@eandesmom that’s a heck of a lot to be dealing with all at once for E1! Hope that it all will fall into place and his stress level goes down. I can see that maybe it would be helpful to have assignments due in preparation for the test (forced studying), but that seems like an awful lot going on, and then there’s all the EC stuff!
@tacocat333 oh no! Benadryl foggy brain is the worst! Not sure what the alternative could have been if he was having an allergy attack (does he have different meds he can use that don’t cause drowsiness?). But yes, learning what the options are and how to time doses is definitely part of adulting.
@NolaCAR yes, I thought it was dead on for us! Pretty cool and we really had fun discussing the questions afterwards! For example, I say “firefly” but my S/O says “lightning bug” and he thought I was nuts! Lots of fun questions like that
So happy we are done, and D17 having been completely dual enrolled has no AP tests. AP tests are more stressful than regular cc college finals it seems. She took 2 full online classes and one hybrid, and 3 of her 4 classes had finals online., and the finals were not a huge percent of her grade. So she is done. She either got 2 A’s and 2 B’s as best scenario, or got all B’s worse case. S19 is taking one AP test, but not until next Thursday . not stressing over it, as it will be his first test, so more like a practice run for next year.
Big thing is that in less than 5 weeks D will be working at a summer camp. She needs to get all her Dr’s appts done, as she needs a 2nd vaccine, needs to see her “femaie dr”, go back to allergist, and we need to get a new psych ed done. still working 3 afternoons a week as a nanny.
S17 had decreed that the APES AP test went “pretty good”. So that’s good! It’s funny, in general I know APES is viewed as an easy AP but his teacher is of the (admitted up front) grade deflation mentality with that class. I really could care less about how he does on AP Lit. It’s an extra credit that may not mean a thing other than extra credits. It will count but not towards anything he needs.
@Fishnlines29 I’ve seen that dialect survey before, it’s fun. I did get the same result…potato bug is definitely a PNW thing! We’ve got a solid 3 weeks to go of tech. I’ll throw myself a party this year when it’s over. LOL! Actually I will probably cry at the cast party and I am NOT a crier.
@tacocat333 boo on the Benadryl hangover, I’ve definitely heard of that happening to people. It doesn’t work (at all) on me so I can’t relate directly but it sounds foggy.
@klinska both of the assignments were brutal with pretty short turn arounds. BUT cramming, honestly, for many of these kids is the way to go so I can’t say I disagree with it. Unfortunate for S that his two AP tests are so close together but that’s how it goes sometimes. However I do plan to remind him tonight that plenty of kids get into, go to, have decent grades and graduate from college without taking a single AP and never make it to pre-calc. He will be fine. He just needs to breathe.
@eandesmom I swear D18 has the same APES teacher except we are in socal! For a so called easier AP she definitely bought into the grade deflation mantra. Most seniors in the class regretted taking it.
Wow, @Hankster1361 - your S had some very good choices. Congratulations on Wash U. It’s a fav up here in MN, for the kids that can get in. Hope HanksterSon is very happy there, and that you and he will be feeling even more positive about the decision, as the fall approaches. Maybe joining the Wash U Class of 2021 Facebook page will help? We know a couple of 2016 boys who went down there, and they were very smart, interesting and well-rounded young men.
Hope things get better for your S, @eandesmom. Our S is looking for a job, as most of his activities have wound down for the year. Just Prom - this Saturday and Thespian and Concert Band banquets and attending some concerts left, over the next month. With all he went through with his car accident, S asked not to have to take the AP tests. He is concentrating on finishing strong, on his final semester and grades, and never took the classes to get AP credit, but, instead, just to be with the students most interested in learning the subject.
I’m planning S’s grad party, and am on several committees related to senior events, including our big senior grad party lock in - which occurs at our HS, right after graduation ends. SO I think I am more busy than S17 is, for the next month. Plus, DH is graduating too, in late May - from St Thomas U grad school, in Software Development!
