Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

You can follow her whole story starting in junior year in the UK forum. It is a big decision that should not be taken on a whim but she is happy with it.

S20 was rejected by AI4ALL @ CMU. I am hoping he is getting a taste of next year. It is time to ditch the video games and work harder!

My D did a semester at Edinburgh and mostly loved it, for what that’s worth, but it was ten years ago.
And a semester is obviously vastly different from a full college experience.

Sorry, @whataboutcollege! But I hear you on both counts - there’s definitely a silver lining in that kind of wakeup call.

I don’t think there are any nice rec centers with climbing walls or lazy rivers at the UK colleges, so my D would never survive!

@bigmacbeth St Andrews has a climbing wall but no pool at all. No pool almost was a deal breaker.

But this is about D20. If D20 gets 5’s on AP Calc, Chemistry and Physics this summer.she will likely apply to natural sciences at Cambridge, Durham, Exeter and not.sure what other 2. For those unfamiliar with the UK app you can apply to 5 only. And only to Oxford or Cambridge but not both. For the top unis she needs 3 5s in math and science.

Canadian universities are great for students who want to go international, but not too far away. Sticker prices are often lower than at US private colleges. Some even have the fancy schmancy rec centers (UBC—omg).

@ShrimpBurrito, visited UBC last summer. What a beautiful campus and community. Saw McGill a couple of years ago. Another beautiful campus!

My son’s summer camp counselor was very happy with his experience at University of Victoria in BC (currently studies computer science there).

DS20 is taking the SAT today at his school. The school arranges and pays for the entire junior class to take it, which is great because it’s no cost to us and it’s on a school day instead of a Saturday. He did some minimal studying over the past few weeks, mostly Khan Academy SAT practice questions. He took the PSAT in October of his sophomore year (also arranged by the school for the entire sophomore class); didn’t do so great on it, mainly because a lot of the math was from classes he hadn’t taken yet. Hopefully, having that extra year and a half of math, including a great Algebra 2 teacher this year, will help get him some more points.

Has anyone had experience trying to get into an NYU tour/info session as a walk in? We have to cancel our scheduled tour (long story, but basically my fault) and try to go another day on walk-in basis, since all of March is booked solid on their website. Not sure how good a chance we’d have? We can always do a self-guided tour if we don’t make it in.

D20 took the ACT in school on 2/20. No scores yet. Does it take 3 weeks? Hmm

@chb088 those who took it feb 9 got results feb 22. see pm

Ours are not yet on ACTStudent website. I’ll give it a few more days.

question: when kids take sat or act through school (here it is a state test for all juniors) – is it the same test as everyone else that month? Or a different test? And it counts as a legit score, right?

Yes it counts as a legitimate score. It isn’t the same as everyone that month but might be the same as everyone that day.

Will the state test scores be posted to the ACT website or is that just the national ones? My daughter’s school uses Naviance but it takes them a while to upload scores. Been checking act.org for the Feb 20th test results, but so far, nothing. Feb.9th national test was posted on the website 11 days later.

@2manycollegequestions4me - I don’t know about the state ACT test score release but I do know the SAT state score release took much longer than a normal SAT test. I would have your DD ask her GC when to expect the scores. Our school’s guidance office let the kids know the time frame and the expected release date. Hope this helps.

Spring break starts in T-8 hours! Haven’t seen S2 look this happy in a looong time.

@2manycollegequestions4me D20 also took the state ACT at her school. She got a pamphlet that said something along the lines of that we would get her scores in the mail before they are posted on the website and that it takes longer than those kids taking the test on a national test date.
