@Kardinalschnitt I will never take central heating for granted again.
You got me remembering the days of going to sleep with a hat and gloves when I lived in the mountains in an old drafty house, and waking up in the morning to below freezing temperatures inside until the space heater warmed it up.
Is there really any hope for students like us in this range? Just passed the halfway point of my junior year and will be applying in just under 10 months.
Can a 3.3 UW 3.7 W with a 1130 SAT get me into some decent schools? I am not talking Ivys or even top 60 of course.
@Titan431 Your GPA is pretty good. I imagine you’ll try retaking the SAT again. You could also try the ACT, if you haven’t already since some students score better on one than the other. Fortunately, you have some time to work on boosting your stats.
It does seem daunting at first, but you will have some great options.
@Titan431 check out the results postings on the 2017 3.0-3.4 thread. MANY kids in your range did quite well, including my son with a 3.47UW/3.65 ish W (estimate as our HS doesn’t weight) and 25 superscored ACT who was admitted to 7/7, all with merit scholarships.
Be smart about your target list and you will be fine. Superscore can be your friend!
My son has decided to attend UW-La Crosse in the fall! I’m excited because I think it’s a great fit for him and the area is so pretty. Plus, the tuition is very reasonable compared to some of his other options. Feels good to know where he will be!
@maddog00 my DD got response from CSULB, CSUF, SFSU, I heard from other threads that SDSU, CPP also announced some acceptance, we are waiting for CalPoly SLO and SJSU.
Haven’t been here in awhile. Son has been admitted to some schools, which is a relief: U. of Mary Washington (public - small amount of merit aid), Virginia Commonwealth U (public), U of Vermont (no aid, so forget it, same price as expensive private for out of state), and Goucher (good merit aid!). So yay! He still has 6 to hear from. He doesn’t have a strong preference, so we’ll probably need to go to some admitted students days to figure it out. Not to mention the amount of aid he gets. He likes VCU and Goucher, but they are very different.
Haven’t checked in here in a while as well. It sounds like things are starting to shape up for some… congrats! We’ve been anxiously waiting for 7 more RD results (although we’re happy with our EA results as well).
While we are still pining away, we did get two acceptances over the weekend: Whitman and St Olaf. These are in S’s (rather tentative 8-| ) top five. Given how well our visit to Lawrence went, it feels like a difficult decision is looming in the horizon.
LAC results have been interesting on CC: it looks like applications are up again after the mild dip in the midwest last year. I’m guessing yields might drop since the number of applicants is supposed to be lower…?
My daughter finally withdrew from ISU and will definitely go to Laramie in August. Yay! I think she made the right choice for now. We’re treating it as she would a year abroad – get that year in then choose whether or not to remain in the US or go to Scotland/Ireland/Switzerland.
I just discovered this thread, and should have been here sooner… S has 3.4 W and is a student-athlete, we looked solely at LAC’s/D3 athletics. Was accepted 4/5 schools, all 4 with Merit, 2 with really great Merit!
@1399HdJ That’s really great to hear! This particular thread is a bit more quiet than other years, but it’s fantastic to see everyone’s results. Up and coming applicants definitely should know that this range of gpas will not hold them back!
It was a nail-biter, but all worked out. He just committed to Austin College (TX). He attends a very large public HS, and for college wants a small school environment with peers who are smart and apply themselves. That was his goal, and he went after it. There is a fit for everyone, and I hope this thread helps people understand that.
@MScarn , congratulations! I tried to get my kids to look at UW LaCrosse because I’ve heard such great things about it - and it’s close, but not too close! What is he wanting to study??
I think we’re close to reaching a decision here. DS visited WSU with Dad and decided that it wasn’t for him. I’m a bit sad about this as everyone who goes there seems to love it and he had an offer of full tuition plus $1000/off room/board. It would have been a fabulous deal, but definitely some travel expenses to figure in. He decided it was just too remote. Top choice now is U of Manitoba with UW Eau Claire as his second choice. He likes the more urban environment of Winnipeg and the fact that it’s a bit further from home than Eau Claire. There will be a small amount of merit plus fabulous tuition reciprocity that will actually (once you figure in the exchange rate) probably make this a better deal financially than WSU. It’s definitely drivable (about 7 hrs) vs WSU which was a flight or two. He wants to go back and visit once more and so we’re trying to make that happen in April. They finish much earlier than schools in the US, so we hope to fit it in before they finish for the summer.
