Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Best college news in a while! DD20 has credit posted in her college degree progress tracker for this year’s AP exams! She won’t know her exact scores until next week but at least she knows she scored high enough for credit. Given all the adapting she had to do this year, that is good enough for me, regardless of what the number score is.

Beyond frustrated with D’s high school! We are in NY, still with a lot of lockdown restrictions in place. Our school has been holding out for in-person graduation and prom. They were originally scheduled for June and obviously needed to be rescheduled - now early-August. With coronavirus cases starting to tick back up, the school is looking at moving those events to December now. Come on!! My D is beyond HS and trying to move forward. School is reluctant to start allowing kids to pick up diplomas because they want them all to be present for the in-person graduation whenever it is.

@roper1313 D20 school also received AP scores, which we are able to see under “scores submitted” tab. This is helpful as she will be registering for fall semester clasees on July 22 and now have more time to research which credit to claim or not (there is a charge for claiming credit). Also some people recommend still taking the classes even if the AP scores exempt you from it.

On a separate note, D20 just got her campus move-in date (8/9) and she has a single room (I think most do?). Once she moves in to her dorm, she has to quarantine for 48 hours as they wait for her CV-19 test results. We can finally book our flights, been a long time coming!

Just got move-in info here, funnily enough same move-in date as socaldad2002’s D20. Sounds like the two (different) schools have very similar CV-19 protocols. O. is trying to remain positive with the idea of 48hr quarantine, she says she will use that time to organize her room.

We’re driving her out, and right now are in the thick of getting the last of the internet ordering done for her ‘must-haves’. Since the school schedule is ending at Thanksgiving for in-person, we convinced her not to try to pack any cold weather clothes - if it gets unseasonably cool early, we can always mail coats/boots/etc.

Trying to help her pack as lightly as possible while also making sure her dorm room will look the way she wants. She picked up some great posters for cheap at allposters over July 4th weekend (4 huge posters for less than $30 total, woot!), and she and her roommate continue to plot and plan, lol.

D20 got credit for all 3 APs she took this year but was most excited about her AP Stat score as she now won’t have to take any math in college. ?

She’ll get her move in date on Monday for a day from Aug 11-14. 25% of each dorm will move in each day and they’ll do a small in person orientation for each group the day after they move in. She’s in a quad suite with a bathroom shared between the 4 of them which I do like better than the hall baths but they do have to clean it themselves which could be interesting!

We just ordered her laptop and she’s got most everything she needs for her dorm room (and then some!).

Covid cases are rising like crazy here but everything is still moving forward for the time being!

D’s college received her scores, but hasn’t posted them yet. She’s too embarrassed to ask the score! So we keep waiting. This is so silly of CB, why send them to colleges but not to students!

@socaldad2002 the move in dates are requests, the school can change it before they confirm it with your child. My DS picked the 9th as well. He wanted a double though, but we totally understand the reasoning for freshman having singles. I am just glad they finally gave us move-in days!

@suzyQ7 how was CB able to send scores to your child’s college? Perhaps you chose their free score report option? Just not sure how they would know what college the student is planning to attend.

We did use the free score report option. The point I was trying to make is that college board has sent the scores to colleges, but not to the high schools and not to students. They sent them a FULL week early. Annoying

So jealous of everyone that has a move in date. Still nothing from DD’s college. Rumor is they will be released next week. I’m thankful we are only a few hours away, and don’t have to deal with booking flights last minute. All we know so far is that freshmen and transfers move in August 17, 18, or 19. She needs to get tested 4-7 days before she arrives, and then again when she gets to campus. Then she will quarantine for 48 hrs. until the results come in. Seems most colleges have similar plans.

@helpingmom40 I sympathize with you. DD had a drive through graduation early June where she received her diploma, but the HS has now planned an in-person, outdoor graduation ceremony late July. Due to high state Covid numbers last spring, they didn’t want to risk an in-person ceremony. Some parents and students complained, so they added another ceremony (socially distanced, outdoors) now that numbers are way down. At this point though, most of the kids don’t even care about doing something else. DD has already asked if we are okay with her skipping this second ceremony because she is “over high school” already and looking forward to college. Most of her friends feel the same way. It will be interesting to hear how many students actually attend that in-person ceremony in a few weeks. Personally, I’m glad I don’t have to sit outside in a stadium, baking in the hot sun!

Had hoped to see credit for AP tests on my dd’s portal (FSU), but nothing showing. Though according to College Board they got her scores on 7/8. Ah well, guess we’ll have to wait until Wednesday.

No move in date for her yet but it seems they will let the students pick between Aug 13th and 20th and once a day is full then that day can’t be selected any more. We are hoping for a slot on the earlier side so have told dd to make sure to check her FSU email daily! I might actually ask for her log in info so if the registration email gets released while she’s at work either my husband or I can pop in and snag the day we want before it fills up.

Which school @ProfSD ? DD20’s school has not given us any info on that so I fear she will need to be in state for a time before move in to do the same.

Hamilton. They are requiring all students to obtain a test within 7 days of returning to campus. You cannot move in unless the test is negative, of course. They will help any student that has trouble securing testing due to financial constraints or lack of availability. Once students are on campus, Hamilton covers the testing. They expect the results back within 48 hours. Orientation starts the 20th-21st, so everyone needs to be clear by then to participate.

@helpingmom40 That sounds incredibly frustrating. If I were a grad there I’d demand my diploma now.

S20 was able to see his AP scores as well! Those tests seem so long ago at this point!

S20 got his AP scores - did well with 5’s - the college accepts a max of 4 course credits and he is using them all towards electives (with AP’s done in earlier years). HS is now truly complete.

Need advice regarding traveling to college - if we drive there, it would be 16hrs drive, so we would end up staying in a hotel somewhere in between (each way) in addition to a hotel near college. Alternative is to fly (3hrs direct flight) - then rent a car at the destination. What do you think is more safe from covid perspective: (short-flight + rental_car + single-hotel) vs (own-car + multiple hotels during the visit)

I feel like either has same amount of risk - trying to see what other people in similar situation are doing.

In general, driving would be safer even if you have to stay in a hotel because the chances of getting the virus from a hotel room (i.e. from a surface) is a lot more difficult than person to person, like being in a crowded, tight space like an airplane.

With that said, I think the one time risk is fairly low either way. My D20, wife and I pretty much have to fly 4.5 hours (2,500 miles). I have not taken a flight since early March so it will be a little disconcerting boarding that plane in August! Hoping it’s not a full flight?

DS got his one and only AP score today. He got a 5 in AP Calc, but still plans to take Calc 1 anyhow despite his advisor telling him to skip it. He doesn’t feel he really understood the material at the end, but he must have understood it pretty well? I don’t know. I’m not going to argue with him about it. If he goes straight to Calc 2 and struggles he’ll blame it on me.
