Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

DD20 gat her AP scores as well. 4s and a 5 which gives her plenty of credit and sophomore standing, if she claims it all. Plan is not to claim the class within her major. She is well positioned to take a semester to work in a lab and study for the MCAT. She can also double major, if she chooses. Finally! Something that has gone as planned!!

O. got her AP scores as well, all 5s. Her school only takes a certain number of outside credits (will give placement for others) so she is happy she maxed out the number of credits they will take.

It makes study abroad and double majoring more than possible, so she is happy and we are looking forward to the break from CB until her younger sisters have to take those darn tests.

Just catching up here. Wondering about the 7 day testing requirement
how will they deal with it if the test takes more than 7 days for results? My D’s both got tested last Saturday, July 11th, and we still don’t have the results. They both had mild symptoms, and one had just returned from a trip with friends, so we had them test, and they’ve been quarantining ever since. They are feeling fine now and are getting stir crazy. I check the lab portal several times a day.

Maybe Hamilton has access to a rapid test to test all the students when they get to campus, but wonder what they’ll do if the student doesn’t have results from the 7 day prior test before returning.

@momzilla2D Hamilton is helping students that cannot obtain a test (some states have restrictions on who qualifies for a test), or cannot obtain a test that will deliver results in 7 days. They have contracted with a medical service that will mail testing kits to students at their homes. Students will mail the test kit back to the testing agency and results will be posted 24-48 hours after they receive the sample. The only catch is if your student is under 18, or if you are in Alaska, Hawaii, or another country. In that case, you are on your own for securing a test.

I must say, I have been very impressed with their planning for students returning in the fall.

@ProfSD That sounds good. If it were me, I’d request the school’s test kit. We had no idea results would take so long here. We’re in MA, not a current hot spot. We were told results would take 3-7 days, lately averaging 5 days. D20’s results took 7 days, D19’s took 9 days. Both Negative, thankfully.

Wonder how Hamilton is able to accelerate the testing.

might be using the same company that all of the NESCACs are using. I keep forgetting the company’s name but it’s in Boston and is saying 24 hour turn around time.

Ironic that we in the Boston area can’t seem to get that test.

Yep. Broad Institute.

Hmmm
this is concerning. We are also in MA and were told results take 3-5 days. A colleague had a saliva test that was back in 3 days, but hearing your experience has me anxious. I guess I should ask Hamilton for a test after all. I wonder if they’ll hesitate given we’re in MA and usually results are much quicker.

random question- is the “ask your question now” button how one would start a new thread ?

^^ Broad Institute

oh, nvm everyone. i figured it out

My daughter’s college has decided to go remote this semester and are only allowing a few students back on campus based on their needs. Its so disappointing to have this end to the long journey that was the college admissions process. Of all the colleges that she narrowed her choices down to, this was the last one we would have imagined would go remote.

@holychild I’m so sorry! I know how much your D was looking forward to heading to campus this fall. :frowning:

Sorry as well. This is so crazy. My S was recently sent an email that he will be notified in August as to whether they can come in the fall. We can’t even book flights since no move in day has been announced. If move in occurs, we are not allowed to help with move in - everyone takes what they can carry.

I’m sorry for all of you whose kids aren’t going to be able to go.

My S is going to Arizona. Their plan is to test every student when they arrive for move in and anyone who is positive is immediately taken to a quarantine dorm. They are saying to pack a bag with everything they will need for two weeks - clothes, toiletries, laptop, school supplies, etc, because that is all they will be allowed to take with them. They won’t have access to the rest of their things or anything they had pre-shipped to their room.

If they are negative, then they have a 30 minute slot with two helpers to move their stuff in. They’ve expanded the move in timeline to over a week with no fees for early move-in to spread out the arrival times. We already have flights booked, so hopefully he can get a time on one of the days we were planning on. If not, we can move the flights if we have to.

@Johnny523 I don’t understand how it’s possible to pack a bag for 2 weeks! What about towels? Sheets? Pillow? Plus all the other things you noted? That is impossible for a person to pack and carry by themselves. I mean really? I’m assuming they just don’t want anyone to come on campus at all. I wouldn’t want to be there with those instructions/expectations. My .02 for whatever it’s worth.

Yes, I was thinking the same about packing. Just the towels, sheets, shampoo etc and you got more than 2 bags.

I’m assuming they are supplying bedding and such.
