Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

@samsmom20 Is the free AirPods offer only if you make the purchase at an Apple store or online with Apple? We debated buying a MacAir thru Apple or thru Costco and Costco prices were better (they are having a sale so their i5 MacAir was only $50 more than than the i3 MacAir from Apple). We ended up ordering from Costco and it should be arriving next week. But would be a nice bonus if we could get the free AirPods too!

@Lemonlee I believe the airpod deal is only available if you buy directly from Apple.

Question about sending AP scores to the admitted college:
DS20 took AP tests/classes from freshman year (2017-20). College board has one free AP score send - wondering if it includes all scores from previous years or just this year’s scores? (his college is honoring only some of the AP’s - he took most of those tests in previous years - not sure if he has to send a separate score report for previous years).

Thanks.

I’m pretty sure that those score reports include all AP scores from all years, @hs2020dad

Yes, @hs2020dad all AP scores will be sent. Please note that the deadline to request is 6/30. Students will then tell their school which credit they will claim and which they will not.

@Lemonlee before you buy the Mac, check to see if you can buy it through your student’s university. At my son’s school, b/c we purchased his Macbook through their program, then he is eligible for a loaner if his needs repair, and in some cases, the school’s tech department can assist if tech support is needed. We had to go to the university website’s tech department where there was a link to purchase. Clicking on the link took us directly to the Apple website, but we were “in” the university’s store within Apple. When I bought his last summer, the deal was for Beats not AirPods.

Oops, just saw that you already ordered yours. You may still want to check with your university to see if they offer a similar program as you could return the Costco one if you wanted.

Williams decided to copy Bowdoin’s plan about canceling sports but not the “freshmen only” fall. Offering a tuition discount instead. Interested to see what Amherst does.

As the parent of an incoming freshman at Williams, the tuition reduction was quite a nice (and completely unexpected) surprise when announced yesterday.

Very nice!

D’s college seems to be moving forward with their annual 3.9% tuition INCREASE approved by the board back in February!

I’m hoping they use some of that money for good use during this pandemic and put in all of the safety precautions combined with a decent freshman experience?

I’ll be giving the college my own letter grade on how they did come thanksgiving week when the semester ends!

We pulled the trigger on the Dell 2-in-1 that O. really wanted, she’s looking forward to upgrading from her ‘super slow’ 5 year old computer.

She also got dorm and roommate assignment, emails flying back and forth
plans being made.

Forward movement, fingers crossed that Covid numbers stay fairly low and her college plans for fall will not change.

Amherst is copying Bowdoin’s plan, but also including sophomores to fill the 1200-1300 singles. Per Biddy:

Every student will have a single room and the density in residence halls will be reduced from the usual levels. Students will be able to choose up to six people with whom they would like to live or people with whom they share a particular interest. Groupings of students on a floor will work together with a resident counselor and a community development coordinator on ways to organize their time in the residence halls consistent with applicable safety precautions.

@beebee3 my son has the Dell 2 in 1 and loves it. My daughter has a macbook pro and loves it.

@trippfolsom Good to hear positive review, she was adamant about which computer she wanted so its nice to hear someone else’s child loves it. Our next child is pushing for MacBook pro; we are laughing at the idea a sophomore needs one for high school.

For those looking at new MacBooks
Please Google some articles that came out recently recommending not to get one this year. Since apple committed to stop using Intel chips, in favor of their own (in the future) - these tech experts believe that the Intel chip Macs won’t be supported for very long after. Take a read.

Too late for us. D just purchased the MacBook Air 13” display, w/512 GB SSD and 16GB RAM. We got free Air Pods (that are now mine!) and we can trade in her old MacBook for some Apple credits.

My D19’s school just rescinded their offer of admission to an incoming student athlete from the high school class 2020. This student had posted racist and homophobic content on their social media that ended up shared with both their high school and college. Colleges definitely do care about this stuff, so kids should always be aware of what they’re putting out into the world- I’m not sure if that kid thought his stuff was private or not, but it never really is. Honestly, the school wasn’t the place for someone with those beliefs, but I wonder if the kid could’ve grown from the community in a positive way.

I’ve been mulling over laptops. DS doesn’t really have any preference, and just said he wants it to have a touchscreen. The computer recommended by his particular college at the university is a Dell 2 in 1, so it’s good to hear others are getting them as well. It’s been forever since I bought a laptop. We’ve just had Chromebooks and DS has his gaming desktop.

USC Trojans, per their provost and senior vp says "our undergraduate students primarily or exclusively will be taking their courses online in the fall term, and on-campus housing and activities will be limited. "

How will this affect the football game vs. Alabama on Sept 5?

I don’t think it will effect it much at all. Whether kids take classes online or not doesn’t have any relevance. Now, if cases in the city of LA continue to spike, officials might highly restrict or eliminate game attendance by fans but rest assured, no way they cancel the game between two Power 5 conferences (PAC 12 & SEC).

NCAA has said no students on campus = no sports. Has this changed?
