Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@Hankster1361 Sending hugs to the Hankster house and hoping for clarity soon.

@techmom99 I’m looking forward to the final big list update and then the shorter results version showing decisions.

I hope this thread can continue to be a resource for all of us over the next 4 years as our kids face their own challenges in new environments. I did look into an ADHD coach yesterday at S17’s request. Not sure we will do it as it’s pricey but he has a good friend who has seen wonderful results (according to both the friend and the mom) and he would love to not take any meds if he can. So we will see, I’m going to call insurance. It is nice in that it appears they do have a remote option so it could potentially translate as a resource.

Happy Easter to those celebrating and Passover as well!

Spring break here, though nothing fun planned. 90 days till real vacation, amazing to think how much will happen in those 90 days!

S17 is having an adulting day and will miss the annual family Easter egg hunt as he is working all day. He is very sad, it’s a cousin highlight but now that there are little cousIns they can’t time it around working teens!

He spent (longer than he should) yesterday figuring out what days in May he can even work between the spring musical and marching band rehearsal. Crazy overscheduled he will be. However the good news is he is just a grip this time. Which is what he requested. Going back to his roots he says lol. So really zero responsibility and oversight unless they make him head grip and even then it’s so much easier than sound or lights and more importantly has a lot of free time where the other jobs don’t.

Which means study time for AP tests!

Happy Easter, Passover, spring break to all!

Indecision reigns in our house too.

@eandesmom -

I am so frustrated with techson17 because he didn’t spend this break week studying for his APs. He only needs to get 3’s to get credit. He wants to study lighting as well and having 3 gen eds taken care of will open up slots for those electives. However, he isn’t ADHD, just lazy. The ADHD coach sounds good. If the person is a licensed therapist, maybe it can be billed through insurance that way. They might also be able to help devise a plan for him at school. You can also get him set up with the school counseling center - they deal with more than just homesickness and depression.

Techson is currently involved in three productions, one of which is the week before the APs.

@techmom99 3 productions??? Yikes! Although between MB practice, tech and his job, S27 has zero free time after break. I was so surprised he chose grip but happy about it, it will definitely lessen any stress.

He plans to study over break but whether he really does remain to be seen. I suspect that AP lit will just be an extra credit and not really help things but APES will definitely count towards his major so he needs at least a 3 on that and is focusing his effort there. Lit will need a 4 and I’m not sure he can pull that off but you never know.

I sent his previous scores yesterday as they will impact his June class registrations as it will waive a core required English class. I was oddly proud of him. I wanted to strike the 2’s from his record, not b/c it would impact admissions but b/c they don’t support the additional merit request. His point was that 2nd semester will show any justification more than those 2’s as it is current versus previous behavior and that to him it felt disingenuous to pretend he’d never say for those tests.

Tech starts next week and runs though and past AP’s. Very late production this year.

S17 still hasn’t made up his mind but it’s clearly down to UCSC vs UofO. Marching Band being the sticking point… UCSC doesn’t have one or it would be the obvious favorite.

As for AP’s… Well my son tends to test well. Once he learns a subject solidly, he rarely needs much review. (Wish he would just turn in all the homework & such.) It looks like he’s only on track for getting a C on AP Physics but it’s a solid C & he’s testing consistently so I’m not worried it will drop lower. But without much extra studying I would be surprised if he gets lower than a 4 on both AP’s. This has to do with the rigor of his course both Physics I & Physics II in one year. And his other AP, Comp Sci should be an easy 5 for him… He’s been getting an A+ all year in that course.

Life has been crazy busy for all of us the past few weeks and will continue until the first week of May when he takes his AP’s. Next weekend is the last competition for his winter EC. He still has to decide on a university…

My D17 has been doing some extra studying for AP Calculus A/B over spring break. She got an “B” first semester and an “A” 3rd quarter. You could have knocked me over with a feather! This is the same kid who got a “C” in Algebra 1 in 8th grade. She’s also pulling an “A” in AP Environmental Sciences. AP French 5 is not so great, but she’s not planning to take the AP test in that anyway.

