Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@eandesmom Yes, the earlier the better. Since D17 hasn’t actually submitted ANYTHING yet [Edited to say that her scores and all the stuff from the HS is in, she just hasn’t actually submitted any apps yet], I can pretty much guarantee that she won’t be among the November 10th group.

@kt1969 same scenario here. Scores sent, transcript sent (but can’t check to see if received) and all common app items uploaded (LOR, GC) but he is still 38 words over the limit on his essay.

Fingers crossed he has some review time with his English teacher today.

12/10 I am sure.

@enndesmom Yes there is probably a way for the GC to fix the physics problem now. She is new and probably doesn’t realize, that she could just add health in 7th period. DS already did talk with her about it. I’m not sure if I’m going to push or what…

The good news is at midnight last night S17 comes in with his common app essay and asks my husband to copy-edit his essay. (My husband is always up at this time.) My husband said it read like a college essay, but was well written. But did need some minor changes. But the apps still aren’t in… and today’s the day day marching band starts going crazy…

Talking about grades (on the other board) S17 is doing well on all but Physics. Seems he need to take the extra-time he is allotted on Physics test but he’s really reluctant. Did badly on a test because he ran out of time. He also may need to go talk with the teacher about doing every other problem in the homework. It’s taking him a really long time to finish and I’m not sure that’s actually productive. His 504 does allow for this types of thing he just have to work it out with the teacher.

Remember that ED/EA statistics also include athletes and other preferred admissions (scholarship programs, legacies) and their stats might not be as high as others in the pool. Those without hooks in the EA pool might actually have much higher stats.

I think UVM does have a lot of merit money, but the OOS tuition is pretty high. Even with $15k in merit, you are still looking at $25k in tuition and $12k for room and board.

Hi, I am a lurker with HS 2018 and 2019 who fall into this GPA. UVM is on my DS 2018 list, so I love all the talk about it.
Just curious why I am not reading about Ole Miss on this thread? My understanding is a 3.0 GPA gets scholarships that stack. Different levels based upon SAT/ACT and major, but lots of scholarships given. They also have an OOS cost that is relatively low as compared to other state universities.

Hi @Longhaul! Can’t speak for anyone else, but my D isn’t interested in big state schools [UVM is by far the biggest school on her list] and also not interested in going to school in the south. We are a fairly small group so probably not representative of the larger group.

@Longhaul Ole Miss is about 3,000 miles east of the Rockies. So not on my S17’s radar. Plus it’s the south… I might have gotten him interested in rural NY, MA, or Vermont. But not in the south.

Plus we aren’t chasing scholarships.

Welcome @Longhaul I can’t speak for anyone else either but S17 is not interested in a big state school, nor anything remotely in the south (or even Midwest). WWU is his largest school at 15k, UVM at 12K and the rest are 1/2 to 1/4 the size lol.

Ohio University (large) and University of Wyoming (15K in size) are also often good deals for OOS respectively with lower stats. Temple used to be but that seems to have changed and they are deliberately vague now. I believe there are definitely some folks on the main 2017 thread looking at Ole Miss. As @kt1969 mentioned this is a smaller group and for whatever reason seems to be looking at schools on the coasts, mid atlantic and upper midwest. We’ve a shocking lack of southern presence now that I think about it!

Speaking of grades we have 3 classes that are issues though there has been movement upwards in 2 out of 3 and the 3rd I am really not worried about (significant history with the teacher and their grading practices/timeline lol). I don’t expect any of the EA schools to want quarter grades but do really hope the 2 classes in question are “fixed” by then. I’m not overly concerned for the semester, it starts out this way every year and ends up ok.

In the case of my daughter (whose GPA is technically too high for this thread), her ACT score would disqualify her from all of the scholarships I see on Ole Miss’s website.

We would not make the ACT threshold as well as they do not superscore. And even if they did, $1,500 would be a drop in the bucket. They are definitely paying for test scores over GPA.

Has anyone else run into straight up incompetence with guidance counselors? We have spent the better part of a month going around with D17’s guidance counselor; it took three weeks to get her to send transcripts even though letters of recommendation were loaded. Then another couple of days because (she said) “The Common App website is down.”

We finally got confirmation from Creighton that they received D17’s transcripts and letters and are reviewing her application. We should hear back from Creighton and Drake in early November. Still waiting on Colorado State and U of Colorado.

So far, U of Nebraska has come through with the best scholarship package (also, their admissions office is SUPER responsive, and they’ve overwhelmed us with free goodies.) Iowa State and Arizona State were pretty tight-fisted with scholarships. U of Arizona gave D17 a good package, but they’re still just a little out of reach. We’ll have to find some additional aid to even consider them. Boise State has accepted her, but no scholarships yet.

Once we hear from the last four schools, we’ll be ready to make a decision, I think…hope…!

