Let’s see… At S17 school, some kids decorate their caps, but I’m not sure which way S will go–either he’ll think it’s totally stupid and refuse, or he’ll go all in, there will be no in between… They dress nicely underneath their gowns–khakis or dress pants, collared shirt, usually tie for guys, dress or nice outfit for girls.
The night before graduation is an optional Baccalaureate ceremony where they can sit with whoever they want, but for graduation, they sit in alphabetical order. Their graduation is the Friday in the middle of NYS Regents exams, so some seniors have to take exams AFTER graduation–I’m sure that goes over well, but both S15 and S17 had all their Regents done by end of junior year, so they were done the week before graduation. During grad week, S17 will have a walk through the elementary and middle schools to say “good bye” to teachers and be cheered on by the younger students, and grad rehearsal. Plus between now and then, there are several different award and scholarship ceremonies. I’m pretty sure I’m missing some things on my calendar already…
They also have a big lock in party after grad ceremony–they check a bag with casual clothes or anything they need a day before, so teachers can make sure nothing suspect gets into the party, and they’re bussed back to the school right after graduation for the party. I’ve been on the periphery of planning for it, but S really doesn’t want me to chaperone.
S17 survived his worst week of testing. He declared AP Calc to be “awful,” IB English “went pretty well,” and the first half of IB Psych was “awesome.” He finishes Psych and IB French next week, but other than that, he’s seriously coasting. He’s happy that his brother is home now, too–home as of yesterday from his 2nd year of college. S15 is a calming influence on S17.
The guys are all taking me to the Guardians of the Galaxy movie this afternoon for early Mothers Day fun. Happy Mothers Day to all our 2017 Moms!
At S17’s school, no caps and gowns–white dresses and suits instead. Also strict dress code. The graduation is at night followed by a lock-in party from 11:00 pm-5:30 am.
Son is done with all 4 APs. He doesn’t have to go to those classes any more, so just easy classes left and he’s loving sleeping in. S19 isn’t liking it though! S17 still has a movie project due at the end of the month, but has no finals. Graduation is early June. He has put in for his dorm preferences at college (he chose suite style instead of traditional), and has decided to try to find a roommate and instead go with random. Starting to move forward–exciting!
Happy Mothers Day!
We got some good news yesterday! My D17 came off the waitlist at the University of Wisconsin! She has until Tuesday to accept. She now needs to decide between Iowa State and University of Wisconsin. There are pros and cons for both schools and both would be good for her. I think ISU is a slightly better fit for her, but I’m leaving the choice completely up to her. I know I’ll be a little sad no matter which school she chooses and I suspect she will be the same.
I’m so excited that I’ll be able to change my profile avatar to something on Tuesday!
Congrats @rbc1999!! Looking forward to the ‘avatar reveal’!!
Congratulations, @rbc1999!
@rbc1999 congrats to your D, that is so exciting! Good luck with the choosing.
@rbc1999 congratulations! choices are good (as are new avatars!!!)
Great news, @rbc1999. I know it is difficult to consider switching gears, after your D started seeing herself in at Iowa State. Both campuses are great, so think of it as there being no bad choice. Congrats and we’ll look forward to reading the final decision!
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to ALL!
Happy Mother’s Day eveyone!!!
@eandesmom -
Happy day after mother’s day to you and all of the other moms in our little group.
Well, my D17 made her decision and she’s going to be a Baby Badger! I was still holding out some hope that she would choose ISU but I left it completely up to her. She talked to a counselor about it today and she helped her make up her mind in favor of the UW. She’s going to call the Kinesiology department tomorrow to set up an appointment with a college counselor to help her come up with a 4-year plan and to discuss taking a STEM class this summer at the local community college that works VERY closely with the UW. She met her roommate online yesterday from LA and the two girls completely hit it off.
I’ve been humming “If You Want To Be A Badger” all afternoon after she told me.
Time to learn “On Wisconsin”!
That badger is too cute! Anybody remember Bedtime for Francis ? Is Francis from Wisconsin?

We’re very proud of our badgers here, even though the real ones are kind of scary and snarly.
@rbc1999 - congrats to your D on becoming a baby badger! Love UW’s actual badger for your avatar - very confident stride! Cute mascots aside, it is so wonderful that she had two really good options and then was able to pick based on her preference. Yay!! <:-P
@smakl70 - wow - so very cool to already be done with high school!
@Hankster1361 - I think I’m even more jealous that your Son no longer has to attend AP classes, because of course the AP exam itself is the final exam, but here in VA, it is given 5-6 weeks before school is over. CoyoteSon is still a “struggling son of calculus” – he had calculus homework assigned right after the AP exam which he didn’t understand at all, so it was back to the tutor this past weekend.
Oh well, between his once a week internship on Fridays and the beach trip his senior class takes with teachers, and then a week of final exams, (and Memorial Day), CoyoteSon, who normally ignores a calendar (“what would I need a calendar for?”), has figured out that there are only 11 days of classes left over 3 weeks. Senioritis has definitely set in here. :(|)
By the way, another happy day after Mom’s Day to everyone on this thread – while we didn’t go specifically for Mother’s Day, I did really enjoy the silly fun of Guardians of the Galaxy 2: Baby Groot really stole the show…
@CoyoteMom Sorry to hear your son still has Calculus. While we still have 3+ weeks of school. (And as recently as 2 years ago our school went to almost the end of June so I know your pain. But he really only has serious homework for English & Social Studies. The class that has been giving my son the most homework AP Physics is basically done. They are doing a “modern” physics chapter that really just skimming over what modern Physics topics look like.
He had time to go to a party this weekend on Saturday and we went to see Guardian’s of the Galley yesterday. Nice to have a bit of spare hours in the day.
@rbc1999 congrats on UW decision and cool avatar that goes with it!
Sending good thoughts to everyone with late-ending schools. Out here the last day of classes was today and now it’s finals week, but seniors mostly don’t have to take them. S has a couple of projects to finish up, but the heavy lifting is over.
My nephew’s first words were heavily in the “B” category -bird, boat, ball, baby. We were walking down the hall in a Colorado hotel (he’s a Colorado kid) and he saw a guy with a Wisconsin sweatshirt on. He pointed and said “Badger!” Ah, we taught him well.
Thanks for all the well wishes!
My D17 still has 3 more weeks of school and FIVE (!) more calculus tests. The last test will be the Math Placement Test for the UW. ALL the calculus students in the class are taking it even if they are not attending the UW. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my DD will do well and places in second semester calculus. I think she will want to take Physics that uses calculus instead of algebra and neither one of us wants her to take calculus again.
@twoinanddone, LOL. That’s awesome!
@rbc1999 Congratulations!!! I will update the master doc!
Now I will have to look up the song, if you want to be a badger. It is an adorable mascot!
Lots of work still here, both APES and AP lit have loaded up on homework which frankly is super annoying! not to mention terrible timing with the school musical. Finals are almost a month away still.
