Oh, gosh…does that mean, then, by answering “no” that the school now won’t take any new scores, on the off-chance that my D scored higher on her latest test? It’s not a school high on my D’s list, and I have little doubt she’ll be admitted (our flagship) but a score difference could mean the difference between honors college or not. Her current score is pretty good, but who wouldn’t want to use the better score if it comes to that?
I guess the CA worded the question when tests were usually given a couple of months apart and students weren’t signing up for every test in sight in hopes of getting a chance to take one.
@inthegarden- I think it’s totally fine if you end up sending more scores to a school. They probably are asking to see if they (AO) should anticipate more arriving scores. I personally think you are fine. (I’m a mom not an AO though so maybe others with more concrete knowledge can chime in and share f/b and lower the anxiety.)
@coffeeat3 , my daughter and I just saw the NYT slideshow, my eyes welled up too. Not sure who was crying more me or her, but she said, its not fair that they didn’t get a proper closure to 4 years of hard work. Thank you for sharing this!
Does anyone know of any universities that offer great merit and have a Direct Entry BSN program? My daughter applied to 8 schools, but it doesn’t look like there’s very good merit opportunity.
She has a 4.5 weighted GPA
No test scores (CA resident, totally locked up where we live). She has a lot of AP/Honors/DE courses and is in the top 5% of her senior class of 680.
Applying to:
PLNU
SDSU
UCLA
UCI
ASU
TCU
BELMONT
CLEMSON
@NurseNat - I could be wrong, but throwing out University of Portland, Seattle University and Gonzaga ? Not sure if all are direct admit - but they are good with merit especially Portland. Do you have tuition exchange with Hawaii - know 1 nursing student there too?
Weren’t people talking about Creighton University having a great nursing program a few weeks ago? Also, I think there was some discussion about University of Dayton. I don’t know myself, but might be worth checking out, @NurseNat.
@NurseNat further out east is Saint Louis University, Duquesne University, Miami of Ohio and University of Delaware. There will be no merit money given at University of Michigan.
Check out U of New Mexico. They have a direct admit program, but it favors instate applicants. I’d reach out to the nursing school and ask about oos direct admits AND what are her chances if she goes to UNM and then applies.
UNM has excellent merit aid and I wouldn’t be surprised if your D would be able to easily meet the requirements for the nursing school.
@NurseNat@burghdad We have good family friends whose D20 got great merit from SLU. They were also surprised —but thrilled — to see OOS merit from U Michigan’s direct admit BSN program, and she started there this fall. It was less than SLU, but enough to help, since they wouldn’t qualify for need-based aid. I’m not sure of her exact stats, but I know she is a strong student.
Marquette might be another idea for direct admission to BSN and merit money.
My kid finally is finishing up the common app essay. Is in school a few days a week and was told by parents not to come home before sharing essay with advisor.
There’s at least one CC member whose son received OOS merit from Michigan, but not for Nursing (LSA, then transferred to CoE). And the CC member mentioned others from his Chicago area getting merit money to Michigan as well.
@Momof3B How did your S21 feel about the school day SAT yesterday? My son took it too, said the reading took him a lot of time, there was a time crunch at the end, but writing and math were ok. I think the score gets released on Nov 19th? Fingers crossed.
Interestingly, he said he felt better about the EBRW overall this time vs the Sept 26 test he took! On the Sept test he did so-so on the writing portion, but raised his math by 50 pts (from his Nov 2019 test).
@kbm770 according to the UMich Common Data Set for 2017-2018 12.9% of the enrolled freshman who had no need got merit money. And the average amount was $4,400.
Is is a great nursing school. But being full pay and with an OOS price tag of about $68.000 a year I don’t don’t hold out much hope that it will be make financial sense for D21 even if she is able to get in.
