Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@CoyoteMom Ha ha, yes, I use you guys with my friends but sometimes we say “You all” to be PC.

I posted this on the main thread but thought it would be fun for everyone here since we’ve lived all over! The above is one of the questions.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/12/20/sunday-review/dialect-quiz-map.html?_r=1&

Even though I’ve lived outside of Phila for half of my life, my roots from North Jersey won!! Take the quiz separately from your family members (if you’re from different parts of the state/country) and then discuss the questions afterwards, we were just cracking up!

As far as AP Physics, the studying was causing my d too much anxiety. I told her to skip the test, seriously, it wasn’t worth the anxiety and she’ll have to take Physics again in college anyway no matter what her score!

@CoyoteMom and @Fishnlines29 - I am from NYC originally and always say “You guys” even when I am with only women.

Oy, I am reviewing APES vocabulary with Techson17 for the test tomorrow. I am not feeling hopeful. I am feeling even less hopeful for US Govt. He only needs a three to dispense with gen eds that he could use to take lighting electives. He has psych credit already and will, hopefully, get these 2 as well.

I also believe in the value of studying but do not think that I have managed to pass that down to Techson17.

@CoyoteMom I’ve lived in northern Illinois my entire life (though raised by Wisconsinites) and always say “you guys” when referring to a group. But my S16 (about to celebrate the happy first anniversary of receiving a pair of blue and gold turtle socks) always says “y’all”-- I have no idea how or why he acquired the habit.

@Fishnlines29 It’s tempting to say the same thing about the Physics exams to my son. But he’s been diligently studying all weekend. I don’t think he will have a problem getting a 3 in either test. It just won’t matter much

@techmom99 I use ‘You guys’ all the time. I didn’t know it was a NJ thing. I “grew up” in New Jersey… I’ve only lived in CA since I was 16.

@CoyoteMom DS is taking AP Comp Science. He did Calc AB last year and got a easy 5. He probably could have done BC, but our school was being a bit of a pill about it. Not really a big deal, since it’s been a year it’s a good idea he re-takes the second part of Calc anyway. He really thinks AP CS will be a slam dunk and won’t need the extra time. And that he will easily get a 4 or 5. He’s getting an A+ in the class and they do more than what is on the test. It’s physics that will probably take him the entire extra time.

I’ll chime in too, @techmom99 - I grew up in Southern CA, mostly in the beach cities, and we definitely said, and continue to say, “You guys!” I thought it was a Valley Girl/Beach Girl, kind of thing. Never considered using the word “guys,” to describe a group, as sexist. Somehow, “You Girls!” just doesn’t sound right!?

Aaaaandddd . . . we have a winner! HanksterSon has said yes to WashU St. Louis. I don’t know that he ever got a great epiphany, but rather he let it settle in with other contenders, and it rose to the top. His doesn’t seem to be a “this is the one, I know it” decision, but it’s been the top contender for a while, and stayed there to the end. So that’s the one. (Kind of a little nervous now . . . any one else have that feeling after acceptance?) :-S

@Hankster1361 Congratulations on Wash U! A fabulous school! Hope everyone will sleep better at your house this week now that a decision has been made.

@Hankster1361 - WashU is a great school. I hope that your son has a wonderful experience there.

@Hankster1361 Congrats on a decision! WashU sounds like a great choice. I know what you mean about feeling nervous after the decision is made but we’ve spent nearly a year (or more) getting to this point so it makes sense.

@Hankster1361 Congrats on WashU! Yes, I still feel nervous about d’s college decision…it makes it feel so much more real that they are going off to college once the final decision is made.

Congrats, @Hankster1361 and family, on a fabulous decision!

@Hankster1361 Congrats on an excellent choice! Sometimes it’s not an epiphany, it’s more of a slow burn that reveals the right choice. And yes, as the only one so far in this group that I’ve seen who has had their DC revisit their decision and make a change (at least who has admitted it! ) I can understand the nervousness! Best wishes to your DS!

Going to post what I have so far, hoping that will encourage those of you who haven’t messaged me to send me your info so I can update the list. Was thinking that it would be great to include merit amount, GPA and SAT or ACT, so someone glancing at it can get some basic info. If you let me know the school but not the other info [and I couldn’t find it in the main list] I’d love to be able to include that as well. Also I don’t know how to format anything so this will be basic.

Lilymoon’s D UC Davis GPA 3.4 UW ACT 31
NolaCAR’s D Willamette University 23K merit GPA 4.0 ACT 29 SAT 1360
Klinska’s D UVM 15K merit 3.66W SAT 1270
techmom99’s S SUNY Fredonia $4500 merit GPA 3.43 UW ACT 27
smakl70’s S Valparaiso University 20K merit GPA 4.75/5 ACT 25
MomStudent2017’s S Christopher Newport University

CoyoteMom’s S Beloit College 27K merit GPA 3.8 UW ACT 31 SAT 1360
Cameo43’s D Worcester Polytechnic Institute 18K merit GPA 3.7 W ACT 26 SAT 1320
morningside95’s S St Olaf College GPA 3.25 ACT 28
kt1969’s D Goucher College 22K merit GPA 3.25 UW SAT 1230

Would it be better to have it alphabetized by user or school? Hmm.

