I am very happy that our kids are pretty much done with their HS education. Can you imagine being a 2nd semester junior and having your SAT cancelled?
I really feel for parents of those juniors on the Class of 2021 thread that have had their tests cancelled or are stressing about the June tests. We feel so fortunate that D21 is totally done with testing. There are only AP tests left and it remains to be seen if/how/when those are going to happen this year, but we can live without doing those. Hopefully, getting refunds will not be too difficult if they don’t go forward.
Well some of us have a D20 dealing with loss of prom, graduation and last performances AND a S21 dealing with not only missing his scheduled April SAT, but also the cancellation of his spring season in the middle of recruiting. Fun times.
I truly feel for everyone as they adapt to this situation, but at least we are not yet dealing with the same as what Wuhan or northern France have/are. Stay healthy everyone!
@Darcy123 I feel you. My kid is class president so has spent all year organizing March -June activities, celebrations and events.
My D was so excited to do a show with a community theatre group that she finally had a chance to work with and was cast in a show of only 9! Too bad it has been canceled. Trying to keep her positive and realize the bigger picture but that is hard for a teenager.
Yes I feel bad for the jrs that have not got the SAT scores they want. So thankful mine 2021 got the score she wants in March of 10th grade. But worried about the AP test for sure. But my heart is breaking for the 2020 kids the most.
My parents have half my son’s college savings in an UTMA that they control. For the past year I’ve been hinting (hoping) they would move it into something safer than the 100% stock fund it was in, but alas I think a large chunk of the college account is gone for the time being. I’m thankful we won’t really NEED it for a couple years and can get by with the 529 I have and maybe subsidized loans/work, but it sure makes me feel better about going with the cheaper school option.
@cshell2 we switched to something conservative about 6 months ago for our 529 and are very thankful as we definitely need all that is in there both for our D20 and S18.
I actually got a call from my D20’s counselor this morning. Very impressed that she’s in a class of 580 and he reached out to us. He is emotional about all of this, too, for the high school seniors, and I know will be pressing the administration to have some kind of commencement even if it’s late. I feel better knowing someone is in our corner and is seeing what this is doing to the seniors.
S20 got into American (International Studies) RD yesterday. The merit and financial package is OK, but not enough to bump it to #1 on his list.
Not going to add much to the end of senior year comments, but a giant thumbs down!! So sad.
My college kid is doing well with the on-line classes. She is studying a lot and already took a few online tests/quizzes. She settling in the new routine much faster than I thought. It is much harder for my highschooler though.
Many decisions coming up but nobody is as excited anymore. On the other hand she only applied to near by schools so we will not have to make decisions about location.
D20 got admitted to American for SPRING 2021 with no merit at all, yesterday. Wow. Big thumbs down. Trying to get her to take the Full Ride at home but having trouble keeping her here in state.
My D20 and the rest of her class (very small senior class) have a group text going which started because they were planning their senior prank before school went online. She says most of the other kids think spring sports championships, grad night, prom and graduation will all still happen as scheduled, and this is just an extra long spring break. I really wish that were true. I kind of feel like we are all in different stages of grief – denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. I’m in the depression/acceptance stages.
@amsunshine I agree, everyone is at different stages of acceptance! Just look at those photos of everyone on the beach in Florida, compared to the Shelter in Place in some areas.
Went out just long enough today to mail the returns of potential prom attire. A bit sad but not as sad as getting stuck with multiple options she has already decided will not work. I would rather scramble later to find something appropriate when/if prom happens. It might be in July at a private venue that the parents arrange, for all we know right now.
Feel very bad for who ever effected with the COVID19 and eveyone including for my Junior and Senior ones as everything cancelled and might not return back to their last few months of school before college and for all the testing to be done by next college deadlines, but safety is important for all of us. I just hope all colleges will change their commit day from May to June as I know already bunch of them already done it, but have not seen any top colleges done that yet. May be after all decisions comes out next two weeks will know.
Understand. I just paid $300 (splurged a little since it was her senior prom) for a dress two weeks ago that may now never get worn. And I don’t have the heart to tell my daughter that we should return it if prom doesn’t happen.
I’m pretty sure that prom and graduation will be cancelled. Finals for a lot of teams have already been cancelled (in DS’s case, that meant a few math leagues and science, but I know it’s also music districts and athletic events).
People are expecting that even with excellent social distancing, the peak won’t be for another month and a half (late April) - I can’t see school resuming before a month or so after that, and for most, seniors are out of school by late May.
We were notified yesterday that prom, senior picnic day and the theatre production ( which my son is a part of) were canceled. No mention of graduation. It’s almost a given that kids will not graduate on the day they are supposed to though (May 7th), My only hope is that it gets postponed.
