I truly hate that attitude…and feel your pain. S17 has it a bit regarding the Jazz situation. He fully intends to skip, says the credit appeal is no big deal and even if he doesn’t get credit, it doesn’t matter. Um yeah, it does. It will look terrible on a transcript and not only eliminate the slim chance of merit increase, it could end up in merit decrease! It will scream that he skipped class and didn’t care (which isn’t the case at all) He doesn’t believe me though. I know he is likely right (and have had that confirmed by adults) about the appeal…it’s the attitude that annoys me.
Unfortunately I have to focus on the sophmore at this point, looks like i’m headed to start up a 2019 version of this thread. Very rough end to the year at the moment there so S17 is largely on his own not to tank and if he does, well it’s his life lesson to learn.
Thanks @eandesmom! I spoke too soon and my D17 was right. Her French teacher just put in some grades and she now has a solid “C”. whew I’m not crazy about the “C” but at least it won’t effect her acceptance.
@rbc1999 Glad to hear it’s not as bad as you think. As long as she gets a C.
Oddly I’ve been very lazy fair about my son’s grade up until the last two weeks. Now I’m obsessing on them. Not sure why… His grades as typical have started their last minute upswing. It’s an oddity of why his grades aren’t top… He tests well. It’s all those odd pieces of homework hear and there. And that pressure on the end actually helps him as long as it’ not too overwhelming.
He said some of his friends are DONE DONE done and really goofing off. But he knew he needed to keep things up to the last minute. Although last minute is almost here. Only 3 more days of class and tomorrow is a half day. Senior finals next Thus/Friday and those aren’t a big deal for him. It’s a easy unit test in Physics, and a final in English & Government. He should be able to get A’s in those last two finals as long as he shows up & takes them.
S17 officially done attending classes! Over the next 2 weeks he’s required to attend an awards ceremony/lunch, graduation rehearsal, senior trip & evening band concert, otherwise (we both) will be sleeping in next week!. Because he doesn’t have any C’s on his 4th quarter report card, he’s exempt from taking senior year finals! Happy Days
One week and counting until graduation. Today the seniors only had to be there 3rd period for attendance. S18 could have one more absence (3 total not counting 2 college visits to remain exempt from finals so he took it today. I wasn’t upset because he went to work at the equine vet he is working for this summer. The guy is playing him $12/hour and he worked 10 hours today!
Tuesday they go in from 7:30 - 11:30 for Sr. Check in Day, Wed 7:30 - 11:30 for Sr. Clap Out (Visit to local elementary school), Thurs they go in at noon for grad rehearsal and Fri at 4:30 for graduation! He is going back to work for the vet Wed after school. So glad it is finally almost over!
Today was last full day for my senior S. I packed his lunch (yes, I am one of those weird moms who has packed a lunch for my kids nearly every day; but I pack them for H and me anyway so it’s not a big deal) with a PB&J and a note with smiley face stickers, just like I did his first day of 1st grade. I didn’t remember to ask him just how much he was “mocked” at the lunch table for having a goofy mom (but knowing some of his friends’ moms since kindergarten, I bet I wasn’t the only one feeling sentimental). Can’t believe that after 14 years I will never have to buy brown lunch bags or individual applesauce cups or SmartFood single packs again…
@LuckyCharms913 … You are not alone … I was also feeling sentimental yesterday. I have packed my son’s lunch every school day since 1st grade. Since kids only get a 30 minute lunch break, he never wanted to purchase cafeteria food because it cut down on his socializing time Once he started middle/high school the packed lunches made it easier for him to sneak a snack between classes, eat with teachers, or hang out w/friends in the band room. No notes w/smiley face stickers tho
I also pack my daughter’s lunch every day. She used to eat at the cafeteria in middle school every once in awhile, but never in high school. She also takes out some of the smaller items to snack on in the classes that allow it.
Just got back from my niece’s HS graduation in Wyoming. Too late for the HS class of 2017, but I learned that both U of Wyoming and U of Montana are less costly OOS alternatives to U of Colorado. UW total COA is $26,000 OOS and U of Montana is $32,000 OOS. CU is $52,000 OOS. So if anyone has a future OOS student who has their heart set on CU but can’t afford it, might be worth looking at WY or MT. Especially MT since Missoula is supposed to be more liberal, social justice, and sustainability oriented than Laramie - in other words, more similar to Boulder.
My niece will be attending U of WY in-state, and though she is not a stellar student, she got the Pell Grant and scholarships that are covering 100% of her COA. From what I understand, U of Wyo. also gives scholarships to OOS.
Wyoming is cheaper for Colorado RESIDENTS than CU if full pay at either school. Add the scholarships and grants (Rocky Mtn Scholars, WUE, alumni scholarships, department scholarships, study abroad Cheney grants, military benefits) and the COA at Wyoming can be HALF of the instate cost at CU.
U of Wy is a great deal for the right student. Very generous to OOS and a lower sticker price to start with. It’s definitely not Boulder, or Fort Collins, or Bozeman for that matter and doesn’t try to be but it’s really a great option. We were very impressed with the school.
For OOS I think it goes Wyoming, Uof Mt. MSU, Then CSU.
