Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

So Tuesday was the emergency need for a trifold. Yesterday I find out that he has lost his expensive graphing calculator. It’s been missing a week or so, so he has algebra 2 homework that hasn’t been done. I made him clean up all his areas looking for it but he didn’t find it. Then we talked through every class and he assured me he had no more homework due tomorrow or big projects coming up.

This morning when I came downstairs I was greeted by, “Mom, we have no more lined paper in the house and I need some immediately.” Not only did he need it for school today but also he suddenly remembered homework due today. We cut some out of an half used spiral notebook.

I want to go to Disney. Three more weeks till summer break.

All my family except myself need substantial bribe to go to Disney. We still have partially used 10-day Disney tickets :((
Actually DH never went to Disney with kids. Only I took the kids to WDW and Disneyland multiple times before they turned 10 or so. I also took them to Legoland about 10 times by myself.
They were happy to go to Universal, Harry Potter world. So I guess Universal studios will work as a family vacation.

I think OfficeMax would do well if they go 24-hours or Kinkos should start selling trifolds, lined & graphing paper…
Actually, our grocery chain which is open 24-hrs has all school stationery stuff.

S19 had lost a graphing calculator so I bought another one. His old one turned up in a few weeks (someone had taken it, I guess, to annoy him) so we have a spare. [-(

@mom23travelers Hopefully this little story will make you feel that you’re in good company. My son’s English teacher gave them this horrendous, multi step project which took them 1 1/2 months to complete . He worked diligently during the week and on weekends to get it done so that he could bring up his grade because of a low test grade on his Shakespeare test. I checked it, it was done and ready to be turned in. ( each section had a certain deadline and was weighted differently) The day that it was due, they had a sub because the teacher was in the hospital. In his " infinite wisdom" he was worried that it would get lost , and didn’t put it in the basket. He placed it in the next morning. Big fat 0. No late work. Hopefully he’s learned his lesson. :((

@mom23travelers you must be hanging out at my house!

Office max is open pretty late, you can order and buy online and then go pick up. Or if out of town on a business trip have your parents do it (so you can look even more lame to them lol).

And despite the app, online, S19 still has ELEVEN missing assignments in french.

@carolinamom2boys that is so something both of my kids would do. Missing/late/turning anything in…all bets are off if it is a sub. And it rarely seems to get “fixed” when the regular teacher is back.

@Gatormama I can promise you one C- does not equal community college. We have one successful college graduate who graduated on time from a nice locally regarded but not on CC radar LAC who managed to get in with a 3.0 and zero AP or honors classes. There are plenty of options for kids. I certainly hope S19 isn’t in that boat for his sake but for the B+ kid, it is less a matter of finding great schools they can get into (S17 in this case) than it is for finding ones that may be a a great school and be at the price you want to pay. Do not despair, a LOT can change in 4 years time.

@homerdog we debated having S19 take the Bio SAT test. We elected not to (not at all common at our HS) after hearing another friend attempted it 2 years ago in the same scenario. Freshman Honors Bio kid, this one arguably a better student (aka more responsible with turning stuff in on time) although he did not self study at all for the test. He did not do well at all on the subject test. I tossed it back at S19 to take a practice test and see what he thought. He has done nothing about it. I am frankly more concerned with the French grade at this point as if the overall GPA doesn’t come up, he will not be applying to schools that need subject tests!

By in large it seems to be more of an east coast thing, very very few west coast schools want or need them.

I agree on family vacations. I am quite sad not to have one this summer but my E’s had a large/long school trip to Ireland in March that wiped out any family trip budget for the summer. It was worth it but it is still sad!

@payitforward, @eandesmom I know DS will find kids he knows at the Bio SAT test! I think kids don’t talk to each other about it because they’re embarrassed that their silly moms are making them take it. It is correct that he probably will not “need” it for applications. He’s a good test taker. If he could get over a 700, we would report it on any application just for good merit and more info. Looks like you can get 15 wrong out of the 80 and still get a 700. Our younger daughter is bright but not the best standardized test taker. We won’t have her take SAT subject tests at all. Just don’t tell my son that. I’m sure he’s assumes that she will be doing all of this as well. LOL.

