Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

The final college decision feels pretty heavy in our house right now. D20(2) just found out that she is failing her crohn’s medication and is back in a flare. We need to choose a new drug.

Choose a college. Choose a drug. Every decision seems potentially life altering right now. So many what ifs.
So many secondary decisions hinge on these two choices. May 1 can’t come soon enough.

@Momofmanytoo I’m so sorry. My sis-in-law has Crohn’s, and it’s hard. Very hard at times. Wishing the best for you all.

Hugs to you and your DD @Momofmanytoo ! I hope all is resolved soon.

Hi @Momofmanytoo My S20 also has a chronic GI issue and I am pretty worried about him going far from me. His doc also said that if he goes across the country for college, he will need to find a new doc. It is all pretty complicated.

@Momofmanytoo Feeling for you. We all have worries about finding the right fit but health concerns really heighten the concern!

We’re in Colorado and it’s similar - CU and CSU are more expensive than a lot of OOS schools.

@Johnny523 We are also in CO so have the same situation. My sons both ended up at CU but they also wanted to stay in state. My D20 is set on leaving the state, which works out because with merit at OOS schools, even private, the cost is pricing lower than CU. Go figure.

That’s funny @amsunshine because we are in CA as well and think the prices for the UCs and Cal States are pretty good. Perhaps because my D is going into theatre and we want to be able to drive to see her shows and figured if we had to fly or drive too far, that would add to the cost. We are originally from VA where most of the state schools there have pretty much the same price tag as CA.

My guess is our situation is probably somewhat different in that my D is an NMF and most CA schools don’t offer a whole lot of scholarships for NMF or merit aid in general. Even with flying, our costs end up cheaper OOS.

@amsunshine I am laughing - definitely different situations  Congrats on NMF! That certainly puts a different spin on the OOS option.

I attended a UC way back in the day when OOS tuition at a UC was still reasonable, and I was always amazed that kids from California never considered going elsewhere. These days, with some schools offering full rides to NMF it’s crazy not to at least consider leaving the state. Getting a free ride at somewhere like UF versus paying $31,000 a year for tuition room and board at a UC is worth at least considering!

Does anyone have any clever ways of commemorating your child’s college acceptances? I know some people have t-shirts/hats/sweatshirts from each school but that’s a little pricey if you have a lot of schools. I heard someone say ornaments once(not sure if all schools have one to buy). I have saved all the acceptance letters so my son can eventually keep or discard down the road, but I’m looking for something more creative or artsy. Thanks!

@aschultz You want to commemorate schools that your S20 will not be attending too? Curious why they would want anything?

I consider it an accomplishment that he was accepted at a school even if he doesn’t attend. They weren’t all safety schools.

@aschultz Someone (I think it’s Chuck Todd on Meet the Press) has a collage behind him of all the campaign stickers from the 2016 presidential election. Last year, I thought about doing something similar with all the schools D19 considered, just cutting from the marketing materials that flooded the house. But I never did.

It is Chuck Todd. If you do a google search, you can find one of him with it in the background. Tried to link it but apparently against TOS.

Yale’s Bulldog Days have been cancelled. I’m pretty sure it would not have been a factor in the final decision but we were looking forward to it.

DS20 has no interest in keeping anything from the schools he turned down. He even wanted to get rid of all the shirts and banners and such that they gave him (also why he refused to let me buy him anything on visits pre-decision). I’m a little more sentimental. Luckily his little brother wants ALL THE SWAG he’ll give him so it will get used. That kid was going on school visits with us wearing a t-shirt from one school, sweatshirt from another and hat from a third. He looked very confused. His Chromebook is covered with stickers from 6 different schools as well.

I understand the need to protect vulnerable and at risk community members but anyone else stressed about covid19 and what it might mean as far as graduation and prom? My D20 has prom the first week in April so I’m very nervous they will cancel it. Anyone else feeling like the focus on this illness is sucking the fun out of senior year?

@mbnc1755 i hadnt even thought of prom ?, my S has prom in april as well. Our gov. Just declared a state of emergency, but thankfully so far our city hasnt been affected. Hope it stays that way?

@MBNC1755
DS is worried that his senior year experience is going to be impacted. He definitely does not want school closing/activity cancelling, but it is really not under anyone’s control at the moment. I am telling him, all things considered, safety/health always come first. Let’s hope it won’t be too bad once the weather becomes warmer!
