So excited for my D21 – yesterday she was offered a place in the computing scholars program at UTD. This is one of her very top choices! With that in hand, many of the other schools she has applied to have been crossed off and she will just wait to see what happens with her reach schools. The likelihood of her receiving a comparable offer, even at her reaches is pretty low, however. She is thrilled, and I am super relieved! What a awesome pre-Thanksgiving gift during such a crazy time.
Good luck to everyone! May the odds be ever in your teen’s favor!
D21 changed her mind about her ED2 school yesterday. There are three to which she’d like to apply ED2. She thought she had settled on one choice, but now she wants one of the other two. She has until mid-December to figure it out.
I am stressing over one of her dual credit classes. The professor seems like a hard-*ss. Lots of points for very few assignments. D21 has a solid B right now - and that’s fine. But if it dips to a C then there goes her chances at most (all, probably) of her reach schools, and all at the last minute. It’s an English class and the grading is subjective (whether or not he likes the arguments she writes). She just wrote and asked if there are extra credit opportunities. She also wants to see her midterm exam because she got an 85 but he doesn’t make the actual test available so she doesn’t know what he marked wrong or why. She wants access to the graded exam so she can learn from it, so she can do better on the final. She has 100s in every other grade in the course (tons of assignments worth very few points)…but the midterm brought her overall grade down to an 85. She has worked so hard for so long and has As in all other classes (including other dual credit English courses, one of which she is also taking this semester - she doubled up on English courses this year). If he does not provide access to the graded midterm then she will reach out to the dual credit/high school liaison. Arg.
@JanieWalker Is there no way to discuss with the professor what he wants to see from your D in terms of improvement? Ugh – that sounds frustrating. My D21 had a similar problem last year with one of her classes where she got an F on one of her exams and the professor would not release the test. However, she was willing to discuss the test during office hours and what D20 needed to improve. It was a multiple choice exam (different from an English mid-term, I know), and when my D20 visited her during office hours, the professor realized she had used the wrong answer key for the test. D20 actually had an A. (The whole class benefitted from my D20’s visit with this professor, lol.)
So, perhaps there is something amiss that can be corrected for this midterm? Can’t hurt to try set up a time to discuss – even if it’s just to get some suggestions for future exams. (In addition to asking about extra credit).
@amsunshine Thanks - D21’s email this morning asked about the midterm, extra credit opportunities, and stressed that she wanted to learn how to best improve her performance in his class. Once she gets a response, we’ll take it from there. Online office hours would be the next step, and then contacting the dual credit liaison would be next. This is her fourth English class with this college, one of her LORs is from a different English professor at the same college, and she is a published author. Her midterm was 100% write-ins. So if she does not understand what exactly he is looking for then she deserves the opportunity to know, for she clearly can do the work.
Ds school still ranks, and clearly notified all seniors that ranks were going to be adjusted October 12 when the summer school grades were finalized in the system and students also had the final deadline to change their 2018-19 final grades from a letter grade into P/F, or vice versa. Kids had to make a choice about how to receive end of year grades back in June, but were allowed to think about it more over the summer and could make changes before October. My kids rank did not change, but most of her friends went up or down a few spots. This info was emailed multiple times, so all kids were aware things could change from the rank they saw at the start of the school year.
My son just got his UTD acceptance is now going to submit his app for the DMHP Honors Program in the Jindal School of Management.
I am amused that S21 was so anti UTD this time last year (too close to home, too many family members and community friends there, too Asian (we’re IndoPak) and now all of sudden he’s like “well it’s actually not that bad”
Nah. The interviewer reached out this morning, and had plenty of free afternoons. She’s done a few recruiting calls and tours, so she will be fine. It was just something she wasn’t prepared for and it came out of nowhere.
@Momof3B That’s how S21 was feeling about TAMU last yr. He wasn’t even going to apply until a friend convinced him to and now he says he can see himself there.
The UGA Admission account tweeted it today and it’s also on their blog. Because of the number of EA app they received, they are announcing admissions decisions but waiting until early Dec (date uncertain per the blog) on honors and scholarship announcements.
Sounds like your D did the right thing by reaching out to the prof. Once they get back to her, she can proceed from there. She should definitely be taking advantage of office hours too.
I know that it’s a stressful time, but there is nothing wrong with getting a B…students who get Bs are clearly able to do the work as well.
I would encourage you to let your D handle this and work through it in order to continue to prepare her for college, and the subjectively graded humanities classes that are likely in her future.
Just my 2 cents, as I feel the stress coming from these couple of posts.
The TAMU wait is killing us lol. I’m hoping he’ll hear something by Thanksgiving…from the forum here it seems like review admits are getting acceptances 4-6 weeks
after applying.
Thanks, and I agree there is nothing wrong with a B. It would be her first and probably only B during her high school years, so it would be fine in terms of her GPA etc. It is a C I am worried about. The final is weighted so heavily - and if she does not understand why she received a B for the midterm, then it is conceivable she will make the same kinds of mistakes on the final and get a high C or something. Which would tank her overall grade, and during first semester senior year, which is still so very important for her college applications. So yes, the stress is high. The professor has not yet responded. Hopefully he will, and it will be a response she can work with (meaning, have real feedback so she can know what he wants in terms of responses, etc.).
