Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

@NateandAllisMom Congrats on the ACT - 33 is a great score!!

@burghdad Congrats on Alabama - hope she loves it!

Just a heads up, we paid to send one SAT score on 10/20 and I just checked and it was listed as being sent today. I was surprised it took that long, it didn’t matter for this school but I think I will now get on it and send them to all of the schools where she is submitting scores.

@NJWrestlingmom Congrats! D here is in at ECU too, plus Arizona and ASU. Don’t think we will hear about others until Dec/Jan now.

That really seems like the best way to approach the final decision. Hopefully everything will work out where she gets a great deal at one of the schools in her top grouping.

[@TVBingeWatcher2 - LOVED the Queen’s Gambit!!! Binged it Sunday and yesterday. Was hooked immediately. Who would think chess could be so compelling to watch!]

Our big news (finally, lol): S completed CA, and submitted his ED!!!

Surreal. Exciting and freeing.

Didn’t realize how much of a weight it had been on all of us.

Well, that won’t happen. We are full pay so the only schools that give merit are her safeties, not her top choices. Top choices will be $$$. Still, we let S19 go the more expensive route and we will have to see what D21’s choices are in the end!

Congrats to those with new admissions and I hope everyone taking the SAT is now feeling relieved. TY for the excitement over My ACT. I feel some relief but I’m looking forward to when all apps are in. It’s nice to have people to share with who get it.

@MorseLewis S has a rough draft for Boulder’s identity question (not my favorite of S’ essays) and I think he can recycle some of that for his shorter diversity essay for Washington. We looked on Google for some guidance on approaching the questions. Essay Guy and others have some blog discussions re the individual schools’ questions. The second Washington question was a life story shaping your character @ max 650 words. Hope he’s not too burned out to do a good job with that one.

oops - was a typo above meant my S’ ACT of course. LOL.

Congrats to your S on such a great ACT score @NateandAllisMom! My S21 took his last chance ACT last weekend, fingers crossed he gained a few points.

I am envious of those of you who have apps submitted and even better, some great acceptances already. S21 is hoping to submit 4 EA apps this weekend but I think all the supplementals may send him over the edge.

Hi Y’all…nuts and bolts question here. In the first app my D sent, she marked “no” for the CA question (worded something like) will you have any more test sittings). That’s technically correct…she’s registered for one more in November but isn’t going to test again. However, I interpret the question as meaning “will you have any more scores to send.” She may…she has not yet received scores from a mid-October in-school sitting. We don’t know when scores will come in (around Nov 4?) or if they will be worth reporting . I’m not too worried about the CA question, but in her ED and additional EA apps, should she answer “yes” instead?

Another thing I’ve been wondering, while I’m at it: Is there a real reason to go ahead and send off ED2 and RD apps at this point other than the relief of washing your hands of it? My D’s ED school plans to announce decisions in the first week of December (according to her regional AO). Since that decision comes so early, it makes sense to me to hold off sending any more. I figure D can still get all the other apps completely ready to hit send in December, right? D has fee waivers for some schools, and some not. Apart from saving money, it would be nice (if she gets in ED1) not to have to withdraw from all those other schools. A compromise might be to send in the ED2 app in the off-chance they start reading those early?

@inthegarden regarding the ED2 app, I don’t think you can send that in before you hear from the ED1 school (unless you want to send it as RD and then later switch it to ED2). In any case, if it were me, I’d probably just get all the RD and ED2 applications ready but not hit submit unless ED1 doesn’t come through.

@inthegarden Similar situation. D21 is waiting on her score from her 10/14 school test day and is scheduled to take the 11/7 SAT test date too. But her EA school let’s you modify their app once submitted for a 1-week period. So, I’m thinking D21 says yes to future sittings and then if and when the 11/7 sitting canceled, and if her Oct score is not good enough, she can modify app to say no to future sittings at that 1-week post EA deadline.

Wow! Congrats on all the apps and acceptances so far! D21 is finalizing CA essay today to try to get some EA apps in. Quick question, when interpreting self reported scores, some schools request they be put in the school portal (which may take up to a week to receive after application is submitted) Is it adequate to submit scores through CA if official scores are not required? The wording for University of Richmond is confusing…
As per @momtogkc spending the $ to send official scores at this point might not make the 11/1 deadline. Any insight into portal timing and whether I dropped the ball on test score ordering would be great, D21 is driving this process, but missing deadlines was my biggest concern when I was nagging over the summer. It would be ironic in a not funny way if I am the cause of a missed deadline!

I know this question is off the current topic. But, can anyone please share any thoughts, insights about Wellesley college? Thanks!

@Momof0ne - we know several current Wellesley grads and they are wonderful young women. Highly self motivated, in the top of their high school class, kind and very hard working. One took advantage of the relationship with MIT and took several classes there too. It is a tight community, pretty intense academically, they told us it was not competitive, but everyone wants good grades and puts in the time - so can be stressful with so many high achievers.

All the recent graduates we know (3) are currently employed though contacts and internships from Wellesley. One was a recipient of the Madeline Albright fellowship and lived and taught in Asia as part of this program. The campus is beautiful, woods, meandering paths, small lake, a bit of a walk to a small downtown and easy access to Boston. Any more specifics, feel free to message me too and I can try to answer. If you can find the *video from the student led graduation ceremony this past Spring due to Covid - it is worth a watch and I think gives you a sense of the community and sisterhood.

Edit: *NYTimes, March 17th - The Class of Covid, interactive story. Not video - but a slide show. I just read the article again and tearing up

My niece is a 2020 graduate of Wellesley. She loved her 4 years there … well everything except the C19 interrupted final semester. She promptly landed a job at a Top-20 university and is planning on where she might want to enter grad school after a year of working.

As @coffeeat3 said, she was a self-driven type HS student and says that helped her a lot at Wellesley. She made friends fairly quickly, found her “group”, and after a first-year stumble getting used to the work, got acclimated to the work and earned great grades.

@JESmom I love your description of your son from his essays! He sounds introspective, and he must be a good writer.

@JanieWalker My S went into the essay on the CA and spaced it over for a paragraph indentation. I watched him, and you’re right, there were also paragraph spaces which he didn’t take out, so has both! And, I didn’t think about preview.

@MPT3D I can’t know for sure, but we’re going with self-report and then if they want them uploaded in portal, doing that when the email arrives. We’re not paying to send scores unless the school absolutely requires that. My experience the last time around was that schools were pretty flexible. Our older S forgot to send his scores somewhere they required it and the college finally contacted me and I had the school send them, and it was after the deadline. My D said her counselor said they have 6 days after the deadline to upload documents?

My kids had a distance-learning “snow day” last week – the whole district’s internet was down because of a cable that got cut. LOL They were very happy to have a surprise day off!

@Momof0ne I can echo the good words about Wellesley. My (work) partner’s daughter goes there and likes it. I also live very nearby and walk the campus regularly (well when we were allowed to) - great location, great people as far as I can tell.

@inthegarden - I saw that question and interpreted it like you did (i.e., will you have more scores to be sending).

Thank you very much @coffeeat3 , @EconPop and @DavidRoman. I really appreciate the info. Wellesley is my daughter’s top choice, I don’t know why, but she loves the college. We were supposed to go on a tour this summer but COVID happened.