I have no clue how she’ll do on her AP exams. She’s not a very good test taker and last year she had a solid “A+” in AP Lang Comp all year and scored a “2” on the AP exam. I found out later that her English department does not “teach to the AP exam”. Nice. It turns out that for Iowa State her AP grade didn’t matter since she’ll place in the higher english class anyway by virtue of her class rank and ACT English score. Still, I wasted $100 and the whole not teaching to the test pissed me off. I did check with all AP teachers this year and they all assured me that they do teach to the test. She’ll just need a 3 on her APES exam but she’ll need at least a 4 for her Calc A/B exam for Iowa State. University of Wisconsin also gives full credit for a 3 in APES, and a math credit for a 3 in Calc A/B, but Calc A/B credit for a 4.

She is still on the fence between ISU and the UW. I am taking previous advice given here and I have not broached the subject of her being a small fish in a big Wisconsin pond yet. I think I’ll cross the bridge when if we get to it. In the meantime I talk a lot about ISU and very little about the UW.

@DMVmom - Here is my favorite college comparison website: StartClass.com It provides side by side analysis of information from each school. Here is a link comparing MSU and Nebraska
http://colleges.startclass.com/compare/2088-2481/Michigan-State-University-vs-University-of-Nebraska-Lincoln

For student reviews of their schools, I like the reviews on Niche.com. Here is Nebraska’s:
https://www.niche.com/colleges/university-of-nebraska----lincoln/#reviews
https://www.niche.com/colleges/michigan-state-university/#reviews

Although both schools have a student body that is largely from their own state - about 72% in-state, I have friends who have gone to NE, and friends who have kids there now, and they say it is VERY Nebraska. They have a large AG program. Although MSU has mostly Michiganders, there are just a wider variety of types of people from MI. Some from Detroit, and it’s massive suburbs, some from the U…P, some from places like Lansing and Ann Arbor, etc. NE is mostly rural. No big cities. For example, NE is 75% white and MI is 65% white. NE definitely leans more conservative, overall, but has a lot of good, fairly wholesome kids, which may be what your S wants, since she does not like the partying atmosphere. NOT that kids don’t drink at NE, I am sure they do, but I would guess it’s a bit less than MI.

Check out the reviews on Niche.com, by clicking on the drop down box, and you can see “Party Scene” is one of the areas you can read about.

Good luck to your D on finding his home!

PS> Are you able to find out how many students are accepted off the waitlist?

@eandesmom - Again, very happy for your DS, and I know what you meant about “the head” being at UV too, since they had a really strong environmental program.

My S is completely undecided, but he’s a dreamer, and currently says he’d like to work in the Foreign Service, overseas. I’ve warned him that you get sent to some pretty far-flung corners of the world, if you are fortunate enough to get a position with the State Department, so we’ll start with study abroad, and see how that goes.

St. Olaf College does have a wonderful program for fall of Jr year, called “Global Semester.” 20-25 students travel to several countries, for 4 months, with their teacher in tow. They go various places, but spend 1 month in 3 different countries. In the past it’s been Cairo, 2 cities India & Beijing, but with the current turmoil, they are headed south, to Buenos Aires, instead of Cairo. They also stop for 1 week in cities like Rome, Jerusalem, Bangkok and Hong Kong. S17 is definitely interested! He has wonderful communication and people skills, and is improving as a student, so we are not very worried about him finding a path in life and career(s) that will work for him.

I also would like to stay in touch, through this thread, to share how our kids are doing; especially as they navigate their first year of college. Yeah for getting our kids “launched” into college! :-SS

@DMVmom My S17 is down to a choice between 2 schools–one of which is MSU. What he likes about MSU is the total big school atmosphere, but where he can make it “small,” too with the Honors College and his choice of majors (small residential college within MSU). That was also my experience way back when–I was Honors College, and my core group of friends were from my freshman honors dorm floor. Plus, back then, chemical engineering wax a VERY small major, so it was another tight knit group, but we had all the advantages of a big university. That being said, S17 is still deciding between MSU and his instate choice, UAlbany.

