I’m trying very hard to not compare kids because they are very different , but it does occasionally slip out. What can I say, I’m human.
Good strategy, @carolinamom2boys. I guess I’m talking about the internal pressure kids feel when their older sibs go to some place like your S16 is going and/or have great scholarships, etc.
So my daughter’s doing a “mini-triathlon” today for a minimester-type course she’s in. They’ve been building them up for it over the past two weeks, and today’s the payoff, seeing what they can do. I dropped her off this morning for the final equipment check, and then they do 100 yards of swimming, 6 miles on their bikes, and a 2 mile run.
And the scary thing is, my non-athlete kid has been looking forward to this all weekend! Go figure.
I’m very lucky @EastGrad that DS19 is extremely laid back( to a fault sometimes) but he is able to identify things he excels at over his brother , like drawing. DS16 can’t draw a stick figure, but DS19 is quite good. I’m also very lucky that they are extremely close. I’m a little worried to see what next year will bring with DS16 gone.
@Dragonflygarden Woot! Woot!!! Yay DragonGirl!!!
@dfbdfb You gotta love DD expanding her horizons!! Sounds like a good group she is with!
Congratulations @Dragonflygarden !
@dfbdfb Whatever makes them happy!
@dfbdfb sounds great regarding the triathlon! I know tons of kids that aren’t into sports that end up getting hooked on biking,snowsports, skateboarding, swimming, golf etc. I think encouraging kids to learn new independent athletic endeavors is one of the best things a parent can do. Get the kids outside. Learn a new skill they can use in their life. Challenge themselves, not others on a team.
I guess this is the natural progression of our dilemma from earlier this year on tech vs. sports. D is backup varsity goalie … and the team has made the district playoffs. At the same time there’s a regional awards gala that’s a big deal with all the high schools and their musicals in kind of a high school version of the Tony’s … and her tech crew is nominated in outstanding stage crew category. The playoff finals and the awards show (televised, red carpet, long gowns, the whole works) are BOTH THE SAME NIGHT.
Would it be bad of me to hope they’re knocked out before the final game?
(But the chances of them winning it all are good - they were undefeated until losing one game last week.)
I just wish she were doing as well in school!!
So the child enjoyed her mini-triathlon yesterday (despite nearly getting lost on the bike leg), but has informed me that she is never, ever, ever going to voluntarily do anything that involves swimming laps again.
On a completely different front, I’m going to indulge in a brag here: We have a regional honor orchestra type of thing for high school students here (there is no school-district-run honor orchestra, it’s a nonprofit that does it). My daughter was in it last year, but in what can really be thought of as the JV squad—sort of a “that was brave of you to audition, so here’s a consolation prize”. Well, she just got word that she made it into the top group for next year! I really wasn’t completely surprised, given that she’d worked her way up from fourth chair oboe (of four) to second chair in the lower group over the course of last season, but she was convinced she was going to be in the lower division for another year before breaking through.
Congrats to your daughter @dfbdfb
Congrats @dfbdfb
@dfbdfb congrats to your D! That is such a great feeling!!!
Congrats to your oboist, @dfbdfb, on her orchestral advancement and her triathlon! Well-rounded kid!
I hate those conflicts, @gatormama! Hope it works out.
We’re having a minor melt down tonight trying to prepare and study for his hardest exam in English that he has tomorrow while completing his other homework and complete a ridiculous project that she has assigned and continues to pile on. I feel so bad for him. He’s struggling . It’s been a rough few weeks.
@Gatormama that is so tough when everything is at the same time but how fabulous the team has done so well.
Tech is killing S17 at the moment but then again…I think so is being 16 and all that goes with Junior year. That she can manage both is a credit but I feel your pain when it is possibly at the expense of grades.
@carolinamom2boys meltdowns, and the end of the year are rough! I hope I can survive the next 5 weeks.
@eandesmom We have less than 3 weeks, almost 2.
@carolinamom2boys I am jealous. June 24th here.
We start back mid August @eandesmom
We have classes until mid June and then the high schoolers only have to go the next couple of weeks when they have exams. My D only has one exam that won’t be in class.
A brag for us: she won a school award. We won’t know what award until the first week in June. We think less than 10 freshman win awards (over 300 freshman in her school), so it’s pretty cool. She doesn’t have leadership positions and doesn’t play sports, so we think it’s likely an academic award. It’s been fun trying to guess which, lol.
She’s definitely looking forward to the end of the year. She needs the break from her nemesis of a class, Spanish. I’m hoping she can take a lifeguarding class over the summer, it’s something she’s wanted to do since she was little and she is finally old enough (and will have the time).
@dfbdfb that’s great about the music!
@Gatormama, I wonder if this will be an on going theme through high school? It reminds me a little of High School Musical and Troy being torn between basketball and drama. (Yes, I watched it about a billion times when my kids were younger… We also own the DVDs of all 3 of those movies)
well there is that @carolinamom2boys, we don’t start till after labor day. The real issue I have with our schedule is that we have a full week for Presidents week… I’d vastly prefer that was a long weekend and they got out a week earlier.
@mom2twogirls that’s wonderful!
