Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

Sounds like a useless orientation. D19’s orientation is next Tuesday. Allegedly, she’ll get her schedule that day, so she can actually meet her teachers. We’ll see.

DS19 received his schedule in the mail. They have a meet the teacher night for parents several weeks after school starts .

That’s strange and honestly a waste of time-@LexieAnn Freshman Orientation at my former high school is the Friday before Labor Day with school starting the day after Labor Day. The biggest point of orientation is getting your schedule and going through one of the “days” of the schedule to get a feel for it and figure out where things are. While kids do that, there are upperclassmen and other teachers pointing them in the right direction while parents listen to presentations.

@readingclaygirl LexieAnn’s son is a sophomore not a Freshman

My mistake @carolinamom2boys @LexieAnn I guess I thought orientation=new school=freshman. I’ve never heard of 10th + graders having orientation unless it was a new school

Registration was today and I’m beat! S19 registered early this morning (no surprises w/his schedule) and then we volunteered to help with freshman registration afterward. S19 just wanted to scope out the new blood. :>

@carolinamom2boys and @readingclaygirl, you’re both right. My boy is a sophomore, but our high school is 10-12. I’ve been through this 3x already with my girl, I just always think it will be better the next year. I scratch my head because they register for classes in April. I’m sure there must be some logic behind it…I just can’t figure out what it is.

My daughter registered back in January IIRC. She won’t get her schedule until the very end of August.

At our school, the kids pick the classes in February, and get the schedules a week before school starts.

We have Back to School night a few weeks afterward, but this year we have it one week after the school starts.

They set up so that the parents follow kids schedule for 7 periods. We get to go to kids’ classrooms for 10 minute presentation and Q/A. Then there is a 5-min passing period when all parents rush along the hallway locating the classrooms. We get to meet all 7 teachers. I like the efficiency and effectiveness of this set up. However, after 100 minutes of classes and 20 minute principal introduction before that, I find the evening quite exhausting.

Then, I saw on FB a mom posted, “Some things never change. I skipped all the classes/meeting teachers and chatted in the hallway for two hours on Back to School night.”
I agreed — Things never change. I missed zero classes (12 years of perfect attendance.) I would be a valedictorian even as a mom. :))

@payn4ward that’s how our school does it as well.

Ours does back to school like that for middle and high school. I like it. I have to admit to skipping the last period a couple of times for middle school (not core classes and I wanted to beat traffic) and last year leaving the high school one and running to my car to beat the traffic…wanting to beat traffic was just like me in high school too, lol.

Good to see some familiar names here from Class of 2016. I’ll be prowling and posting here as my younger S starts his sophomore year. Completely different kid, interests and likely list of schools.

HS starts for us right after Labor Day though for him it’s really started already with Marching Band. Camp starts next week for that.

There’s quite a few of us @dbjs70 . My DS19 is a different kid too. Smart in his own right, but has to work at it.

Dropped my S off to high school! He asked last night if he could go today to get his permit. LOL

DS19 heads back to school today. I feel totally unprepared as I’ve spent the past month getting ready for my oldest son to leave for college this Sunday. It felt so strange to write just one check for lunch. It will be nice to only fill out school paperwork for one though. :frowning:

2 more started back?! Summer sure went quickly. We still have a few more weeks of relaxation to enjoy here.

School here starts the day after labor day. The kids won’t get their schedules until they arrive at school the first day. Since my daughter is out of district and they kicked her records back to her districted school then we transferred her back to the out of district school, I expect her schedule to be a hot mess. It will probably take up to 2 weeks for them to fix it. Also her counselor is new to high school (last year was her 1st year) and isn’t very flexible with class requests. I’m going to see if we can switch to the counselor my son had (c/o 16). He was great.

School started yesterday! Pre-Calc H teacher freaked the kids out and jumped right into chapter one. Started drawing parabolas on the board and working super quickly. Ugh! S19 liked his AP comp sci and English H teachers in particular and found kids to sit with at lunch. Overall, a good day!

S19 started band camp yesterday, the official beginning of the end of summer at our house. Summer homework is finished. D15 heads back to college on Friday, D16 heads off to college a week from Saturday. I feel so not ready for any of it.

S still has a couple weeks before school starts. He has one book to read and has not started it yet. He assures me that none of his friends have started either. Not sure if this is true or not, but I think it is time for him to get going.
