@Barefooter thank you. My D has been managing her CB account/report on her own, and I personally haven’t looked at it. I did look at the generic CB tables online, but I think I may have been looking in the wrong spot.
@hgtvaddict
FWIW, our SAT is done a little more than one month before PSAT, and DS’ SAT is 80 points above his PSAT, considering SAT is 1600, 80 points higher than PSAT, it makes sense.
@Waiting2exhale I’m with you. DS is 99th %-ile but in a high score cutoff state so probably no semi-finalist. Not sure it’ll matter for his future aspirations, but would’ve been nice to include the designation on his resume. Wonder if ad-comms consider PSAT at all at non-NMF schools. Kids are all talking about it at his school.
@SoccaMomma I don’t think PSAT scores are reported to colleges, in general. I guess a student could put it in the additional information section of their application, but I don’t think that’s common. Best thing to do is use the psat for what it is, identify areas of weakness and prepare to ace the sat. 99%-ile is a good indicator that your S will do well on the sat.
@momzilla2D there is often a section on the application for awards and honors. Kids will list things like AP Scholar, National Merit, Gold Award in Girl Scouts, etc.
@lkg4answers Bit do kids typically list their psat scores there if they scored well, but didn’t make NMSF or commended level?
@momzilla2D no, I don’t believe anyone would list a PSAT score by number. They would just list the award.
@makemesmart Similar experience. SAT was done a bit more than a month before PSAT and SAT was 90 points higher than PSAT. DS said a ubnch of his friends experienced the same.
@makemesmart @carpoolingma Here as well … 90 points higher on the October SAT than on the PSAT. (On the flip side, several years ago my oldest went down about 200 points from what we expected between the PSAT and the first SAT. This was back when the SAT was out of 2400, so that probably is more like a drop of 130 now. She didn’t have any prep classes before either of those tests.)
I think if you’re on the top end, the particular test and how it’s equated can have more of a swing in the scores than anything they learned between 10th and 11th. My daughter dropped about 30+ points on the SAT in October in 11th grade versus her 10th grade PSAT (she took the PSAT/NMSQ not PSAT 10 that year). It was an easy test with a harsh curve, she actually answered more questions correctly. The PSAT for 11th taking the same week as the SAT was also lower than 10th grade PSAT, but barely and unfortunately in EGWR which exacerbates the selection index drop. She went from just making it to probably just missing it in our high cutoff state (assuming it doesn’t drop). Unfortunately she didn’t prep in 10th and assumed like many on this thread that there’d be a natural bump between 10th and 11th - it didn’t happen. Oh well, silver lining is she killed the ACT the following week and is done with testing.
@carpoolingma @washugrad
DS’ school got snowed out for the past couple of days so no one even remembered to talk about PSAT scores. Oh well, I guess that is a good thing. Lol. He would have made to the traditional cutoff of 222 IF math was counted twice. :))
@Darcy123 I believe PSAT 10 is the same as the PSAT 11 for all students. It is not a NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) until 11th grade.
Thanks for clarifying @lkg4answers - In our school you have to sign up to take the PSAT 11/NMSQT on a space available basis in 10th grade - I wasn’t sure if the test was the same as those offered in the spring to all 10th graders. Unfortunately for her, it’s not qualifying in 10th.
Now that PSAT is behind us. What are your DC’s plans for the winter break? I am hoping DS will invest time to fill out some summer program applications. But I am sure his priority is the nintendo game.
Winter break - we are going to visit relatives out of town for a few days, and also going skiing for a few days. Add on top of that catching up on the online AP Comp Sci class and hopefully there isn’t much other hw as well. Plus nintendo and YouTube, to be sure.
My daughter is applying to be on a back country crew with the Student Conservation Association. She wants to live in the woods and build trails for 4 weeks. She will work on that app over break.
My daughter will try to get some much needed rest and “chill” time but will also probably try to do a little work ahead on some of her AP classes and get some extra tennis lessons too.
Are your finals before or after break? Ours are after break.
Finals before break thank goodness! I think sleeping in is my daughter’s priority over break.
Finals before break here too. So glad for that!