S17 happily wore a MSU hoodie to school today–actually one of mine because he’s grown 3 inches this year, and most of his MSU gear is short in the arms and torso, and his fancy new MSU Class of 2021 gear hasn’t gotten here yet. I liked the way his class officers phrased the suggestion to “wear something that represents your plans for next year.” So, kids wore college shirts, military shirts, shirts supporting law enforcement, shirts representing other trades, etc. S17 said over half the class participated. We have a ton of kids who go CC for 2+2 programs into other colleges, and kids proudly wore shirts representing that–they’re a very supportive class, so any plans are celebrated.
And @eandesmom Add my S17 to the kids stressed by big prep assignments and testing. S17 seems to oscillate between not wanting to care and wildly stressing out because it’s hard not to care about tests and grades when he’s spent the past 12 years caring A LOT. He said that the 1st half of the IB Bio exam “went well” and tomorrow’s part covers less material, so it shouldn’t be too bad. He’s planning to take breaks tonight to watch Gotham and Better Call Saul, plus keep an eye on the NHL playoff game (our family is obsessed over all 3…). I think his worst day will be next Tue with the AP Calc exam in the morning and part of IB History in the afternoon. I’m definitely looking forward to the end of the testing, and I’m not even the one taking the tests–I just want less moodiness around my house!
AND thank all of you for being so supportive to everyone throughout this process. It’s nice to have a place to ask for advice, brag, or just vent without fear of judgement. This has been a nice little corner of CC to hang out these past several months…
Techson17 pronounced the APES test, “a test.” He went to school today in a plain white T-shirt, something he has NEVER done. Apparently, due to the AP’s, either the group of kids going to Fredonia (all 4 of them) or the entire school is showing up on Friday with their college shirts. My son has never been a follower.
@Fishnlines29 - Cool test. It says I am from Yonkers, which is funny because I am actually from the Bronx, just one town south of it. What the heck is a peenie wallie?
@my2caligirls S17 did know the reputation going into it, and did have this teacher before. She is tough but widely regarded as one of the best, or the best teacher in the science department. Department chair for a reason. He is glad he took it (better be since it’s related to his major, though he will go the studies/policy route versus the hard sciences) and I do think it will serve him well in college. She told the parents that her track record is basically kids getting B’s and above are likely to pass the AP test so we will see if she is right! None of us informed the kids of that though. Hasn’t helped the gpa but it’s not killed it either lol.
It really doesn’t matter all that much. It would count as an approved elective for his major but that may just simply give him wiggle room for a lighter load if needed versus adding up to enough credits to graduate early and really save $$. If he passes both, then maybe. But maybe not. AP Lit may not really count for anything that “counts” and honestly I’ll be surprised if he gets a 4 on it. But very glad when it is over!
@morningside95 The kid is overscheduled by choice. It is one of my biggest fears. I am adamant he not work at least first semester and preferably all year. He likes to work, wants the money (and will need it at UVM) but he is also involved in a bazillion other things. He is going to have to say no to some things. I will say his day went MUCH better than he expected.
I got two texts today, one after the AP test and then after the AP lit classroom test
*“It went pretty good”
“I think I aced the English Test”
*
After the second text I replied that it sounded like a pretty good day. And got this
*“good day is relative”
“but smoother than I thought”
*
:))
@endesmom Hugs about all the stress this week is giving. Marching Band AND Tech work on AP weeks?
At least for my son his main spring EC was over a week ago. And he has been doing nothing but studying physics the last few days. He has two tests tomorrow and I am going to cut him off from studying at 10:30 and send him to bed. He needs sleep more right now then more studying. And tomorrow I will send him with FOOD. This was a big mistake last year. Even if it’s just a PB&J and a pile of nuts.
There is the stress that my son can’t get a D, F or fail any of his classes or his offer will be reminded. He hasn’t ever gotten less than a C in a class so far so I don’t think it likely at this point. But he was the one who rescheduled his huge 8 page research paper to be due by Memorial Day weekend.
