Thanks, guys! I should clarify, that although I’m face-to-face with my students during daily “hangouts,” I’m not really able to do lectures. We’re going through the chapter and I’m helping them with problems. And the last lab of the term I had to move to an online platform. So @holychild, it’s not really the same for my students, either.
My first thought (a week or so ago) was gap year. My second thought was gen ed courses (maybe part time). Depending on the school, if D20 gets into her dream school, I’d want her to accept admission, even if that means a semester or 2 may be online instruction. But for her most important courses, I’d prefer she has the benefit of in-person classes. That may mean it takes her >4 years to graduate. That’s ok. (took me 4 1/2 years and I didn’t really have an excuse) The r&b savings from year 1 can help cover anything beyond year 4. But of course a lot of that depends on the economy and personal finances.
Anyone else waiting on decisions today?
D20’s results have been a mixed bag. Am glad that she cast a wide net because I couldn’t necessarily have predicted some of these. She’s been accepted and waitlisted by a few reaches and was rejected from a match.
3 more coming out today!
She receieved a likely letter last Friday from Cornell and has been riding high since then, which I think has taken the sting out of some of all these senior events/performances being canceled and potentially canceled.
Last night she was rejected from Swarthmore and Amherst, but accepted to my most very favorite school that we toured: Hamilton. I wish I could go there!
Just a week ago, she was leaning towards staying in-state and FSU, and we have paid the housing deposit. I was excited about the possibility of her attending: beautiful campus, close enough to drive to, and the price is right. Now, things are uncertain again.
She doesn’t own a proper, warm winter coat or boots, so I welcome any recommedations!
Why are you now uncertain about FSU?
I too think colleges might not give full semester credit for truncated AP’s. For D, only Calc BC really matters, and now I am thankful it is a DE class (taken at school, but automatically given credit at a local cc), so she and her classmates may be at an advantage here
@amsunshine I’m personally not; we actually all really like FSU. I probably didn’t word that right: I just meant uncertain in terms of her now being undecided about where she will go.
@AlwaysLearn
Yes we’re waiting on decisions here, too. It’s just that added level of stress that we don’t really need right now! S20 has also had a surprising mixed bag of results, getting deferred from his favorite which should’ve been a match. While also being given tons of merit to other higher ranked schools. So he’s on edge, we’re on edge, and we’re all trapped here working from home!
Good luck to you!
Good luck to all awaiting decisions today. My D doesn’t have any today, but her final two are released next week. We think she’s narrowed her choice down to FSU, but will wait at least another week or two to have her make the final decision.
How does lab work distantly/online? DS’ school will be starting online learning next week. It will be interesting
@makemesmart - re lab work online - in one case, for chemistry, I found that another teacher had already written some software to let kids do combinations that were assigned for the lab, and “see” what happens. I think it’s very variable. For middle school, I could imagine some kids doing experiments with household items.
Haven’t you already paid and registered? This year it had to be done by late November
We only paid half of the fee in November. Our school opted to collect half in November and the other this month. (The schools aren’t required to pay CB until June; only the ordering date was moved to November). So we are just going to forfeit that money we paid in November as the cancellation penalty.
Good luck to those still waiting! DS20 was accepted to American U and waitlisted at GWU this week. Tomorrow should be BU and he got an email today saying NEU decisions will be out next week. He had been deferred from EA so it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster. I am worried that they are going to cut back on the number of kids they can take since they very likely might not be able to have kids overseas next fall who were admitted/expected to be there. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any more stressful!
At least we should know in a week. Then decision time.
While I wait for my son to wake up to check on BU, I am thinking about the top 2 contenders where he has been accepted so far. Pitt vs American.
He has been thinking of International Relations which is the major he applied with to all the schools that have it. PITT doesn’t, he would have to go with poli sci/certificate in IR.
American has such an edge with internships. He got more $ from American, but it will end up being around $5-8k more a year (still trying to figure that out). Both are OOS.
Pitt really impressed us on our visit. He seemed to really love the school spirit and sports aspect. Bonus (for him) is his girlfriend is a freshman there.
American is OOS too, but we have lots of family nearby.
Anyone have any input on either school? I know DS20 is worried about a lack of school spirit at American. And it was the one school on every tour we did that gave me pause. Fabulous tour guide, loved the IR dept. But so many of the kids looked burnt out as I watched them.
We are still waiting on the white whale, NEU. Should know that this week.
He is also in to several others, including UMASS (in state) which I wish he would consider but he has never liked. But for now it seems PITT vs American
If he’s serious about IR, American for sure makes the most sense.
Not waiting on any acceptance decisions but still waiting on honors/presidential scholarship info for one. Had thought we’d hear about presidential two weeks ago and honors mid week this week but still nothing. Hopefully we’ll hear soon because she definitely can’t make a decision until we know about these two things.
I keep wondering if we will be late on hearing things that are scheduled to come from any university office right now. If they are working from home, or limited, how does this affect their processing of normal release dates, etc?
Although we are just waiting on a few specific scholarships and one university’s housing contract to find out if D20 got into a certain learning community. But still, these things are what will help us make our final choice. Hoping they are on time!
@mtemmd we toured American, GWU and Georgetown two summers ago. We are also in state for UMass Amherst. My daughter was really bent on IR and really wasn’t feeling American for some reason. I’m thinking the size and that while it was in DC, it is not downtown. I know you said you are waiting on Northeastern and that’s where she’s going. The deal is though that she will do international business (they are well ranked) with a minor in IR if she desires. I’m worried about job prospects with IR and I guess that’s why I steered her away from BU as that was an option for her as well. BU has a school for global studies, which is amazing, but that would “suck” her in and being an athlete would likely prevent her from committing 100%.
@MAandMEmom -my daughter had the same reaction to American - just did not get a good feel. I thought it was also because we toured it the day after we saw Georgetown, and let’s face it, the campuses can’t compare. She is down to 2 schools, with International Business at Northeastern being one of them, but if she gets the fully tuition scholarship at Loyola Chicago, that’s where she’s going.
So interesting that we all had the same reaction at American. We went last spring, and it was one of those schools that I really wanted to revisit to see what a second impression gave. Our tour guide was tremendous but I kept thinking the kids around campus looked burnt out.
We also did it on the heels of GWU and a quick self tour of GT.
I would love to nudge him toward international business. We shall see. I love how fluid NEU is about changes. Wish we had done ED now. Decision would be made.
Oh well, can’t go back, can only go forward!