His Bio H class was a little light on some of the subjects (ecology) and some of the molecular stuff was covered way back in the early fall last year. He’s just worked on it with a Barron’s book a little bit each morning this week - doing practice tests and checking answers, etc. At the very least, it’s less time on his phone!

@eandesmom Unfortunately , nothing to fix. This English teacher has a policy of not accepting any late assignments.

D19 just took her third (and final for this year) standard state test; she scored pass advanced on all three of them.

Can’t wait for school to be out – three weeks to go!

@carolinamom2boys exactly. Half the time there is nothing to fix is because it is unfixable and the sub aspect was irrelevant even if the kid deemed it a factor. No fun.

Freshman year is DONE!!! All done, grades locked in, all A’s… (Thank you to the heavens above…really didn’t think she’d pull it off) :-h :)) :-bd I’m exploring the emojis… trying to come up with an end of year party symbol!!

We never go on vacation, except this year! 2 weeks in France, Italy and Switzerland. We are attending the European Championship and following DH’s team around. Kiddo has only been to England once, when she was about 6/7. Can’t wait for her to see the Cote D’Azur!!!

I changed my mind. I no longer want to go to Disney. I want to join @2019hope in Europe.

@mom23travelers Awesome!!! You’re going to have to hang out with “soccer hooligans” but it could be fun!!!

@2019hope Hooray for a strong finish <:-P <:-P <:-P

I want to join too, any room in the luggage?

@2019hope, have a terrific time. We did that sort of trip last summer (in conjunction with one of D16’s activities): Copenhagen and Norway with the group, then Italy, Switzerland, and France on our own. We were gone for about five weeks. Makes this summer seem very tepid in comparison. We’ll be saving our pennies for another trip in the future because it was definitely worth it.

@carolinamom2boys, arrggghh!! That teacher! So glad you are done with him. What a terrible experience all around.

congrats @2019hope all A’s as a freshman is a great start. I think my son is going to fall just short with a B+ in Honors Bio. I guess it’s a B@#ch of a class with a really tough teacher/grader.

I would love him to pull it up to an A- but it might be mathematically impossible. Oh well, rest of grades are good.

I like seeing people are getting some nice trips in this summer. Have fun.

I want to go on @2019hope’s too!!! Except maybe without the kids. LOL! Kind of funny actually, we will use our Disney “points” to yes, go to Disney next year but also to tack on a week in Mexico (S17’s choice), Disney on one side of the trip and Universal on the other. So, no summer trip this year but next years will be 2 full weeks. I am lucky in that all of the family tolerates my Disney “addiction” H may say he is over it and yet he will be the first to tack on some park days on an unrelated trip or then ask to add additional park days to a ticket once we are there. Cracks me up. I do go without the kids and H though, on girls/race trips.

I am playing the mom card though for grad trips, I want one last Disney trip as part of it while they are still “kids”. I can only hope that S17 wants to go on S19’s trip!

For my part, I’m going to Berlin with the 11-year-old (who’s in a German immersion school) next week—a couple days are for work, but the rest is to hang out and get to speak lots of German again. I’ll wave as I fly through Paris, @2019hope!

No vacations for us this year. Boo. We ended last summer’s vacation with d19 getting pneumonia, which was determined after an expensive ER visit. That put a dent in our discretionary spending budget. Add upcoming dental work (braces) for the younger d and we need to save up until next summer.

Great start @2019hope ! The summer Europe trip sounds good too!

@carolinamom2boys, we had went through a very similar situation for Math. Most kids in the class lost their work and grades.

@mom2twogirls Ouch! I hope she didn’t have lasting effects!!

@carolinamom2boys You must be so thrilled to get this year over with…that is such B.S.