S17 is off school for spring break, and I’m hoping he has a school decision by the end of the week. I’m trying to give him space, so I haven’t brought up anything except asking if he’s heard anything about the Albany law program–nothing yet, and when I suggested e-mailing the pre-law advisor, he worried about bugging them. 8-| I may bring it up again, because that last piece of the puzzle may or may not influence his choice. Right now, I think MSU is ahead due to overall program, school experience, and study abroad scholarship, but he’s very interested in the NYS gov’t internships at Albany, plus the potential safety net law school and the cost advantage from Albany…

He’s also (in theory) getting ready for 5 IB exams and 1 AP exam. I think the IB History, English, and Psych should be fine, but Bio and French could be interesting… He won’t be able to use the credits in History or Bio anyway, but needs reasonable scores for the IB diploma. (Long story–the 1st year of his IB Bio & History HL classes are AP classes, and he has 4’s on the APs…). Then there’s Calc… His grade has slipped to a C, and I have little hope for the AP exam. I also don’t want him to place into calc in college because he doesn’t need it, so we’ll see what happens. We talked about it, and he’s such a social science kid–he said, “I can compare and contrast the War of 1812 to the Mexican American War for hours on end, and discuss causes, effects, and policies that were influenced for hours on end, but I can’t calculate the rate of change of the radius of water draining from a funnel to save my life.” How is this kid MY child?! >:D<

@rbc1999 - I have visited both UW and Iowa St and really liked both campuses. My cousin went to UW, so I have been visiting there since I was a kid, in the 70s, and it always has been a favorite, but we really liked our visit to ISU, in the fall of 2014. Many kids from our MN school attend there, and they are very happy. With

Iowa State has more of a defined campus feel, not being right next to downtown, as UW is. I just looked back at your postings, and it looks like you were due to visit there, so I assume you and your daughter had your own impressions. We were there on a Friday, in October, so there was a football game that weekend, and a LOT going on. Tons of students all over the commons area, promoting different weekend events and groups. IMHO, Iowa State would be a great option for your D! Do you know how likely it is that she will be selected off the wait list? I agree, talking up ISU is the way to go! Here is the Niche.com website, for reviews and info about ISU; https://www.niche.com/colleges/iowa-state-university/

Also, I noticed your merit offer was $5,500. Make sure that is right. My S, with lower GPA but higher ACT, got $6,500. Here is the Iowa State scholarship calculator to make sure your S got the full award he is eligible for: https://www.admissions.iastate.edu/scholarships/freshman_award_calc.php

Both are great schools! Interestingly, UW does not put any information on their Common Data Sets (I ck’d a couple of years going back) about wait-listed students. Maybe this is standard for large universities.

I shall give myself a pat on the back for catching up! Great to hear so many final decisions and exciting to follow those still deep in the process. D’s next step is deciding if she wants a single room or finding a roommate if she goes that route. I think the single is a better option, but it’s up to her now.

Regarding big/small fishes/ponds, I think RIT is going to be a good fit and hopefully not too hard. She’s at about the 75th% school-wide for GPA/testing, so I’m guessing somewhere between 50 and 75 for engineering. I would not want her to be in the bottom 50. I wouldn’t mind her being a somewhat “bigger fish” but am optimistic that “medium-big” will be fine at a school that seems to be an excellent fit.

@smakl70, congrats to your S on choosing his winner, Valparaiso U!

@NolaCAR, congrats on a commitment to Willamette!

@jmek15, congrats to your S on becoming a Boilermaker!

@eandesmom congrats to E on UVM! S18 will be looking there.

@brindlegreyhound, congrats to your D on WWU! We loved our visit and it was a tough one to let go.

