Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

I have a pretty crushed D20. Her spring break has been extended a week and then moving to online learning. Prom is likely gone (scheduled for early April) and many concerns about graduation. She attends a residential school and friends being scattered all over the country has her so heartsick.

Plus she was deciding between two schools (one she loves beyond everything but the cost is a concern and another that isn’t a perfect fit but an amazing school that has been extremely generous to her). She was going to use admitted students’ days as a final measuring tool… that option is now gone.

I understand the big picture. I really do. Safety first. Keep everyone healthy but she is right- it’s a rotten way to spend your senior year.

@Darcy123 I don’t think doing shifts for prom is exactly what they had in mind when putting forth the recommendation of canceling gatherings greater than 50 people. ?

I’m feeling bad for D20. She won regionals and placed in the top 3 in the state for her DECA category this year. She was headed to TN for Nationals late April/early May, but the school has canceled the trip for now. She has been in DECA throughout high school and was so excited to finally place top 3 in States and make it to Nationals. She is crushed because this was her last chance to go before graduating.

My S20 also bummed out. He had tried for four years with his team to win the states competition and make nationals, They finally did and now the national competition was cancelled. He won several top medals at States and likely would have won a national medal. He is adjusting but it is tough when you worked so hard.

Same here. D didn’t apply to any in-state. But she does have some merit offers that bring some schools down to in-state levels. All would involve plane travel, but I guess that won’t matter if it’s all online anyway. So much uncertainty. How do you even know, at this point, which schools are better at online instruction.

I do hope things are back to normal by fall, but with no vaccine and no treatment, I’m not optimistic.

If I ran Admissions, I would put a lot more students on the waitlist this year.

@momzilla2D All schools suck at online instruction. My D17 is a TA for a large science lecture, and her prof has never done anything more than record lectures for later viewing. D17 is teaching her how to use Zoom, which is a poor substitute for lectures and worse for discussion sections. It should be interesting, but let’s hope there is clarity by May 1 as to whether schools will continue to be affected next fall. I would not choose an expensive school if that were the case. (although we’re stuck since D20 has already committed. )

Yes, everything I’ve read is telling kids to take the spot on the waitlist.

We’re supposed to go to a college reception/dinner tonight. No word on it being cancelled, so I guess it’s still on. The school is not officially going into shutdown mode until tomorrow night after which point everything is supposed to be online only.

Rough week for my D20. Her AP Biology teacher apparently died in his sleep Tuesday AM. He was only 38. Just found out the band trip to California (from Illinois) is cancelled. Had no insurance so $1,500 dollars probably going. My wife’s cousin’s funeral is tomorrow and the teacher’s visitation is on Sunday.

Hugs to your daughter @Cole2020. These are not the kind of memories our kids should be making the end of senior year.

Oh no @Cole2020 – what a horrible turn of events.

Are any of your kids considering universities overseas? My son’s #1 and #2 choices are in the UK… I am considering recommending that he deposit at his #3 choice which is in the US, in case coronavirus impacts his visa process.

Spring Break Cruise cancelled, no back up plan. Senior trip to Chicago cancelled, no refund, and I was a chaperone so double expenses for us, I feel for all the kids right now.

@ITBgirl : Have you looked into every option for possibly securing a refund? ( Credit card company, letter to all booking parties, reach-out to your state’s attorney general, a consumer advocate?)

These are extraordinary times and I would think (hope?) measures are able to be taken across the board by various venues to offer, if asked, refunds or waivers of early cancellation fees and no-refund policies, or even to bank the larger part of an initial fee paid and then allow a later use of those funds.

I hope you can recoup something.

Well, regional band now canceled as well. We had a mandatory meeting for Music program trip to Disney (we are in PA) last night, and as of now, the trip is still on. I suspect if the flights don’t get canceled, and Disney stays open, they may go. But that’s three weeks from now, so who knows what will happen. So far our school district has taken a very rational approach to things. But hysteria is reaching a fever pitch (pardon the expression).

My daughter’s college has announced they are going online and all events up to first week of May are canceled. No word on her commencement yet (graduating in May).

@Waiting2exhale thanks for the advice, the kid’s cruise is okay they can reschedule or may get refund, but the school trip was done by school with no insurance, we paid the school, I wish it was on my credit card. I feel really bad for the kids that got jobs to cover this trip. Maybe we will get something back in the long run, maybe they are trying to give us the worst case scenario at this point!

@mom2jgd my D17 is at St. Andrews. They are still holding classes. PM me if you have any UK questions.

@snakster it’s interesting, Disneyland (CA) just announced it’s closing for the rest of the month, but it seems Disneyworld (FL) which is where I assume you are going has remained open.

D20 was accepted to Wash U in St. Louis today!
Exciting, but tempered by the chaos of the day. D20’s HS had some chaos at school related to communications around the coronavirus. She said it was the most chaotic day she’s ever had at school.

And then, D19 was notified students cannot return to campus, except to move out at a scheduled time. She’s in Florida for spring break, and we’re struggling to work out the logistics, between Florida, Ohio and Massachusetts.

eta: not to mention the trip we are schedule to take next week that is now completely questionable.

I feel bad doing it but I just cancelled some work I had scheduled at my house. Strangers wandering in and out right now does not feel wise. I’ll reschedule once the worst of this passes.
