profile. BUT…D17 is no longer interested. I won’t lie, I’m disappointed. She doesn’t want a small school. So now she’s looking at UVM and UMass. She didn’t get invited to the honors college at either school, but it sounds like both are fairly easy to get into after first semester provided GPA is decent, and she said she would apply at either school. She views it as getting the best of both worlds–as she put it, you can make a big school small by doing the honors college, but you can’t make a small school big. I don’t know how true that is, but it sounds good, lol. Given that UVM is so much more expensive than UMass, and given that there’s no program advantage at UVM for poli sci, I’m pretty sure she’ll end up at UMass. Which seems a little underwhelming after all of this research and thinking and agonizing. I’ll get over it!