@twoinanddone Thanks for pointing this out. I have another niece who is a CO resident and would like to attend CU but I don’t think her family will be able to afford the in-state COA and from what I can tell, CU doesn’t offer much in the way to scholarships even to in-state students. I am going to recommend U-WY to her.
@Hankster1361 Thanks for the tip about MSU. I’ll have to look into it for my CO niece, too.
Graduation was a 2 day affair last weekend at D’s school. The weather for the graduation ceremony and luncheon was perfect (both held outdoors on the beautiful campus). Hard to believe I won’t be going back there for Parents Weekend in the fall. Such a bittersweet time. Onward… she took WPI’s math placement exam and was placed in Calc 3. And she has found roommates. Her online course advising session was cancelled at the last minute yesterday due to “unforeseen technical issues”. That made me laugh out loud – come on, it’s a tech school! 8-|
Just marking time here… Tomorrow is “senior skip day,” but S17 has to go in by lunchtime because they have the academic award ceremony in the afternoon. :)) He’s not impressed, but he’s doing it… Then they have 1 more week of classes, then a week of finals/Regents. He doesn’t have any finals or Regents exams, so the last week his only commitment will be graduation rehearsal.
Tonight was the local scholarship awards ceremony. They gave out over 170 scholarships to 95 students (class size is 150-ish), totalling over $140,000. S17 received 2 scholarships which will likely cover his book costs for 2-3 years. The kind of ironic thing is that one of the scholarships was sponsored by his calculus teacher’s father, and the calc teacher was presenting it (but it was for a student interested in law & politics–totally my S). Of course, S won that, so he was presented a scholarship by the teacher of the class where he has his worst grade EVER.
I know this is a bit controversial around CC, but as each scholarship was announced, the recipient’s future plans were announced (college, major, career goals) along with high school accomplishments, community service, rank in class, approximate gpa, inspirational quotes, etc… Whatever was shared had been submitted by the student, so they were comfortable sharing it. It was honestly very cool to hear what all of these kids were planning to do, and where they were going to school. A lot were going into community colleges and 2+2 programs–there’s really no stigma about that in our community. It was a nice (if LONG at 3 hours) ceremony.
Our school publishes to students and parents each senior’s name and what their plans are for next year, self-reported by the students so that they give their approval. Most were listed. I too like seeing where the class is going, if they are taking a gap year, etc.
Baccalaureate last week, and graduation tomorrow night! It’s a big deal and typically very beautiful ceremony.
Graduation is tonight, followed immediately by grad night. It’s all very exciting!
As far as I know our school only provides a generic list of the schools seniors were accepted to, with numbers in parentheses indicating how many kids will actually be attending those schools, if someone is attending.
Senior breakfast yesterday, senior dinner Monday (where they get their yearbooks), last day of class on Wednesday, one final and then graduation on June 22 and the prom the next night.
Our local paper puts out a list of the kids and their schools alphabetically. You can opt out, as I did for S12 and S14 because they were taking gap years and as D09 did for herself because “it’s nobody’s business what I do after graduation because those people I care about will already know.” Techson17 is proud to have his name and school listed.
Congrats to everyone graduation!!! I’m glad I haven’t heard any horror stories about kids doing something stupid that last week and not getting to walk.
As for announcing what every students is doing at graduation. There simply isn’t time. We have ~650 kids in the class and 2 hours for graduation. (The venue is used by another school quickly after.) Plus while I want to know, I honestly think that is a bit personal for a graduation ceremony.
I haven’t posted here all week. Senior awards was a bit of a bust. My son only award was his commended NM which we have known about since last fall. He would have been happier giving it a miss. Classes are DONE as of yesterday. My kid has a grin ear to ear, he’s so happy all the stress is over. Plus he has secured the all important ride to his job for the summer. I guess a week away isn’t that last minute.
Stupid me… is just a bit obsessed about making sure that UCSC has no reason to rescind. Since GPA is done on the honors system and the ONLY transcript they get will be in a few weeks. I’m a being a tab bit over obsessive about making sure they have no reason to rescind. They will rescind if you lied about any of the classes or if you drop any of the classes you said you were taking. It’s very strict.
Then I start to worry what “within a grade point” mean, is it what I think it is… and you can from a 4.2 down to a 3.2 and still be OK? I obsessively checked last night and my son’s UC GPA for senior year will be EXACTLY the same as it was for junior year. I guess I don’t have to worry.
Now that graduation is almost upon us, Techson17 and I spent some time on the college website looking at classes. Most of his classes are prescribed by his major but he is supposed to take an honors seminar and an elective. We looked at the website and were discussing what he would be interested in. The only honors seminar he refused to try is the math one. He has dyscalculia and didn’t go past geometry. Well, guess what - they preregistered him for the math seminar! and for psych 101, which he has the AP credits for. In all fairness, they don’t have his ap scores yet because I am waiting for this year’s before I send them up. They are due to be released when we are orientation. It’s always something.
Techson17 is going to send an email to the program director explaining his math LD and his lack of the prerequisite for alg 2/trig and hope that they can change the assignment. I am just concerned that they will put him out of the honors program and he got a scholarship for it and is supposed to live in honors housing.
It doesn’t get any easier. At least in hS, when they messed up his schedule, I called the GC - have him on speed dial!
