Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

@lkg4answers That would be great if the district office got them. Thanks for the info - I will check into that.

They go into Naviance at our school so the counselors can see them if they look. I didn’t really think about it to be honest.

Our district gets them and puts them on the portal. PSAT’s are too. I would think you would want the counselors to have the scores if they are assisting you in picking colleges.

@Octagon I was able to select “school not listed” after the forced look up. I agree with you on the privacy issue. My daughter did not fill out any of their questions either. Pages after pages of questions that look like part of the registration process. I appreciate when companies are transparent about their data mining and offer to compensate for participation.

fencing mom - i get you not really wanting the school to know or be involved with her scores. I will say though, that if she does well, you might want to find out how to send the scores to the school. You never know if there will be certain recognitions, honors, or chosen-opportunities that she might qualify for; and she might not like being left out if the school doesn’t know.

@Darcy123 Ok - that makes sense to have them in Naviance.

@Nicki20 The guidance counselor made pretty clear that she would not be recommending specific colleges. It perhaps helps them give general advice though.

@fencingmom Wow you got past the system! Thanks for the tip. I agree that people should know how data is being used and ACT is sure vague about it and I think deliberately so. It should have been easier to opt out. My son also didn’t fill out the other questions.

On another note - just paid for six AP tests - AP chemistry, AP physics Mechanics, AP physics E and M, AP US History, AP Calc BC and AP Computer Science - gulp!

@octagon We had to pay for our AP’s before the Christmas break!

@momcatof4 Wow that is early! No money left for holiday presents! By the way all, next year the college board is piloting fall registration for everyone. It seems early to decide on AP tests. Payments still reportedly can be made in the spring.

@lauriejgs @bigmacbeth thanks for the feedback. If we have the time, I’d like to add Brandeis to our Spring Break tour. I watched a YouTube aerial tour and it looked beautiful.

Although I am sorry for any confusion about it being a possible safety. So to be clearer, I was expressing 2 different thoughts: 1 I’m interested in learning more about Brandeis and 2 DS is dropping safeties off his list so I’d like to add more. He has only 1 now so may end up staying that way.

This year was bad - 4 AP tests and one IB with D20 and S21. Next year will be a nightmare with 5 IB and 6 AP - and that’s assuming we don’t need to throw in a few extra AP tests if my daughter’s potential future college is more generous with AP instead of IB.

@Octagon Yeah, I’d would have liked to have had a choice as to when I pay. It was definitely a chunk out of Christmas budget!

I was supposed to pay for AP tests last fall (only 3 for D20)
just looked last night and found out I’d forgotten. Extra $30. I think it’ll be 2 for next year. She’s pretty much put herself in good position for all colleges on her list at this point. Next year she will have a fairly light schedule so she can concentrate on non-academics (and college apps).

@SoccaMomma That’s what I figured
and it is a beautiful campus. It was the first school on my D17’s list
although it didn’t make the cut.

<:-P Finally done with all the discussions around course requests for next year! Schedule requested; advisor, college counselor, and parents have all signed off. I’m so happy that we can put this aside for now (until or unless we learn that some combinations can’t work and we have to have another round).

Good luck everyone on SAT/ACT prep/tests! D20 is starting prep tomorrow just to get her to 1240 (guaranteed according to her prep class). We told her if she gets to 1300 she can have a kitten  - she will be fostering cats as a summer activity (lucky us LOL).

Anyway wanted to check in to say that I am pretty impressed with College of Charleston so far in their marketing - we’re going to accepted students day for S19 and they’ve been calling and emailing to let S know they want to meet him and talk about stuff. Getting a tshirt at accepted students day. The math/science department is having their own lunch and going on tour together after and invited him. S19 looking into taking German or Russian language as a second major or minor and that department reached out and let him know when they would be at the fair.

I just thought it was tasteful marketing and definitely working on S19
which is good because they are an affordable OOS option. We also liked our general tour back in July. Great tour guide, nice business school, a hospital is next to one of the academic buildings (appealed to S19 for pre-med). Love Charleston area as well. Only downside from a “fit” perspective was that the athletic fields were not directly on campus, but I assume that is because it is a city-ish environment. Not a deal breaker.

I do wish my lazy bones son would have applied for honors though.

I will be paying for AP tests tomorrow. I believe that D20’s high school does SAT in April but I haven’t heard anything specific. She took it in December as her practice time but ended up getting a 1440 so I am really debating if she needs to hassle with taking it again. Of course an improved score would be great but she hasn’t done any prep at all so kind of doubtful she will be able to improve. And the score is very good for her intended college. Only thing is that school does super score so if she could even improve one area it could give up a bump for scholarships. And she got registered for next year without any tears or drama. Our school doesn’t have nearly the fancy options that I have seen some of you posting. She will be taking AP calc BC, AP physics, AP US government. Then she opted for core English. I think she will regret it, but proud of her for choosing the easier path for once as she has struggled with anxiety and stress this year and we have had lots of discussions on pushing yourself isn’t always the way to be the happiest. Hoping taking one core class won’t hurt her for getting into honors college. Anyone have thought on that? Then she will be taking jazz band for zero hour, wind ensemble band and guitar class so three music classes from the same teacher:-). Hurray for senior year!!!

I haven’t heard about paying for AP tests yet, I wonder when that happens?
Anyway, D20 is now considering colleges abroad. Anyone have any knowledge of that area? He’s thinking Scotland or Ireland, since he wants something in English. The schools seem enticingly priced compared to most USA schools!

@VickiSoCal has a student in Scotland.

I know a 2017 girl at University of Aberdeen in Scotland. She is doing well—she’s a very independent and ambitious young woman—but it was a big transition, for sure.

Yes, my D17 is at St. Andrews.

D20 is considering a few UK schools but NOT St. Andrews (she didn’t like the small town/remote location)

Oh wow @VickiSoCal ! I didn’t realize that. Can you tell me what made D17 decide to go abroad? Or is there another thread somewhere that I should check out? Thanks!
