Parents of the HS Class of 2018 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

Daughter was accepted to Dickinson and University of Rochester yesterday. We were very surprised; URoch was a reach for her. You never really know how it’ll turn out until you try!

Our S sent his FA appeal to Ithaca over the weekend. I don’t know that the chances of success are that great (he would need about 5K more), but we didn’t expect him to be admitted to the program he applied to either. We still don’t think it’s the best fit for him, but the appeal makes it affordable we won’t stand in his way.

@taverngirl That’s awesome. I looked at Rochester for my son but it looked too hard to get into! Got the impression you had to have all As. Didn’t apply. Dickinson is a great school too.

We went to a reception for Goucher accepted students last night. President is very impressive. They make it sound good! Got merit aid but still very expensive, so not sure. Still waiting to hear from several schools - probably won’t hear until April 1. Need to visit George Mason and Christopher Newport. (We live in VA.)

Over the past year, reading through this thread has been so helpful. Has provided me confirmation that there are many college options and there is a college that is a right fit for my son. For future readers, wanted to provide the outcome of his college search. Hopefully will help a future college senior (and their parents!)

3.3 UW, 4.2 W
gpa includes a handful of Cs,
rigorous course load
33 ACT
strong extracurriculars

Accepted: SMU (merit), TCU, U of Arizona - Honors College (merit), Whitman (merit), U of San Diego (merit), CU Boulder (merit)
Waitlisted: Chapman
Rejected: USC, Boston College, George Washington

Similar to @CPHinPVE I’ve followed along over the year to gain some inspiration and knowledge. My S18 is my youngest and a very different student than my other kids.

Here’s how things have ended up for him:
3.3 UW, 3.6 W
8 AP courses, fairly rigorous classes at top socal CA hs1460 ss SAT
EC strong but mostly theatre related and community service

Accepted: BU (CGS), USD, UConn, Drexel, Penn State, U of Alabama, Seton Hall
Waitlisted: Tulane, Virginia Tech
Rejected: Boston College (legacy), Villanova

Congrats @CPHinPVE and @trueheart , those are great options for your sons. Now the hard but fun part of choosing

Thanks @CPHinPVE! He was pretty sad about the BC rejection even though he really didn’t have the stats for it. I think he was hoping to cash in on his legacy status (dad is alumni and sister currently a junior at BC) but guess that shows how little that matters if the rest of the numbers don’t quite line up. He’s feeling better about everything and leaning toward BU, we will go to their Open House next week. I’m still hoping he may choose USD (University of San Diego) and stay close to home!

@trueofheart I think you, @CPHinPVE and I should form a “got the negatory from BC” club for our S’s :)) It looks like a lesson in knowing your target schools, or perhaps knowing the relationship between one’s HS and the target school. We had a lot of applicants from our HS to Santa Clara for example, so it was harder to be high on that rank list, even with good scores.

My son is a decent student with a pretty good work/homework ethic, but not one to care about how other kids are doing academically. End of junior year GPA: 3.2. Private college prep school. 1 Honors class, 2 AP classes (yes, that’s it.) Decent EC’s: lacrosse, chorus, theatre, BBYO, summer jobs. SAT score (after prep class): 1360. (before prep class 1260. That 100 extra points really made a $$ difference.) He wants to study business, but exactly what kind, he’s not sure, so all of his applications were to the Business School “Undecided” or “Exploratory”. Our philosophy at the beginning of the application process was to cast a wide net, and see what ($$) we pulled in. It worked. He applied to 11 schools and got into 7/8 ( 8 if you count PSU’s 2+2 program, which isn’t a consideration for my son.)

All the schools he was accepted to put him in the Business School.

Acceptances: Arizona State, Barrett Honors College & Nice Scholarship; Alabama-small scholarship; U of Colorado, Boulder-small scholarship; UNLV, (never got scholarship info from UNLV); U of South Carolina – small scholarship; Temple U - small scholarship; JMU; Penn State – Accepted to 2+2 Program

VA Tech – Waitlisted
Maryland & Tulane - NO

He hasn’t made a decision yet. Final 2 in the running are Arizona State and South Carolina. He’s leaning towards ASU’s Barrett Honors Program-- almost too good to pass up, and he received a decent scholarship too. Arizona is across the country for us, but I’m a firm believer in kids having different and new experiences. (Eldest son went to university in Scotland.) He’s ready to fly the coop, too. I’m hoping he picks ASU.

Too bad this thread died. Strange that both 2017 and 2019 are way more active. I’m the sort of person who thinks, “It’s because I was involved in it.” :-))

So is everyone attending orientations and making room selections?

We aren’t attending orientation but I do get to accompany dd to school for move-in, so that is huge.

Dd decided to go random on her roommate and it has turned out that her roommate is the precise type of person we envisioned as worse-case scenario! I mean the total and complete polar opposite of dd. I am sooo freaked out. I know I shouldn’t be, that it could be a big learning experience for both, but with dd’s history of bullying I am just dying here. Please tell me others have these anxieties!

On another note, it has taken me since October to complete the FAFSA verification process. I finally received the last piece of documentation just a few days ago and was able to fax it in. As of last night, we have a very decent FA package and I am sooo relieved. I have been wondering for 9 months how this would turn out! Everything is now more than affordable and we have lots of wriggle room! Can’t wait for August!

Oh, and dd graduates tonight! Can’t wait for these past 12 years to be over once and for all. I really hope she can put it all behind her and start afresh.
