I posted this on the general thread, so forgive the repetition, but S committed to Purdue!!
He went with 11 apps, 8 acceptances, 2 Waitlists, 1 denial with a transfer option -
Accepted to Purdue (committed), Lafayette w/merit, Union (Scholar with merit), UMD College Park (Scholar w/small merit), Virginia Tech, CUBoulder (Chancellor’s scholarship), UMass Amherst, and Clarkson w/merit.
Waitlisted at Lehigh and Villanova
Denied with offer of Trojan Transfer Plan at USC (Cal)
In terms of price, they all ended up in the same ballpark with CU Boulder the most expensive (even with his scholarship!) and UMass/Clarkson as the least cost options. He had a 32 ACT/33 superscored, unweighted gpa of 3.75. 8 APs (counting micro and macro economics separately). Decent but not great ECs with 4 years of lacrosse, some club and musical performance, plus a camp counselor and lifeguard summer job.
@tacocat333 He is considering Michigan State, Nebraska, West Virginia and Delaware - not sure of his ordering at this moment since it keeps changing. West Virginia has made themselves the most affordable option at $12,600 for tuition, fees, room and board so despite its party school rep, we are having a hard time removing it from the list. We are going to West Virginia tomorrow for their Decide WVU Day and will visit Delaware on Sunday. We visited Michigan State last weekend, and he really liked it. I am hoping that by Sunday night the list will be shorter and that he will know if he needs to see Nebraska to make a decision since we would have to fly out there - an expensive option that we let him know we were willing to do but that he needed to be sure he needed to visit in order to make his decision since he was giving up money that could go toward college expenses.
Newcomer here - I don’t really fit into this category at the moment. Oldest D is class of 2017 whose stats above the range of this thread, but I started reading it b/c S who is next in line as class of 2019, presently fits into this category and I don’t really see him moving out of it in the next two years so I hope you don’t mind if I follow along so I can obtain useful advice for him.
@DMVmom (I’m also in the DMV), your son’s story is similar to mine, but switch out soccer for lacrosse. He’s played forever, been on well known local club team known for getting kids recruited, but for a variety of reasons, he’s just not quite at the level to be seen. Funny story, he also played club soccer for many years, tho not at the level of your son. Last year as a freshman on the JV team, the football coach approached during soccer practice and asked if anyone wanted to try out for kicker of the football team as their kicker was injured. With the blessing of his soccer coach, he ended up as kicker and played both soccer and football last year. Turns out, he’s fairly talented as a kicker, at least according to JV & varsity coaches. He couldn’t play both soccer and football again this year, so gave up soccer to focus on football. Now he’s hoping that might lead to better opportunities for him. Funny, all these years of playing (and PAYING) for club soccer and lax and now he could possibly play football in college. We’ve talked to him until we are blue in the face about importance of his grades and but his feeling is - “as long as I have Bs and make honor roll, what’s the big deal?” While we’ve never put hard pressure on him to put in more effort, we do tell him that better grades can mean better opportunities for college, and we aren’t talking top tier, but just in terms of merit aid, etc. Thank you for your detailed stats of where he applied, his stats and the financials. That is useful info.
@morningside95 , D applied to LMU this year but I don’t recall that essay at all! I read all of her essays so I’ll have to go back and look for that one to see what she wrote about. I loved LMU when we toured last year - she got in but their merit aid was abysmal. She is going to USD - just came back on Tuesday after spending the day shadowing. I had hoped for a Jesuit school like I attended but of the three she applied to, only one gave substantial merit aid to make it affordable and being 30 mins from home, she had no desire to go there. Good luck to your son as finalizes his decision.
And thanks to all for this thread as your experiences will help me my S,whose stats have him squarely in this category with two years left to go.
I’m anxious for a decision to be made here as well, but while my son thinks he will make a decision in a few days we will see. He is currently at CU Boulder’s admission day. He said last week that UofO was top choice, but he was giving Boulder a chance. He had never seen it but everyone kept suggesting it to him.
My son is also a bit anxious because he hasn’t heard about his summer job yet. Camp told him they would get back April 1st, but we both thought that odd since it was the last day applications were due. I suggested he write an email asking when he would hear, and he looked really uncomfortable about doing it. It seems I forgot to suggest he write a thank you email for the phone interview. This is a small camp that he has attended for 6 years and they know it’s his first job, so I can’t imagine they would take that against him.
@4kids4us welcome! There are several of us here with 2019 kids, pop over there, there’s definitely several with kids in this GPA range on the main thread right now. My S19 may or may not end up there, it’s really hard to tell.
@DMVmom it’s funny to hear you say that about WVU, a good friends S had the same experience and it came down to UDel honors versus WVU. He did end up at UDel and is doing well.
@NolaCAR thanks for the stats! I have them added to my update list
@endesmom We found all the way to the airport yesterday. Part of it was I brought up that question. I hope he hears soon. I can’t send this email for him. And this place is a bit casual (ok… disorganized sometimes) so I hope he hears soon. I am waiting to make some summer decisions for MYSELF bases on if he gets this job & where he attends.
Congrats! Burlington is awesome. I had two at SUNY Plattsburgh, right across the lake. It must be a relief just to have the decision finally made. I know that when my kids made their final choices, I felt a calmness descend on me.
@curiositycat333 - Good luck on the summer job. For what it’s worth, I have never sent a thank you note to any employer.
The NY rule does diddly for my family, unless I can convince my 26 year old dropout to return to college and if the rules will permit him to be judged on his own income (35 - 40K). If I sound bitter, I am a little. CUNY started charging tuition the year I started at CUNY. I kind of wish I could get some help for Techson17 so that I didn’t have to stint on my retirement savings and my current quality of life, but no good. Hopefully, Techson 17 will enjoy his college years.
It’s so funny, Evan was wearing his WWU socks and hat today so I wondered if that was a sign but no. He really loves Western and it’s nice to know if for some reason UVM didn’t work out, he has an amazing option. She will love it! We know some very cool kids headed there.
Congrats, @eandesmom! I’m kind of envious… I was so hoping my kid would choose UVM or Champlain… I just love Burlington. And we might have met you and E! Alas…
I’m thrilled that your long decision process is over, and hope that UVM will be everything he wants, and more!!! WOOHOO – go celebrate!! <:-P
