Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Heartbroken for our senior kids. My D goes to boarding school, and they just announced they would not be returning after spring break and would be taking online classes indefinitely. She had to cancel her senior spring break trip, and may miss prom, graduation, and many other traditions she’s been looking forward to since freshman year. And may never see her classmates on campus again after tomorrow. Furthermore, we had a trip planned at end of month to visit accepted schools that she has never seen (and likely will choose between—still waiting on three decisions). Thinking she may have to choose a college she’s never seen. I want to cry.

@JCAmine Man, that is rough. I am sorry to hear that she may not see her classmates again after tomorrow.

I feel so bad for these seniors including my D. She has not had a great senior year and was actually looking forward to the end of year traditions as well.

it is just so sad for all of the kids re: the disruptions w/ sports and classes and classmates and trips and events and concerts. my own kid is tired of school and doesn’t care about prom or graduation; but he is very worried about HS boys soccer season which he made varsity and will probably finally start. It just hit him today that it could be cancelled; HS spring sports are really nothing compared to some of the biggies, but for those looking for scholarships opps - like junior track kids maybe – it could be harsh. Stay strong you all.

Another D20 here with practice for her sport canceled tonight and meet tomorrow also canceled with likely suspension of the season for the rest of the month at minimum. So sad as she is team captain this year and the girls were really gunning for CIF semifinals, which likely won’t happen at all now. She’s just hoping grad night and prom won’t also be canceled, but it’s looking grim. I’m sad for her and all our kids. These things seem unimportant in the scheme of things, but I know she was looking forward to all of it. Hang in there everybody.

We did some college tours last weekend. I wasn’t sure it was smart to be flying at that time, but now I’m really glad we did. S20 visited a school he hadn’t seen before and it’s now his favorite of the ones he’s gotten into. His school is closing for 2 weeks. We’ll see what happens. School goes late here, prom and graduation aren’t until late June, so none of that has been on the chopping block yet.

Well, our schools will be closed beginning on Monday. Still waiting for details. Ugh.

D20 started her day learning that her field trip for a concert dress rehearsal was cancelled (the morning of), as well as her last choir concert of the year that had been scheduled for tonight. I was so looking forward to cherishing the last time I would see her sing in choir in high school. Then learned this evening that school is canceled effective immediately through 3/30. Next week is her spring break, so they are extending it a week, but not sure why tomorrow also needed to be canceled. She had work to turn in and hadn’t had prior notice. The Denver district has canceled school through 4/7, so 3/30 I guess isn’t as bad. Assuming, of course, that she gets to go back then. I’d really like her to have great memories of her last months in high school.

Well, this week begins the RD notifications, including all the reach schools for my D20. She has had a rough 2 weeks, catching the flu (had the vaccine) and on Tamiflu within 12 hours of symptoms but still a rough go. Then the flu turned into pneumonia. The first antibiotic given didn’t work but thankfully, the 2 she now has, seem to be doing the trick. She heard from one of her dream schools on Tuesday but was too sick to care. She’ll hear from two others today and tomorrow. With Covid-19 though, we will be unable to visit any of the schools she may get accepted into. I hope wherever she chooses to go is the right school, especially as it may be sight unseen and far away from us.

That is an absolutely overboard and lazy response from your child’s BS and hopefully others won’t follow the same path. Who know’s where we’ll be in 2 weeks? They should take it 2 weeks at a time. 3 weeks ago South Korea started on an upward trajectory and now has flattened the curve. I’d think schools will be the first to go back up once we’ve flattened ours since kids are basically not affected. Its very likely they can go back in 3-4 weeks. But even if it turns out they can’t - its too early to say now! I’m so angry on your behalf!

I don’t know if this was posted anywhere else but the College Board just released a statement about AP exams: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/about-ap/news-changes/coronavirus-update

@twokids2go sorry to hear that, I hope she is on the mend and gets good news.

@lkg4answers Thanks for sharing. I hadn’t gone looking for that info yet but it is good to see. We are in the Seattle area and found out yesterday that our schools are closing until 4/27 so it’s good to know that there may (should) be an option for extending test dates.

@lkg4answers thanks for sharing that. Daughter’s school is closed until March 30 at this point and as of now they have not gone online. They had planned to, but due to closure happening sooner than anticipated, it’s uncertain if teachers are able to set themselves up for online learning or not. I am hoping her school will decide to postpone the AP testing based on number of weeks the students are not physically at school. We are really hoping for 4s or 5s on both macro and micro so she won’t have to take them in college, as well as her physics one getting her out of a science gen ed. Gonna be much harder to get those high scores without good instruction. A delay of the testing date would help.

You’re welcome. I was checking out the news on Twitter and Trevor Packer (the guy who posts the AP scores) re-tweeted it.

D20’s hs is going to be closed/going online through April 17, but that includes their spring break. The cc for dual enrollment will also be online at least through the end of the month.

Thanks, @lkg4answers for the info on AP. I’ve been wondering about how those will be handled.

On another note, D20 has a course in two weeks to renew her lifeguard certification – already paid for. According to Red Cross rules, she needs to take it then or risk having to take the whole course all over again, which is more expensive and longer. I’m hoping that doesn’t get canceled/postponed because that could be a nightmare. And if it is canceled or postponed, when exactly would she be able to take a class at all to renew or get a whole new certification? So many weird questions presented by the new world we are living in now.

@amsunshine Oh! D’s lifeguard expires soon. Need ot check her deadline for the shorter course.

Somehow I just found this thread and have been reading through the last 50 pages or so today (stuck at home). What a great thread!

My S20’s HS is starting online classes next week. On-campus learning has been suspended. We have been on spring break the last 2 weeks. He is ready to move on from his HS and didn’t seem too disappointed at first. However, now I am starting to realize all that will be missed!

Not to mention the college implications! Ugh! I cannot help but wonder how this is going to effect the college decisions! S20’s college list came about by college visits. Schools that I thought would have been in the “for sure apply” category got removed after visits and some that we tacked on last minute visits became real contenders. It is a hard enough decision to make. I cannot imagine making decisions without a visit. Yet, many will have to do just that.

We were going to try some more Spring visits, especially to a couple of EA honors merit money admit schools. Looks like that will not be possible. I am grateful that we were able to revisit his REA school in February.

We are in the same boat of potentially choosing a school without a visit. After visiting so many it seems crazy. But we were waiting on decisions from a few reaches before visiting. She just got into WashU RD and is excited but frustrated about not being able to visit. I’m hoping she gets some more good news in the next two weeks but that will make this even harder.
I really feel for these seniors with all of the cancellations, although it’s even worse for college seniors. We are starting online classes here Monday!

@twokids2go , I’m sorry things have been so rough for your daughter. Hopes she’s feeling better soon and congrats on her acceptance!!

Anyone else hear from UC Davis? My son was happy to hear he was accepted, although he’s still waiting to hear from the remaining UCs. . .

@pickledginger Congrats on UCD! My oldest goes there if you have any questions.

Hi - I have a question!
S20 is waiting to hear from few schools. If he doesn’t get into them, he will go to IU.
Can he sign up for housing at IU? Is this considered ok or no? He has a specific preference for a dorm and knows it’s based on first come first serve, but at this point I’m not sure he’s going to IU so I’m not sure if he should wait until April when he’s heard from everyone.
What do you think?
