Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

Yes

EA deadline is November 1 at 11:59 PM.

Funny, we haven’t heard anything from D21’s school about registration for AP Lit. Are they doing the early payment this year, the way they did last year?

Late to the party, but D21 submitted her 8th app (EA) last weekend. She has her 9th and final EA app due December 1 and will devote all her extra time to that one between now and then. It will be nice to have all of those done! She has two rolling acceptances so far, and one more should come in as soon as the school finds her SAT scores sent to them a month ago. The rest, we will hear about between December and March, I think.

After a very stressful month or so of making no progress, GC was finally able to upload the teacher recommendation from D21’s college professor yesterday to Naviance. Unfortunately, it was too late for one of D21’s reach schools which only accepts 1 teacher rec. D21 had asked the GC to wait until she saw both letters and choose the best one to submit, but the GC didn’t wait and just submitted the other letter that was already uploaded. Sigh. We are sure it was a good letter, too. We had just hoped the GC would review them both before submitting. Oh well. It’s done.

@amsunshine and that GC now will be responsible for the beginning of trust issues for your kid. lol I am certain it will be fine.

Okay I never hope to be in this situation, but to clarify is the deadline the school’s time zone or the student’s for 11:59pm ?

Gosh, I would think the school’s time, in an abundance of caution.

eta: Or maybe whichever is earlier?

I’d check with the school to be absolutely sure, but traditionally, or generally, it’s the student’s time zone.

But with the election, any potential power outages, issues with your internet provider, recent hacking of various hospitals around the country, I’d submit as early as possible.

Stanford is a Common App school and yet specifies Pacific time on their admission website. I find that strange, but it’s a sign to check each college.

Another thought, in past years it was not unusual for some colleges to extend deadlines maybe if they’re feeling short on apps. I’d expect some spam to that effect next week.

A couple of yrs ago, older sibling was offered an individual extended deadline for at least one college - as in, there was an email and then the due date in Common App changed. (Kid submitted on time and was later accepted.)

Georgia Tech just extended their EA2 deadline for those affected by Hurricane Zeta or the wildfires in the west. I’d imagine a lot of schools may do the same.

Hi All, was wondering if anyone who applied to Harvard SCEA, did they also self reported scores on their portal at all and reported through common app and showing on portal received. So not sure to still self report on their portal.

@homerdog of course I checked the 3 schools’ AP credit chart and the engineering flowcharts.

I know that several people’s children here have some overlapping schools with my D!

D and I got the email from her ED school that all her materials have been received, downloaded, ready for review. Three recs (plus the GC) and SATs received as well. Application complete, typo and all! She has a portal! It’s getting real.

Not sure she’s going to get her other Nov 1 EA app out. I told her it’s truly her call. She has only today chosen her supplement topic choice and it’s a bear
weighty topic, up to 650 words , but at least she has something specific to write about. But she has tons of homework just assigned, wants a mental health break of sorts this weekend and the school is a little reachy in selectivity (even though she’s in range) and we’re not sure it’s the best fit anyway. I told her that unless she’s 100% committed to do that supplement well this weekend and has the energy to put into it, her chances may be better RD after doing a great job rather than a rushed job EA.

I just wish there was an EA or rolling admissions match, low match/safety school with no essay that she at least kind of likes for an early acceptance somewhere in case she’s rejected from her ED school. Everything else on her list is either ED or RD.

@burghdad I know it’s frustrating not to earn credit. We all wished for higher AP scores for our kids to help us save money!

The bright side, if your kiddo wants to do premed, the med school care about GPA and MCAT. Retaking will help make it easier to get an A. I actually don’t mind if my kids retake the STEM classes because it’ll help them get an A since their major doesn’t require advanced level courses in the “premed” required classes. That’s the upside

@gotham_mom What made you prefer Amherst over Williams? My D21 is trying to decide which of the two to apply ED. She prefers Amherst for the open curriculum, the consortium, and the college town; however, she’s recently been looking at Williams because they’re better during covid, it’s rumored they have better food, and the people we’ve met have been exceptionally kind and friendly. Both colleges have the social-justice focused courses she’s looking for. Our visit was canceled last March due to covid and any input is appreciated.