@morningside95, congrats to your S on St. Olaf! Oldest D’s good friend (Russian major) loved it and is now in grad school at UMN.

<:-P <:-P <:-P

@DMVmom, sounds like your S did a great job getting in gear this year. Looking forward to hearing his final decision.

@rbc1999, my oldest D is a good but not near superstar student at our flagship who was planning on going into PT. It did not work out for her, and the necessary classes were one reason why. She went to a HS with no AP classes and only got through trig or geometry, or whatever it is that comes before pre-calc. She had wanted to double major in dance and integrative kinesiology, but the science and math classes were overwhelming. She didn’t fail any, but each semester she would end up dropping one or two classes, which really hurt her time-wise. Now that all is said and done she’ll have taken 5.5 years to get a dance degree and is not interested in three more tough full-time years of school. She has a job with a local circus that will hopefully be getting more gigs as they get more well-known and she’s hoping to make some money teaching dance as well. But the cold hard truth is that she’s graduating in May and will probably be working retail, food service or somesuch as her real money-making job. Regarding PT, she said in hindsight that she might have stuck with PT if she’d gone into a direct entry or bridge or whatever kind of program.

@CroissantMiser, my oldest, the dancer, really liked Goucher. But when she went back to audition for a dance scholarship, she found that their program was more conservatory-style than what she wanted and too ballet-focused. Could be a plus or minus depending on what your D is looking for. At her big U, she says that dance and theater are quite different in “feel” even though it’s a combined program. The dance side is pretty laid back and the BA students (like D) and BFA students aren’t treated very differently. But in theater, it’s a big deal and if you’re not BFA, you’re hardly considered a “real” theater student. I mention this because it isn’t something either of us would have known to look for during the search. Other dancers may be more up on such things!

@techmom99, well, I see the things I’m going to be thinking about with a just turned 17 son! I do get your worry. In fact, I remember oldest D actually looking up statutory rape laws because she was a year older than her boyfriend (who is now her fiance)! Okay, looks like now the prom date is not happening, but the way you were handling it sounded good to me.

@curiositycat333, that’s great your S has his summer job lined up now. Good luck on the final decision-making!

@morningside95, I double-checked. It’s definitely $5500 because of her ACT score. She’d have to score a 26 to get $6500. My D17 really liked Iowa State and I think she’ll be happy to go there. I think she prefers the UW which is right in our back yard. I agree with you about ISU’s campus. It did feel much more compact. My D met a girl from Minnesota during Greek Day and they hit it off. They were thinking about being roommates, but I don’t know where that sits with my DD’s waitlist. Both the UW and UMN-TC will let her know by mid-June, but UMN is #3 on her list. One disadvantage of ISU is that they have a pretty low 4-year graduation rate compared to the UW.

Congratulations on your DS’s choice of St Olaf! That’s a really nice school.

@snoozn, I’m sorry it didn’t work out for your DD :(. It does sound like dance is where her heart is. I looked at those direct entry or bridge type programs but my DD didn’t have the minimum ACT to be admitted. They still require you to have a specific GPA in the prereqs to be admitted to the PT portion of the program and they still have have weeder classes to reduce their PT class size. I had the feeling that they were used to entice kids to go to one school over another but many kids drop out of the program before they bridge from undergrad to DPT.

I don’t know a lot about RIT. Did you say your D will be studying engineering?

Decided to update my pic and copy everyone else. I feel like I’m slighting my oldest though so not sure how long I’ll leave it at Valpo.

Reading everyone’s decisions (and options still available) I’m amazed that this group had such phenomenal options. Just shows that there’s more than a 4.0 unweighted to get into some really special schools.

Just got back from our trip to CA for Decision day at UC Davis, so been off CC for about 10 days. Hope everyone is doing well and coming to decisions. My D decided UC Davis is the right place for her…so she has committed and is very excited to be an Aggie!

It would be great if we could get a post together with everyone’s final decisions!

