@StressedinCA I’m sorry about my earlier comment. I’m trying to do 5 things at once, and skipped you original comment. And was referring to my own son’s situation.
MOST UC’s and Cal States you can only transfer into as a junior. You would not be able to transfer to SLO after a quarter. Particularly as SLO is on semesters and UCR on quarters. If you WANT to transfer to SLO, or UCSD. I would go to community college for two years, get good grades and then transfer. That’s how the CA system works. Although you can transfer UC to UC it’s not that common. There are really only a small number of spaces available open to transfers at the UC and most are taken by community college transfers.
What is your second choice Engineering at SLO? If it’s related you might want to choose that.
Or you can go to UCR for Engineering and hope it works out great. It’s not a bad program.
Accepted at UC Santa Cruz!!! We are done with acceptances. This is 5/7 and I basically predicted it. He was accepted at all schools but those I thought were reaches.
Congrats on the new acceptances! And to those whose news hasn’t been as good, know it is the school’s loss and our resilient kids will land where they should land.
TacoSon is 9/9 for acceptances and will hear from the final 3 this Friday and next week. They are, in no particularly order, a decent possible, a reach within reach, and the school we shouldn’t have bothered with since there’s no merit aid. We’ll see if any of the decisions are surprising ones – I guess we have all learned to expect the unexpected!
I’ve been highly anxious the last few weeks for a number of unrelated reasons but the uncertainly of where he’s going doesn’t help at all. I hate the emails pressuring us to commit, to get the good dorm, to choose the preferred freshman seminar, etc. I also don’t want to plan anything for spring break in case he gets into one of the 2 financially feasible schools this month so we can pay a visit, so I’m putting off a lot of other things that could be done that week. Ugh!
In Struggling Calculus Sons news – I type this while I bang my head against the desk. We had a snow day yesterday and he came home saying, “There might be a calculus test tomorrow.” :-? A while later, he checked the school site and said, “Yay! We can take it either tomorrow or next week.” Which would be fine … except that he’ll be on a band trip the first part of next week. During which he will not get any studying done. Or be in a calculus mindset whatsoever. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. [-O<
@curiositycat333 Congratulations on UCSC!! It must feel so good to be done. My D was also accepted at UCSC so we have a trip, planned to visit UCD and UCSC during Spring break. Have you visited already, and if so, what were your impressions of the school?
@curiositycat333 and @LilyMoon Congrats on UCSC!!! Wonderful news. If it weren’t for out of state pricing and the fact that S17 apparently is avoiding the sun, I’d have pushed USCS as it would have been a great fit for him I think. I like the size (compared to huge flagships) among other things.
BREATHE. I feel your pain on the test strategy! That kind of stuff drives me NUTS. I’ve had a lot of similar anxiety, mostly work related but the college stuff does not help an iota to be sure. HUGS.
@pct3 and @inthegarden My D went on a 12 college bus tour the summer of 2015. Out of schools like Kenyon, Pitt, Michigan, U of Chicago, Franklin & Marshall, Bucknell, Oberlin, and Notre Dame, Denison is the one school that stuck out for her. She liked the small size (her current class is 80), the beautiful campus, the people she met, the relative diversity of personalities, and “the feeling” (she couldn’t really put her finger on it). From that point on, we basically stalked them at every college fair, their local informational session, and another visit this past summer. She also had an interview here in MD with an admissions counselor (highly recommend). Even after visiting another that they would cover our EFC gap and THEY DID! Me, I love that Denison is a needs met school (this is their first year at 100% so its not named in usual needs met lists) so I was comfortable applying ED even though I knew I couldnt afford the sticker price.
I hope this answers your question @pct3. Congrats to your D. It does make things a lot less stressful when that decision is made. @inthegarden, I would def encourage you to visit. Good luck to you both!
Thank you for the warm welcome @morningside95, @snoozn, and @smakl70. Sounds like there are some very talented kids out her with some great college choices. Congrats!
@curiositycat333 and @LilyMoon --Congrats on UCSC! That would have been on S17’s list if it had his engineering major. We too are still waiting on some other UCs. Have only heard from Davis. Trying to fit in a quick visit at the end of spring break.
More news here. S17 was admitted today to Washington University St. Louis! A very different schools from the others he’s heard from so far, but he’s visited it and liked it, and the students seem really happy.
Regarding SLO, a friend’s son was looking to transfer to someplace else, but SLO’s quarter system made it difficult for him to transfer mid-year.
@LilyMoon We visited in October. We probably won’t visit again. My son has friends who attend & it’s where I went to college. So we know a fair amount about it. The school I am going to talk to my son about visiting is CU Boulder. He has never been. Need to make plans soon if it will happen.
@Hankster1361 Contrats on Washington U. Great school!!
@curiositycat333 you must be very familiar with UCSC having gone there yourself. It’s rough making plans at the last minute, hope you get to see CU Boulder.
I loved my time there–but that was almost 40 years ago (OMG, did I just say that??). No way I would have been admitted with my stats if I were doing it today.
@klinska I know that’s what I was thinking… Frustrating that my kid with WAY better stats than I had might not make it in. But the schools gotten a lot more competitive.
@LillyMoon But the UCSC Campus has changed and grown a LOT since I was there. At least 2 new colleges, many more academic buildings. Fewer trees.
Welcome and congrats to @MrylndMom’sD on Denison via ED2! You must be so happy + relieved to have a decision!
Congrats to @morningside95’sSon with a lovely selection of schools from which to choose, and best of luck for the wait on the last few schools!
Great tips from @morningside95 and @techmom99 on seeing if our kids can finagle a bit more aid or merit once said kid has finally picked their #1 choice and is ready to commit (and hopefully there is some money available from other kids who have now turneed that school down!)
@snoozn - fingers crossed for more $$ from RIT; but also very cool that Clarkson has such a high opinion of your D with the Honors Program offer!
@klinska - way to go on U-Mass for your D, and how wonderful to have that decision in hand earlier than expected.
Good luck to all the kids+parents hoping to hear from Denison by Friday. (Klinska, 93pilots, kt1969, and anyone else I may have missed!)
@curiositycat333 - today was so busy, I missed your interminable wait - so lucky for me - I just kept reading (seriously 43 messages!) - so big congrats to your Son on UCSC!!!
@StressedinCA - I think you’ve already gotten very solid advice, but maybe you should also post on the College Selection Forum? I know I’m from the East Coast, and I know next to nothing about the CA schools!
@kt1969 - Congrats to your D on Muhlenberg! And to you on the fortitude for waiting to see what was actually in the envelope! So nice when at least it says Congrats on the outside
@tacocat333 - probably too late for you to read tonight - but I so hear you on the anxious waiting for the final decisions from the colleges so that we can move on to our Sons’ 1) spring break plans and 2) finally picking the #1. Will PM you, but now have to help proofread CoyoteSon’s government project, which then has to be printed and pasted on a poster for tomorrow (actually work on project during snow day?? You gotta be kidding me - or during the entire 2 weeks it was assigned?
yes @eandesmom I got into Industrial Eng. and I am fine with CS or CE, I see that CE needs 2.0 GPA to transfer from withing college of engineering after 1st quarter.
