Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@techmom99, If it is apnea, his symptoms may be exacerbated by the stress of season. Poor kid. :frowning: Hope he is felling better soon.

@eandesmom I also did the declines, and waited until after 11 for the last one, too. Ugh. Good luck with the party!

@curiositycat333 - snacks are a great idea for in between tests, but as a mom of a highly nut allergic child I admit to cringing a little at the PB&J and nuts. Not meant as a criticism, potential exposures are just a fact of life. One of the things that makes me nervous about college is that he’ll be eating every meal in a cafeteria. It’s a cross-contamination minefield.

S took today off to study for his 2 APs tomorrow. He had a “reward” day burning a hole in his pocket so it’s all legit. Of course, I’m at work so he could still be snoozing…

@eandesmom, @techmom99 and others with stressed out kids - My nephew has been seeing a therapist for years, and this helped encourage me to find someone for my S17 to talk to. We were grateful that talk therapy has worked for him, and no meds were necessary. Anyway, before he went off to college, a few years ago, he found a therapist who does sessions via Skype, so he can keep up with his regular appointments. It took some getting used to, but he really appreciates having the same person to talk to throughout the year. Just an idea.

Any word from @93pilots? So many choices. Hope all went relatively smoothly, by May 1st!

We had Decision Day at the HS, yesterday, and I helped direct the kids to their CGs and handed out cake. It was tough having APs start on the same day, since our HS students have to bus to another location for the tests to be administered! A lot of kids take AP classes here. But it was fun to see all the different places were kids are headed. Some kids forgot to wear a tee or sweatshirt, so just wrote their school down on a piece of paper and taped it to their chest. We have about 80% grad rate to 4 yr schools and 10-12% go to our very good community colleges, so there is a high participation rate for this event. The students have to put in their request regarding where their final transcript will need to go, and find out about any outstanding media center or other fine, etc. which might prevent them from “walking” on graduation day.

The HS will hand out gowns, and have a full formal sit down meeting with all 660 seniors in 2 weeks, where they will get the rundown on graduation day and our big Sr Party, the will be bussed back to school for, immediately following the grad ceremony. It’s a lock in and lasts from 10 pm to 5 am. All run by Sr parents, with some help from Jr parents with setting food and other last minute details up, while were are at graduation. We have to have the ceremony away from campus, to accommodate all the students and their family’s, and it’s in the early evening. As I’ve noted, I have a S16, and last year I felt really bad for the families of the kids a the end of the alphabet. The entire event takes about 3 hours, and a lot of extended family, and parents working on the Sr Party cut out when the announcers get to about the letter “T” !

We also have Sr Prom, this weekend. How do your kids’ schools handle Prom and graduation, etc? Do your schools have an all-inclusive party for all the senior students?

Another mom doing the 11:30pm decline last night. Bye bye, Pitt and Case; I’ll always love you. (Call me!)

Catching up from the last few exciting days!

I have a question for the kids who are getting accommodations for the AP exams. Doe your kids have IEPs? I ask because my D17’s Calculus instructor allows her extra time to take the exams even though she does not have an IEP. I’m worried that she’ll be too stressed to do things quickly on the AP exam.

@CoyoteMom, congratulations on Beloit. It’s a beautiful school and only about 45 minutes from where we live. I was sad that my D17 never applied there because it has a good pre Physical Therapy program. I love your new avatar!

@TechMom77, I also begged my D17 to PLEASE get at least a 3 on APES so she doesn’t have to take an extra class in college. I don’t think she studied nearly enough but she said that the written portion was “easy”. They took finals in APES last week (with a month of school to go …) and she said that kids who get an “A” or “B” on the final should pass the AP exam. Of course, she hasn’t scored the final yet.

I hope your son did well! The state of WI publishes the percentage of kids who get a 3 and above statewide and then breaks it down to districts and individual schools. Only about 62% of the kids from my D17’s school gets a 3 or above which is about the state average. 83% of the kids from the other HS in the district pass so there is a HUGE difference.

@Hankster1361, congratulations on your son choosing Washington University St Louis. I had a friend who went there and she loved it!

@eandesmom, I’m sorry that your son had so much stress this weekend. I hope APES went well and that the quotes will pay for themselves on the AP Lit exam. It’s nice to read about you going to your sorority’s celebration and realizing the importance of those relationships. Greek life is one the of things that my D17 is looking forward to the most. My husband and I were not Greek, but we attended a “Greek Day” at Iowa State University where we visited 5 houses and talked to countless young women and we came home with a greater appreciation of sororities and the Greek system in general.

@DMVmom, congratulations on Michigan State! Welcome to the BIG :).

Congratulations to anyone else I missed!

Glad to see I wasn’t the only 11pm decline parent!

@jmek15 oh man, now that they are in HS I find myself forgetting about the allergies. I was so careful with kid food early on, especially if identified in a classroom but 99% of the time the kids pack their own stuff. I did send S with a lunch yesterday (really to keep him from spending money on fast food after the test) knowing he didn’t have time to make it and 3 out of 4 things had nuts :frowning: Largely because I was out of lunch meat but PB&J, and 2 different bars that both have nuts…and an apple.

