Finals are before break here.
S will be doing two-a-day swim practices over winter break.
S scored 90 points higher on the Oct 10 PSAT than the Oct 6 SAT—opposite of the trend it seems. He will hopefully get Commended with his 212.
@janiemiranda My DS probably will try to get a couple of more tennis sessions during break also. Coach called last night to check on him and told him to reach out to the team and motivate everyone to play more.
We have mid term at end of second marking period which is end of January.
Finals are next week here (except for one that was this morning already). School started in the middle of August to get half of the year over before winter break.
DS has three exams next Monday and Tuesday then his break starts Tuesday at 12:30pm!
He needs to do his on-line driving school over the break and we need to start looking for a car for him.
DS plans to do at least one swim practice with his school’s swim team in addition to his club’s practices. He told his piano teacher tonight that he plans to practice piano for two-hr a day (I wonder whether this will be in a perpetual “planning” stage!)
We have started a project – (re-)watching movie classics as a family. And hopefully we could watch four or five of them over the break.
Finals before break, thankfully. DS will get his wisdom teeth removed and then he will have some much deserved relax and chill time.
Finals are after break here. D scored a 210 on the PSAT and was very disappointed. She has a big project due before winter break starts then she’s going to Disneyland. Over the break she’ll finally have time to catch up with friends and her sleep.
D is taking her online Chinese final right now. Over break she expects some homework and a history paper to work on. I will be a Grinch and have her begin studying for the ACT (a lot of work to be done there). Other than that, mostly catching up on much-needed sleep.
My two oldest come home from college on Sunday and we’ve been waiting to decorate until they get back. DS20 has finnals next week. The next Saturday we all have eye appointments, DD will play harp at church on Christmas Eve, I’ve been informed that there will likely be a co-ed over night video game party at our house on the 26th. We are renting a dog friendly beach house on Galveston for 5 days over New Years and we’ll just chill as a family (the older two have invited their SO’s to join us but not sure if either will make it or not). After that DD will attend a national meteorology conference in AZ before she heads back to OU. There will be much baking, pleasure reading and game playing, running with the dog on the beach and ZERO school work!!!
School is wrapping up next week. Finals Wednesday-Friday. Teachers May be going on strike Monday… 12,000 kids in the school district. All high schoolers. Monday could be interesting.
My daughter comes home from college on Saturday and my son has finals next week. On Christmas Day, we’re all flying to Austin for my brother’s wedding so I’m going minimalist with decorations and presents. DS will probably try to get ahead in as many subjects as possible over break, as Robotics starts in earnest in January and he typically spends a minimum of 30 hours a week there January-April. Not sure how that’s going to gel with his current workload, but he’s made it work the past 2 years by scaling back on sleep, chores and communicating with DH and me.
“…he’s made it work the past 2 years by scaling back on sleep, chores and communicating with DH and me.”
@Waiting2exhale - That probably sounds worse than the reality. It does make for a busy 4 months, but the reality is, he has found something that makes all of the other hoops of school worthwhile to him. It’s where he learns to take risks, tackle the most difficult problems, collaborate with peers, communicate, negotiate, try, fail, try again, fail, keep trying. He’s found his tribe and work that makes him fulfilled.
Finals are before winter break here. D has been really stressed out this semester and all she wants to do during break is relax, sleep and hang out with family and friends.
DS had finals yesterday and today but most classes are full-year so Finals aren’t until the end of the school year. Hopefully DS will relax with sibs over the break. He’s been quite stressed this year so he’ll need the chillaxin to rejuvenate. There’ll be lots of Nintendo playing I’m sure. Also preparing applications for summer internships. Eldest came home from college yesterday. So glad to have whole family together again.
Good luck to those taking Finals.
What is the most obscure college that has reached out to your child?
I will start. Maybe it is because we are in California but I had never heard of Green Mountain College until my child started receiving emails.
Good luck to all with finals, and hooray for older sibs coming home!
Nearly all of S2’s classes are year-long, so no significant finals for him. Break will be sleep, time with the older two when they visit, plenty of That Nintendo Game, a little bit of let’s-try-to-get-back-on-that-Calc-horse, and a short family trip out west to try to find some sunshine.
I don’t think we’ve seen mailings from any really obscure or amusing schools yet, but sometimes S2’s reactions to schools he’s never heard of are pretty funny.
Not an obscure school, but not sure how University of Portland got on my daughter’s radar. We’ve been getting a lot of stuff from them and strangely enough, haven’t been getting as much from colleges that she has actually contacted.
Our semester ends at the end of January but in terms of a real final, all 5 of her classes are AP classes so most teachers schedule a mock AP as a final in March or April. Usually on a Saturday so they can do a realistic simulation fo the timing.
Wow, @VickiSoCal. That’s probably hugely helpful.
S2’s school only allows 3 APs/year, and only in junior and senior years. All three of them are giving the kids timed take-homes this week and next, all of which are sections of past AP exams. Just sections, though - not the full on tests.
I’m fine with that. We’re all pretty ready for break.
At break we’ll be working on setting priorities and honoring them.
He is more than a week past finishing one question for a summer program. I wanted the application filed last weekend.
Because he does well and simply does a concerted job, though does not really exert himself, he is rather easy about e v e r y t h i n g. Right now I would like for him to pick up the pace and do a little extra where extra is due.
I told him such this morning: “Leaving you to your own devices does not exactly have you honoring that you have multiple things on your plate which you will tend to in good time.”
He nodded in reflection and assent, then responded, “Uh…about those devices…”
Yeah.
