@3scoutsmom, thank you for clarifying this. Our school districts accepts their own school districts online classes starting the summer before 9th grade and counts it as 9th grade. So lots of “high stats” kids take their PE online during the summers. This counts towards their GPA and transcript. Only classes through LISD online classes count.
Since we homeschool my kids are considered homeschooled until the first day of classes (if they are accepted) and school rules don’t apply to them until until then. They aren’t allowed to do their PE credit until they are officially enrolled. The school has all kinds of crazy rules about the PE credit, can’t be done in summer, can’t be done before 1st day of 9th grade even if done by an accredited on-line school… but if you do PE during the school year off campus it counts for the PE requirement but doesn’t factor into GPA. Our school also requires every student to take 4 non-weighted class 3 of which must before 12th grade.
^^^^ well I know PE in unweighted and counts to GPA/transcript and required for all kids. So those that want to stack up there schedule with all weighted classes, choose to do PE in the summer.
Does anyone have a suggestion of a resource (book or online) in the area of Geography? My D20 is horrible in this area, and I’d like her to work on it over the summer. I thought some of you homeschoolers might have a good idea…thanks. Probably start with the US and then move on…
This is a great site and it’s free! http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/Geography.htm
@LKNomad, sorry, wasn’t checking in for a few days. Yes, I’m in CA but every school district here has their rules. I found out the neighboring school district has “Life Skills” as a separate class that can be actually opted out of. In our school district, they merged it with “World Studies” in a way that there is no way to opt out of it or take it separately - all freshmen have to take it
@typiCAmom interesting. It was not required for my S16 and S20 is with a public homeschool charter and there is no sign of it on their graduation requirements.
We also live in CA (No.) and our school district also has a Health graduation requirement. D21 will try for a private HS and they also have this requirement. Yay
I found that both Health and PE classes were very good for my older son (required in our district), and his admission season went ok.
I’m glad they were required because then everyone had to use those blocks “unweighted”.
@LKnomad, I have a feeling there may be a way around it in our school district, and if I dig hard enough and push for it, I could possibly get it dismissed. However, I would probably be considered a “black hawk helicopter mom” by the guidance office and school district, and it may backfire on my daughter or on any of my future requests. Besides, I am not sure what D could take instead freshman year - seems like her options are pretty limited. She cam’t take chemistry until she takes biology, I see no point for her to repeat Geometry if it may screw her GPA, the only choice is an elective - i.e. Art, but she can probably skip it and go straight to Art AP in a couple of years. I am waiting to see though how my daughter’s month-long Spanish immersion goes, the school promised to get her tested in the beginning of the year and possibly put her straight into Spanish III. That may free up a spot for another elective she’s interested in.
A quick question to everyone - if my daughter ends up taking only two years of foreign language - Spanish III and Spanish AP, and then takes an AP Russian test (hopefully, it would be finalized/available within the next) to prove her proficiency in that, do you think it would satisfy top 30 colleges? Thanks!
@typiCAmom yes I think that language plan will work. My son did only Latin 3 and AP, along with a couple of years of Mandarin, and it was fine.
@fretfulmother, thanks. I worry that my daughter won’t be taking any Russian classes per se - right now they are simply not being offered at her city college, but I guess there must be some online courses somewhere - we may need to get creative.
We got bad news yesterday, the school where dd16 just graduated from and where ds18 attends will not be taking ANY class of 2020 out of district transfers! I just don’t know what we are going to do! I’m trying to get confirmation as to if this includes employee transfers as well. They have some jobs posted that I might be qualified for. Also spent the morning the morning looking at rental apartment in the district and there’s not much available, a two bedroom anywhere in the district is $1500-$1600 a month and that doesn’t include any utilities! Oh and the crazy thing is that they only guarantee the mandatory fees that aren’t included in the rent like $30 a month for trash pick up outside your door. If it’s mandatory why not just include it in the rent! Also looked at purchasing a condo there and found only three under $400K. I’m running out of options and just want to cry!
I am sorry to hear this as I certainly thought S20 would be accepted especially since his 2 siblings are great stat kids at that school. I am rooting something works out and he gets to go. I sure hope the employee thing is allowed.
@typiCAmom My dd17 has been taking Russian online for 3 yrs. She has won regional and international awards. She has passed the Russian equivalent of th TOEFL. So, online works.
@scoutsmom3 sorry to hear that. Is homeschooling for high school an option? (You could hire a lot of expert tutors for that amt of $$.)
@Mom2aphysicsgeek, would you mind sharing what is the Russian equivalent of TOEFL and which competitions did your daughter participate in? My daughter was born in USA, but we speak Russian at home, and her Russian is pretty good - she reads, speaks without an accent, can write (though her grammar and spelling are not as up to par). Thanks!
The ACTR offers an Olympiada of Spoken Russian and categorizes students into heritage and non-heritage speakers. There is also a National Russian Essay contest. http://www.actr.org
The TORFL is the equivalent test. http://english.spbu.ru/our-tests/torfl Testing at a B1 level is what is required to enroll in universities in Russia.
My dd’s tutor is Russian. She is excellent. The majority of her students are heritage speakers. (My Dd is a non-heritage speaker, but her Russian is excellent due to her teacher’s excellent teaching abilities. When she competed recently, one of the judges was judging her as a heritage speaker until she realized that one of dd’s topics was only for non-heritage speakers.) If you would like her contact info, PM me and I will share it.
Ok I did cry today but they were tears of pure joy! I was irritated that the school would not respond to my email about my plan “B” questions. If a got a job with the district, could he attend? If he took credit by exam could he enter as a 10th grader?..
Thankfully the woman in charge was very nice and listened to the options that I had laid out including moving to rental apartment in district and that DS20 not attending was not an option and that I could not have kids in two different high schools almost an hour apart. Then a lightbulb went off and she said but I thought your daughter just graduated? and I said yes but my other son was accept to continue on next year in 11th grade. She said Oh, your 11th grader is not showing up in the computer. At this point I start to panic thinking that they aren’t letting him back either, and then I notice that she is spelling our last name wrong! To be fair is a difficult name to spell with far too many vowels. After she typed in the name correctly and DS18 popped on the screen she said, not matter how full we are we do not split up families!
I started crying and hugged her! I’m not a demonstrative person so hugging someone is very out of character for me. I was just some thankful, happy relieved! She has already sent the official email for registration!
Great news @3scoutsmom. I just steamed up over here a bit! :))
So happy for you @3scoutsmom !! This fall will be my first experience with 2 school calendars to juggle. It will be hard enough with 1 college and 1 HS. I cannot imagine juggling 2 HS calendars. I am a bit sad that only parts Christmas and summer breaks will ever align again.