@LilyMoon - From the island to the West Coast. Wow! Techson17 has a classmate who is going to USC but he didn’t even consider anywhere without snow (he is NOT my child). Congratulations to you and your D.

Grrr.

S17 got a call today that an outside scholarship he applied for had never received his transcript. Yeah, because the kid never requested it, didn’t realize “he” had to and of course didn’t get the scholarship done while I was in town and instead did it last minute while I was out of town and he and H were trying to get all the pieces out. Clearly the QC fell short (not to mention we were out of printer ink and H had to print at his office, forge the kids signature, and mail.

Pretty cute though. They told S to get it in the mail as soon as he can and I called to see if they’d like a digital copy since the school offices are all closed all week for spring break. The guy was like “what’s a digital copy? is that like a zerox?”. I guess the good news is it didn’t disqualify him. Hopefully he has a decent chance (30 out of 41 got something last year, $500 min) it’s not a lot of money but every little bit helps and while it isn’t renewable, he can apply each year.

@93pilots sorry to hear indecision reigns, hoping for clarity at your house soon!

@techmom99 allegedly S17 DID study for APES today (aka opening the Barron book and unwrapping the flash cards) but I’ll have to take his word for it as I was at work all day.

@morningside95 I think that’s one of the huge advantages of a LAC, much easier to be undecided! Yes, head and heart were at UVM. Wallet was another story. LOL!

@MSU88CHEng Giving space is good but I will say my S was relieved that I made an “appointment” to go over pro’s and cons. It forced him (in his mind) to make a decision and the relief was palpable once it was done. That is a LOT of exams. UGH.

@snoozn how are you doing prepping now for both to go away? How will that work from a S18 college search standpoint? Will you try to do all visits over the summer now?

@smakl70 I hear you, I feel a bit guilty for never using SD14’s school as my avatar.

@LilyMoon congrats on a Davis Decision! I do plan to do a final decision list but need to update the monster one first and then will be trying to get the enrollment one going.

Question for the collective. I have really limited personal data points with test taking. The older (step) kids didn’t share their test scores with us and S17 only took the ACT twice. Which means my only benchmark is S17, where he started on his first baseline test and then the 2 he took after a test prep class (which was mostly 1:1 work). I do think he could have improved it further but not likely more than 1-3 points.

S19 took the SAT last weekend (practice) and will take ACT this week as diagnostic tools to determine which one to prep for. As my experience is almost wholly ACT based, what, in people’s experience is a realistic improvement that might be seen on the SAT with test prep? And in like fashion, what did most folks see for improvement on the ACT?

@eandesmom D17’s SAT went up 30 points the second time. But her reading went up by a lot and her math went down by a little. Ugh. Fortunately, most of the schools to which she applied super scored.

@eandesmom S17 didn’t do a lot of test prep–I think he only took 1, maybe 2 practice tests out of prep books… His 2nd SAT went up 50 points and his ACT went up 3 points–but the 1st time he took the ACT he was coming off a killer week and was totally sleep deprived (fell asleep in the car as I was driving him ~15 min to the testing location). I think his improvement was more about familiarity with the tests. And he was more comfortable with the SAT, but I’ve heard different kids like the ACT better…

Techson17 took the ACT three times and the PSAT twice, but never the SAT. His first time with the ACT the request for accommodations had been denied and I think he had a 21 composite. I appealed and he had time and one half the second two times. I used a math tutor but nothing for English other than prayer (and I’m pretty much an agnostic). The second time he got a 24 composite and the third time a 27, with a 24 in math, His superscore would have been 28. I felt the ACT was better for him because he is dyslexic and dyscalculic, but likes science and social studies. Math was his lowest score but he did a 29 on science and a 32 in english. He barely did the HW the tutor assigned and I don’t think he did a single practice test and he might have done better had he. I think he should have still wound up at the same school, but he might have gotten a little more money. I didn’t send the first score to any schools.