Wow, @coloradomom2015–I’m jealous! My D has yet to hit submit on her first application! Sorry about the GC. That’s one thing that’s definitely gone well for us, despite issues with Naviance and with the online grades system (still not up and won’t be until 1st quarter grades are already in). Just wish the teacher recommenders would pick up the baton!

Ole Miss - pretty much the same for my D as the majority of the others on this thread–not considering the south at all (@eandesmom, the south is my D’s Ohio, lol). She’s looking at schools in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, and Midwest (had some schools on the west coast and in Rockies, but these dropped off).

@coloradomom2015 wow, you have a ton of acceptances already and all your apps in? Impressive!!!

Our GC is as green as they come this year, completely clueless. But, as best I can tell, actually on top of things although it has taken a bit of nagging, asking questions etc. Our transcript was the last item to go, but it was held up by the transcript supplement which needed to be updated for the 2016-2017 admission cycle. They wouldn’t release transcripts without it. I finally emailed the CC about it as the old one is on the website so I could see the new one. Which tells me NOTHING about where a school might interpret S falling as far as rank goes. We haven’t ranked since 2015, they have made it very clear that they do not provide deciles so all I get is a total students in the class and an average gpa. So…yeah, we know is in the upper half of the graduating class and nothing more. LOL!

I would assume she would qualify for WUE at Boise, it doesn’t look like they send those out until after 12/15 but who knows what the timing is. That makes it pretty affordable. I like that Boise has a finish in 4 program. I wish all schools did!

I’m not sure what it is about Idaho in general but S gets SO much snail mail and email from the Idaho schools its crazy.

@coloradomom2015 Impressed. We are pushing just to get the first two app in by Nov 1st. UC app can’t even be submitted till Nov. 1st.

S17’s counselor if fairly green as well. I think she doesn’t realize that not putting him officially in Physics second semester could hurt him, and to take him out of something like band instead. Once he has the online heath done, it should clear everything up. But she is double checking any advice she is giving us… so that is good.

As for transcripts our councilor has nothing to do with submitting them. It’s a large H.S. Transcripts are handled through Parchment, not through Naviance nor Common App. An administrator at the H.S. does need to “approve” the transcript before it goes out, but that got taken care of the first working day after we ‘sent’ the transcripts.

@Longhaul, welcome! Hmm, I never even noticed the lack of southern schools on this thread. It’s funny as Bama is all over the main thread. My D has also nixed any schools in the south. And she’s opposed to big state schools as well. The only ones on her list are in-state safeties.

@jmek15, when we went to UVM the colleges had booths set up and luckily engineering was not too popular. D was able to spend a good bit of time talking to a professor who happened to specialize in her field (EE renewable energy). That was a real highlight. It was nice to hear from an actual prof that she can get involved in UG research. Unfortunately the tour was not good (huge group – couldn’t hear guide), so I don’t even remember the engineering facilities.

@coloradomom2015, yes, GC trouble here as well! D made the original request Sep 9. Teachers got theirs in at a very reasonable time. D asked GC a week or so ago and was told it would be by the 24th. Asked yesterday and now it will supposedly be ready on the 2th. And she has five schools due 11/1! :!!

@snoozn oh no!!! is it the GC letter/form that is late?

@snoozn -

I have no personal stake in RPI; none of my kids has the remotest interest in computers, engineering or the like. The 2 young men I know mature, but very nice young men.

As for Clarkson - one young man partied too much. He came from a very strict background and the isolation and boredom led to partying. The other one has a lot of anxiety and the isolation got to him as well. He is actually now at Sarah Lawrence and loving it.

My only point is that the kids I know at RPI like it more than the ones who went to Clarkson. I also know a bunch of boys who went to RIT and all loved it.

@snoozn , my DS 18 very much wants Environmental Engineering with renewable energy. Any advice on schools to tour will be appreciated.

@Longhaul we looked into that for my S and found, in general, that if you want renewable you’ll need to look at electrical or mechanical or chemical engineering as the basis, not environmental.

S17 is instead considering environmental studies/science at schools that offer energy science as a minor or some renewable/sustainable courses as either concentrations or electives.

The best programs we found for his interests on the engineering side were mechanical based. Humboldt State does offer an energy resource concentration that was water focused. I think Clarkson and ESF may have some options as well.

Be careful when you see energy resource engineering as often that is fossil fuel based, not renewables.

@snoozn What’s the rule on the 11/1 dates?

I know it’s different school to school. But the dates are often when the STUDENT material has to be in. But that isn’t always the same date the teacher recs, SAT’s, and transcripts have to be submitted. It’s not always real clear on the web-sites.

I do know the reason S17’s counselor hasn’t even started on my son’s is she’s doing all the ED/EA ones first. And he doesn’t need letters for the EA app’s nor UC’s he’s working on now.