Wow, the spacing looked better in the draft box. Not sure how to fix that. Sigh.

@Hankster1361 congrats!! and yes, I was nervous after the decision but it feels better as you start to really “picture” everything!

@kt1969 I think alphabetical by school would be better.

Sent son off in his Valpo gear this morning - told him over the weekend that most kids would be wearing their college gear today and was shocked he wore his (he typically resists these things).

So much stress at my house last night and today (all weekend really).

AP Lit gave them a hideous assignment, to memorize 20 quotes. Memorization and ADHD do NOT go well together. They have a test today. APES AP test is today with a monster prep packet also due today.

Poor kid is convinced he is going to fail everything, his grades will tank, then he won’t get credit for the AP tests or any extra $ out of UVM (which is a longshot at best even if the grades are there).

Oh and it’s tech for stage crew, which is daily, plus marching band, plus work. He is far more worried about the AP Lit quiz than either actual AP test. I am mad at myself as I just looked at the gradebook and even if he flunks it, his grade isn’t really going to drop and if I’d thought to look at it last night I likely could have removed a bit of stress. I get why the AP Lit teacher is doing it (wants them to be able to random quote during the AP Lit essay portion) but the impact of it on his APES studying was NOT good at all. I did text him about the weighting of the quiz, hopefully that will let him relax for the APES test and based on the emoji filled response I got back, it seems to have helped.

Not to mention it all caused him to totally freak out about maintaining gpa for scholarship purposes next year.

He seemed better this morning, I made him breakfast (AP test days are the ONLY day I do that) and lunch and told him he could skip MB practice tonight. Super ridiculous that they have it.

He did not wear gear today, was so stressed I didn’t even bring it up (though he did sleep in his UVM sweatshirt). He really needs to set up his UVM email and make sure he hasn’t missed anything but I figure since it’s not past the 1st, there really can’t be anything time sensitive (I hope).

On a personal note I had an amazing “collegiate” weekend of my own at the 100 year celebration of my sorority’s chapter. Truly amazing day and really reinforced how pivotal some of those college relationships were and my entire college experience. It made me sad not one kid has applied to the flagship…maybe I will get lucky with S19!

As for survey’s, we still need to decline 2 more schools. I figured there wasn’t a rush and thought I’d make “sure” that S was sure. I do think he is, although a tad shaken at the moment. They have run the gamut from “let us know if you reconsider” to thanks don’t let the door hit you on the way out to a drop down option of “why” which was odd. The options were

Cost
Location
Competitor
Other

We fell into “other” there which was a little frustrating.

One school did allow for a free form response and I did take the time to explain the "why a little bit there as it was one I felt bad about.

I also felt bad about the very personalized “please come here” note from a trombone player at UPS extolling the virtues of the trombone professor (who Evan really liked).

@tacocat333 I LOVE the new avatar with the taco in the talons. LOVE it! I will have to do E’s on mascots once S19 commits somewhere. I always feel a little bad as the older kids are left out of my user name but I’ve had that user name from before I knew those kids existed so…

@Hankster1361 Congratulations on WashU! Wonderful school and sometimes just letting it sit is the right thing. It doesn’t have to be an epiphany or aha moment. Settling it is just as fabulous and perhaps…more solid.

@klinska I vote for by school, alpha as well.

@techmom99 and @curiositycat333 along with @CoyoteMom

It’s nice to have a bit of a NYC/NJ connection here! You should all try out the quiz, especially if you have family that grew up in different places (as did my daughter and I)

@eandesmom So sorry your son had a rough weekend. It boggles my mind when huge assignments and/or practices are expected during a known week of stressful exams! He’ll get through it though and won’t lose his spot! Glad you had fun with the sorority reunion! It was tough for us turning down schools as well, but just remember, they accept more than they can actually take knowing declines will happen.

Tech is still taking up a lot of time for us too with year end events/award ceremonies, weekend events, etc. But, it is what D loves to do, so… I guess it’s all good.

@eandesmom , I’m SO with you on those hard days and weeks; last week was such a disaster here with so much piled on these kids just ahead of AP and IB exams. It’s telling that he has felt the pressure lift now that the testing has begun. Like some others here, I’m not all that concerned with the outcomes of the exams. High scores would be nice but they likely won’t change much of what he’s going to have to study in college.

TacoSon got a bit of a life lesson this morning as he headed to take part 2 of IB Business with a Benadryl hangover. Apparently he had an allergy attack just before midnight and this morning had to get up before the dose was close to wearing off. Instead of last week’s mini panic attacks the morning after late nights studying, he was just out of it and didn’t understand why. I guess we’ll have to put “refine OTC dosing skills” on the summer to-do list (which also includes things like tying a necktie without help). At least I was able to send him off to school in his college gear including caffeine in his logo Tervis.

@eandesmom Sending calming thoughts to your son. Hope his stress will diminish as this week progresses.

@Fishnlines29 Took the quiz, said I talk the most like people from Denver, Aurora, and Reno. Hometown is the Denver area, but haven’t lived there for 34 years. Amazing!