They take those bars with them all the time. I can only imagine how stressful it must be thinking about college although I imagine the HS cafeteria is a minefield as well.

Yes, @93pilots what was the verdict?

@morningside95

We have an Academic Awards evening, Prom, Senior Breakfast, Baccalaureate, Caen Laida Ceremony, Graduation, Senior Spree. Spree is an all night even after graduation

@rbc1999 I’ll be happy with a 3 on APES. S felt pretty good about it so hopefully…he’s called his scores pretty spot on in the past so it should be at least a 3, preferably a 4 lol.

It was an amazing event. I am blessed in the fact that about 15 of us have a dinner club and see each other every other week, do a once a year weekend getaway and a big summer family event. We have seen each other through everything over the years, it’s been a gift. The event had almost 400 alumnae, welcomed by the Husky Marching band (ok a small piece of it, but it was still cool) and so many wonderful women I hadn’t seen in years beyond my core group. About 50 or so of us went out post event to one of our college haunts and took over the place. It was so much fun. And something we need to do more often as a subset!

Just came to the realization today that because the original host of boys track regionals backed out the new host changed the date to be the same day as Senior Awards Night. Guess we won’t be attending since I know son would prefer to run his events even if there’s little chance he’ll advance to state. Unfortunately, we’re in one of the toughest sectionals and we are the smallest school too. I’m pretty sure son will be missing accepting at least one award but he can pick it up the next day in the office.

Fun! I like the name, “Senior Spree”! @eandesmom!

If folks have, and want to share 2017 admission data from their schools as they see it, I’ll update (and note accordingly) in the master list.

In the interest of providing good data for those who follow I do think this will be helpful. I’m not going to go look up each school though and I’ve no idea how often college data really updates. I also don’t know (and wish I did) what year college data, or Naviance, pulls there info from as I know I see some different results between just those two. I think both pull from CDS but the year is an unknown.

Some schools will share this years data early, and others not so much but as some data jumps a bit from year to year and those changes will impact those who follow, I thought I’d put it out there. Looks like new SAT terms are SATE and SATQ.

UVM’s data definitely jumped, I chalk some of it up to new SAT but the ACT jumped as well…I think S17’s chance for additional merit just went down. LOL!

How do I find the updated master list?

@Stitchsmom the most recent one starts here

however I accidentally cut it short so there are 2 more posts with V-Z that are about a page later. It will likely be a week or so before I post it again to be honest.

Hi, bringing up the rear to report that casa 93pilots has a Reedie in the house! It was really, really hard for my S to figure this out but he made a brave choice and I’m proud of him.

Thanks, @MSU88CHEng. I hope we will get to meet.
Thanks, @eandesmom, @morningside95, @RightCoaster, @FishnLines99, @rbc1999.

Can anyone else believe how incredibly difficult and stressful making a final decision was?

DS made the decision then doubted himself almost immediately. It took until late Monday for DS
to feel comfortable with his choice. It probably didn’t help that we had to deal with a flooded basement after the hot water heater decided to go plus all of the stress from the end of the school year and exams. It makes me wonder who thought May 1st would be a good time for Decision Day.

With everything going on in our house, @eandesmom, we were in the notify the other colleges today club that DS wasn’t attending.

Hopefully, in the near future, the stress will be forgotten and DS will wonder why he ever had any doubts.

Go Green. Go White #Spartans

@DMVmom I totally know what you mean about the decision process. We want our kids to have choices but having choices can be hard too. Wishing everyone some stress abatement, and soon.

thanks @eandesmom !

@93pilots Congratulations!!!

Wishing everyone stress abatement!

Yeah, @93pilots !! Congratulations to your son. Reed was among S16’s top choices too. With all the mystery about the intensity at Reed, now we’ll have a person on the “inside” to report back on the actual campus culture there! Please do report back, during the school year. <:-P :D/

@93pilots Congratulations!! <:-P

So weird, @DMVmom - OUR water heater broke and partially damaged the carpeting in our basement TOO, last week! DH has always wanted a tankless water heater, but with water coming in from the ground at about 45 degrees for 5 months a year, we would need a huge unit, to be able to continuously heat it up 90 to 100 additional degrees, to make a decent shower, so a plumber dissuaded us and we went with a regular tank heater.

Good news, +DH is handy and was able to save us some dough $$ by performing all the labor, himself. Just took most of the weekend, and we still have most of the stuff from our laundry room sitting in the middle of our basement family room, though! #:-S

@93pilots Congratulation on Reed!!

@morningside95 We were lucky enough to have good homeowner’s insurance (Glad my Dad is ex-military). We now have a new hot water heater and are dried out but need new carpeting, baseboards, and a paint job. I learned my lesson - after 8 years, have your hot water heater inspected annually. Certainly, don’t wait 19 years!
