Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

Marist extended their application deadline til Dec 1.
Wonder if applications are down?

Itā€™s a trend.

@homerdog I just watched a Furman virtual event on Politics and International Affairs - very impressed by the students and alumni on the panel and by the opportunities offered by Furman.

@tellis6653 Maybe some Karma. Today my D21 got admitted to UDEL nursing. She also got admitted to Saint Louis University today. Happy child for todayā€¦

Marist is trying to convince my 2020 son to transfer. He and I received emails over the past few weeks, reminding us of his acceptance and that he could transfer for 2nd semester. Monday, he received a generous FinAid offer in the mail at home. Tuesday, I received a call from an AO reminding us of the deadline at the end of this week. When I mentioned heā€™d probably stay at his current school, she extended the deadline by another week.

Itā€™s funny because if Marist has accepted him quicker back in January and offered enough FinAid, he might very well be there already. Son appreciates the interest from Marist, but now that heā€™s at his current school and loving it so much, thereā€™s probably no way heā€™ll transfer to Marist at this point.

@burghdad Congrats to your daughter! Exciting news!!

@Momof3B How did it go for you poll worker? Mine did that, too. Swamped first few hours, light thereafter. He was pleased to be located at a site with a D-heavy population and happy to see the large turnout. And the only ā€œuglinessā€ was a near fist fight between two voters over masking. Masks were ā€œhighly encouraged,ā€ but the our local judicial system ruled that requiring masks was voter suppression.

It went really well. Our county (weā€™re about 20 miles north of Dallas) shattered all records with early voting turnout so the precinct he was working at only had about 200 people come through all day, 95% of that precinct had already cast ballots during the 3 weeks of early voting. He said it was pretty quiet day and didnā€™t hear or see anything crazy lol.

Thatā€™s pretty indicative of how all of DFW wentā€¦just want to add how proud I am of Texas this election cycle. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would see the day where Texas became a battleground state! We may even flip it in 2024.

@Momof3B Iā€™m not at Texan, but Iā€™m proud with the direction it is taking, too! We live in SC, unfortunatelyā€¦

@burghdad Congratulations!

When did your daughter get her UDel app in? Still waiting here.

Thatā€™s great! We know some happy kids at SLU. What else is she waiting on? Have you visited Alabama yet?

@JESmom my daughter also got into nursing at UDel yesterday. She applied on 10/20.

Congrats to her!

Looks like my sonā€™s app was complete on 10/26 so hopefully heā€™ll hear in the next week (he applied the College of Arts & Sciences, applied math major)

Congratulations @burghdad and @srwcmw!!

Hi fellow parents,

Iā€™m envious of all of you who have children with so many submitted applications! I will breathe a huge sigh of relief once my Dā€™s applications are all submitted. I have a couple of quick questions:

  1. Is a copy of D's submitted ED application saved on the common app? She said she downloaded a copy to her computer but now she can't find it. Not critically important but just curious.
  2. Does anyone know if ED applications are up or down this year? I would have assumed down, but it seems like everyone in D's class is applying ED. Again, just curious.

Is anyone else seriously stressed out right now?

My S got a lot of extension notices on ED deadlines just in case he accidentally missed it, or you know because itā€™s 2020, etc. I would speculate that ED numbers at the tippy top schools are still strong, but maybe below T35-40 or so some were definitely pushing out the deadline and seeming a bit desperate.

@GoldPenn Very stressed out here, for so many reasons! D21 made the decision last night to go fully online next semester (11:59pm was the deadline). Her in person schedule was laughable as 3 out of 4 classes canā€™t function during Covid. So she leaped into the unknown with her schedule. She did check with the AP Stat teacher to make sure there was a section being taught virtually. Our county has a tentative plan to start rotating 3 groups starting in the spring semester, but that depends on how the metrics goā€¦ Our pre-K -2 started last week in 3 groups, 1 per week, we had a couple of cases reported, but they obviously werenā€™t from going to school.

D still has a few applications to submit, but between time change and election stress, Iā€™m not pushing.

@jeneric My kid has been entirely online since school began in August. It has been going much better than we hoped. I think the teachers learned a lot since the emergency transition last spring. I think it helps being a senior in that she knew at least some of her classmates. My impression is that a lot of learning happened and if anything, expectations are higher than they ordinarily would be. I know this is highly variable but hopefully your childā€™s experience will be similar.

Election stress has also ground the college app process to a halt in this house too.

@mamaedefamilia ā€“ Amazingly, I feel the same way about online school for my S this Fall. He is learning a lot, is working hard, but is not as stressed as I remember my D18 being her Senior year b/c his overall time in online school is a lot less than face-to-face. Just feels more efficient.

Heā€™s very involved in two online clubs ā€“ one of which he co-founded this year and itā€™s taking off. Some of his other ECs are still on hold b/c of COVID, so I think itā€™s great that he pivoted to something new.

I know many teens and college students are struggling with mental health, so I donā€™t take the fact that heā€™s doing well for granted, thatā€™s for sure. Hugs to al our kids doing the best they can is these highly unusual times.

Donā€™t know yet what will happen next semester regarding F2F or online or hybrid. The good news is heā€™ll have one less class in the spring so thatā€™ll be nice for him.

@GoldPenn - stressed in our house, too. Pandemic (kids are digital butā€¦both their schools are increasing numbers)ā€¦and election result waiting has me in knots.

And S21 still has a video to turn in for his ED school that is due tomorrow!!! Heā€™s been working on it but I want it done now!!! He told me that he doesnā€™t understand why I stress about his life more than he does (as he then purposely started eating a banana as slow as he possibly could with a big smirk on his face). ???