@MommaLue my D18 is graduating a year early thanks to getting 35 credits from Clemson for her AP scores. That saves us a year of tuition that can be used for law school.

@inthegarden We are in the same place with D. She had several EA schools on her list and just kept deciding she didn’t love them, so decided not to apply.

We’ve been through the ringer with S. He wanted a school that has a first year hands on design program for engineering so he could decide if that was his path. NU was the perfect school on paper (except for the cold, which he doesn’t prefer), but after visiting and speaking with some engineering kids, who described the quarter system as brutal in engineering, that came off the list entirely. Penn came off the list as well because roads go through the campus and he wants lots of open green space.

He loved Duke’s campus and they have first year design and the engineering kids said the work was manageable, even with another (overlapping) major. But, then S became concerned that they only have 4/5 engineering majors. They don’t have the more hands off majors like systems or industrial.

So then he looked at Columbia, which has so many majors. This was just this past week! But, he’s never been to NY, and the kids on the brochure looked super-fashionable and I got the impression they are very intellectual (S hasn’t been exposed to big city life kids), so even though it looked good on scoir for ED (every kid with his stats has gotten in ED, I’m guessing because most of those kids apply to Harvard, Stanford, etc.) that was eliminated.

So, he looked at Wash U, and Rice again. Both have lots of engineering majors. But, he hasn’t visited, so no Nov 1 ED.

I’m beginning to hate ED. Why can’t all the schools be REA if they want to be selective?

It also bothers me that some kids at their school apply to all the Ivys/T20s, if they don’t get into Stanford, MIT, etc., when we’re taking off schools (like Penn, where he’s a legacy, NU, Harvey Mudd, too ugly) because they’re not what he wants. Their HS isn’t a feeder school and you can see the top schools may accept 1-3 kids max any given year. So, every high stats kid who throws apps out randomly, not even liking some of the schools, is potentially taking possible acceptances from kids who really like those schools.

Sorry for the rant! I’m sure they’ll both “bloom where they are planted.” Love that saying!

No apps submitted here
yet. But she is submitting one EA today and then even though no more EAs she will work through the rest and hopefully get them done just for sanity reasons.
I have not heard at all about AP registration?? Last year there were 18 some odd emails about it and we were all paid by now. Hmmm. Now I am worried. The school is usually on top of it though, so maybe they just aren’t doing it early this year. D21 has 4 and D23 has 3 so will check with them and see if they know. Thinking I should ask the younger one as the senior is EDGY lately

@2Devils our AP deadline was October 20. We definitely didn’t get as many reminders. I only remembered because I put a reminder in my phone.

S21 got his first acceptance in! It’s one of his true safeties and we knew he was already an assured admit but it’s nice to see it official ?!

Last night was Band Senior Night. Even with all the covid precautions and abbreviated activities, our band directors still found a way to let the Senior traditions continue. We were able to hand out Senior Garters and me and two other booster board members were allowed to sit in and record the Senior Speeches. I knew it would be emotional but the water works surprised me lol. At halftime, after the performance, Seniors names (and parents names) were announced and honored. We weren’t allowed down on the field to stand with them but it was nice anyway!

@havenoidea I am sorry to hear your situation! Just want to let you know, we had chance to do an official visit to Rice back in Jan. 2020 (Gush, that feels like a lifetime ago) with D21 & S23. D21 didn’t like it - too big for her (she is a totally small school & liberal art kid). S23 LOVED it
he already knows he is going into engineering
if we don’t get visit any other schools with him (the schools we visited with D21 are not for him) I am sure Rice will be his top choice. Hope this helps!

@Momof3B Our band did a fabulous job as well! Glad to hear there are other programs that understand how important it is to these kids to celebrate what they have worked so hard for. They may not have all of the activities they hoped for but they gave them senior memories!
Congrats on the early acceptance. We have two as well and it is like a weight lifted knowing they have options.
