We applied to a total of 10 schools, about $700 in application fees (including slideroom fees for supplemental materials). Comparing it with the COA on the horizon this might be a small potato, but it is more than I spent on this Christmas. ?
@Happy4u My son is really struggling deciding between two of his five acceptances. Weāve pretty much decided the other three are a no, but weāre not going to officially say that until the financial aid is in. DS talked to a couple brothers (twins) this weekend that were a year older than him in scouts. One went to the one school and one to the other and for the same major DS is considering, so he was hoping to get a lot of insider information there about which would be the better choice, but it turns out they both love where they went. The only thing they agree on is the one school has a lot better food.
@bgbg4us - Itās my understanding that FAFSA submits your info to selective service for you. I mean, they ask if you want them to do it, so I would assume if you say yes that they do.
Would love to par down D20s list but she actually loves all the school she applied to and would be thrilled to be at any of them so FA offers paired with merit are likely to be a major deciding factor. Only one school has provided her a full offer with FA and for that school she is up for an additional scholarship as well.
In the meantime she has a scholarship interview this weekend. She has very long, straight hair. She hates buns. Any ideas what she should do with it? She is thinking a French twist but Iām not sure.
@makemesmart - You can just register online at https://www.sss.gov/Home/Registration
S applied to seven schools. Heās been accepted to all, with one decision coming later this month. He has narrowed the field down to three. He would go to all three if he could! We are hoping that when final merit numbers come in, the choice will be obvious. If numbers are close, S is going to have a hard time, I think.
DD20 could narrow it down very quickly if her two favorites would give her scholarship answers! ?
Congratulations @ShrimpBurritoā¦I will be sending you (and everyone else in this situation) good vibes that merit/scholarships decisions are released quickly and with best result!!
@cshell2
Thank you.
In case you have not seen this thread, I found it to be immensely helpful just by reading the first couple pages http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1769222-checklist-for-parents-of-incoming-freshmen.html#latest
Jumping in from the 2022 thread; what SAT subject test Chemistry books/prep materials did your kids used and liked? Appreciate any tips!
@ITBGirl, We havenāt actually visited b/c sheād need a great scholarship to make it feasible. She applied and should be competitive, so fingers crossed. Iāve heard nothing but good things about App. Would love to hear your thoughts.
Are you in NC? If so, does App have a good reputation in the state? Sheās interested in finance at the moment, so sheās worried if App has the right business āconnectionsā - her words, not mine.
@makemesmart, yes, it does add up! I actually refuse to add up what weāve spent so far, and we havenāt paid for a visit yet. And prices are so all over the place - FSU is only $30 while other state schools are $85. Really?
She applied to three schools largely b/c they were FREE and EASY. She likes them. but theyāre reaches and Iām not sure I would have paid for them! She also took U Chicago OFF the list after looking at the prompts. Too much work for such a long shot.
Some of you are ahead of where we are in the journey - as youāre already thinking about decisions! We are trying to NOT think about college for a few months, so where to go is on the shelf until we now what the option are.
(Well, Iām on CC so I might be thinking about it just a bit, but daughter is doing better than I am. ) Our seniors should remember to ENJOY their final year of high school!
@TrendaLeigh (and @ITBgirl ), I am in NC and work in finance with plenty of App State alum. If she loves the school, then it will be a good fit for her.
@TrendaLeigh I also live in NC and work for an accounting firm. App is very well known, and we hire a lot of amazing candidates from there!
@cshell2 Iām guessing the U of Minnesota isnāt the school with the good food?
Of the 5 acceptances so far, sheās been able to eliminate one due to cost and is waiting to hear on final merit from two of them. One that she is waiting on is low on her list but if they come through with merit and honor college - they suddenly move up much higher - but wonāt know that until February. Thankfully, sheās a gymnast about ready to start her competitive season - so that should keep us busy for the next 3 months.
@SilverGrass I donāt think either of my kids used subject test prep books. They prepped for the AP exams and took the subject test around the same time. In case you werenāt aware, there is a forum devoted to discussing subject test prep. http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/sat-subject-tests-preparation/
@lkg4answers Thank you for the link! I saw that earlier parents suggested the book they like for SAT math and thought perhaps there is one for Chem sub test, so asked
So I just noticed most of the college marketing emails have an unsubscribe button. D20 went through and unsubscribed to any school she was not applying to. If only we had seen this in August.
This is very helpful. Thank you!
S20 was already accepted to his top choice, and I donāt think any (possible) future acceptances will change it. He still has one scholarship application left, but other than that he is all done
Time to start working on the incoming freshman check list!
@myrna97 - Nope. They told us there is a reason they donāt give a free meal in the dining hall on tours. Weāre going back in a few weeks and plan to try it out to see for ourselves.