The big stress for him is he is LEAVING in 5 1/2 weeks. And he has a ton of decisions & plans to make before then. Shopping and packing to get done. I’ve been trying to not bug him about them till after AP’s. (Wed) But it’s hard. At least I’ve decided he’s coming home for 2-3 weeks before school starts and he can pack then.
@Fishnlines29 I’ve done that quiz before and honestly I find it very hard because a number of questions have multiple answers. It completely guessed me wrong and placed me in Wisconsin & Minnesota. Mostly based on the fact I use the work kitty-corner and lightweight bug. And ignored the fact that i use the term Hoagie & a few other very specific to NJ words. But honestly that was one where I could have easily choose 3 answers.
I did live in IL till I was 8 and NJ till I was 16. But I spend some time in England, and I’ve been in CA since I was 16. My parents come from the Nebraska and MA. And words like Aunt where taught to me very specifically. I was taught very specifically how to pronounce ant and aunt differently for example.
And S. California has rubbed off on me after multiple years here. You take THE 5 freeway to LA. “THE” is a very southern CA way of describing the freeways.
Techson17 would not get out of bed this morning. I called him in with a headache, meaning he can go in if he wakes up. He apparently came home from his AP and went to sleep. He then woke up at 11 PM, came downstairs in a foul mood and started screaming at me for messing up his sleep cycle. When I went to wake him up this morning, he cried. I am going to take him to the doctor for sleep apnea testing. My dad had narcolepsy. None of the other kids was this bad about getting up in the morning, even D.
That’s no fun at all for anyone. These kids are so stressed right now anyway, add sleep issues on top of it and that’s a snarling weeping disaster waiting to happen. I hope you can get him in soon.
I had to ask S17 about the guys party (cast and crew) which allegedly is at my house this weekend but no plans made yet. Oh yeah… we should figure that out he says. I let him know I did the rest if he declines. You rock he says. I should start doing that’s stuff. I’m like yeah, you think?
I told him setting up his college email would be a good start. I could do it for him but am not going to. I also know my version of a decline and his were different and on a few I did take the time to respond with the “why”. I confess that I waited until 11 last night on the last one.
I’m trying to figure out what to do. He wants to try ADHD coaching but it is pricey and mostly out of pocket. However, therapy is covered so I might go with a regular psychiatrist as heaven knows just someone extra to talk to during all this couldn’t hurt. But on the flip side, the ADHD place wills Skype long distance and that could be a nice resource. But pricey. Not to mention I’ve no clue when he could fit an appointment in! He wanted to go see a show downtown that a previous musical director is in and I’ve can’t see where he cold even make it to a show before the run is over.
Congrats @DMVmom, my nephew might like to go to MSU in a few years. I’m going to have to look at everyones stats to see if it’s a possibility for him, Good luck to your son!
I hope everyone had a good combination of a Decision Day and First AP Test Day!
My DD took the AP Environmental Sciences test yesterday. She said it went well and all she needs is a “3” to get college credit. She is still on the waitlist at the UW and UMN-TC. I called Iowa State yesterday to make sure that we won’t have to pay a huge cancellation penalty if she gets off the WL and chooses one of the other colleges. We’ll just lose our deposit which was just a couple hundred dollars.
@techmom99 I had to look up peenie wallie! :)) My survey said I’m from Newark/Jersey City (I was about 15 minutes west of there) but my grandparents and father all grew up in Newark, hence my accent I suppose! Mine was definitely North Jersey versus South Jersey which was my S/O’s. @curiositycat333 you’re just a USA combo! But “hoagie” places you in South Jersey. North Jersey folks say “sub”! Since I live in South Jersey now, I only say hoagie or lighting bug when someone doesn’t understand me if I were to say, “let’s grab a couple of subs and eat outside to watch the fireflies.”
@eandesmom Glad your son is feeling better, and yes, someone should throw you the party!!!
