I take comfort in knowing I’m not the only mom with a last-minute kid! My D has been telling me to, “just chill,” but I seriously don’t think I can until applications are in.
In a normal year, college admissions and an election would be stress enough, but add the pandemic, online school, a contentious election, and wow, so much stress! I repeatedly visited the CNN county map yesterday to try to determine the outcome of the swing states - I felt kind of obsessed. We had a family member die last week which was really, really hard (we all had to say goodbye via Zoom). And in addition, my DH has developed a serious health issue — so all of this is hitting at once.
My D is doing online school as well. 2/3 of her senior class is online and 1/3 in-person. 5 out of 7 teachers are teaching from home. It’s such a weird year. I should have joined this class of 2021 group sooner. Thanks for chiming in.
Yes, she should be able to go back into the Common App and download all of her submitted applications. We did that. If she goes back to an application already submitted and tries to click on the School Questions as if she is going to make edits, it won’t allow edits and will instead alert her that it’s already been submitted and give her the chance to download it.
@GoldPenn – I’m so sorry about your loss and your husband’s health issue. It’s too much, right now. I hope you can find some respite through self-care.
@GoldPenn So sorry to hear about your loss and your husband’s situation. My heart goes out to you and your family.
I was eating pretty well for 30-40 days. Now it’s milk chocolate and peanut butter Dove in front of CNN while doing bills and emails. Stress snacking returns!
@momandslp ??? the stress snacking! I know exactly what you mean.
Can anyone tell me if most LAC’s recalculate the GPA? My D’s school doesn’t give additional weight for Honors Geometry or Honors Algebra. Also, to get a grade of A is 95% or above at her school which seems kind of high.
I too understand the stress snacking!
Our experience with D19 was that probably 1/3 used the unweighted GPA, but I don’t remember any specifically recategorizing a letter grade…actually, maybe one. Overall, I think they’re taking grades into consideration along with the counselor’s assessment of the rigor of the courses taken. But, that’s just our experience and guess.
@Aguadecoco – I’m the same – when I get anxious I can’t eat much. And I can tell my pulse goes up. Weird, huh?
@GoldPenn – Colleges are used to seeing very different transcripts and grading scales. They all have ways to make them more apples to apples comparisons.
Wednesday morning I was kind of useless and doomscrolling, but then I decided to binge the Queen’s Gambit on Netflix and it was great and got my mind off the election, etc. I heard about that show from multiple people and I don’t normally watch much television but it helped. S has essay work due 11/15 and now he has two big tests early next week. :0
@GoldPenn 95 is really high. Ours is 93 for GPA and 90 for honor roll. Most schools in our county are 90+. We asked some colleges and some consider a 90+ an A. This made for a different GPA for some schools.
@Zinnia203 You don’t know how lucky you are that your child is so independent with the college apps. I have been 100% hands off regarding schoolwork since each of mine was in 3rd grade. That’s when they got their first textbook, and I went through the first chapter with each, and taught them how to study.
Fast forward to college apps, and even my most headstrong child suddenly wants me to review, though that child may also get mad at my comments!
I’d love it if they were responsible enough and felt confident enough to send them in themselves. Even giving me more notice for a review would be nice!
I don’t know very much, this is my first go around. But I have been hearing that EA and ED applications are both up this year. I am not surprised about EA but more so about ED, being that it’s binding and visits have been so limited.
@homerdog have a trip to Saint Louis and Alabama next Monday and Tuesday.
Leaving Sunday and flying to St. Louis. Have a 1 one hour outdoor only walking tour with just my daughter and I and one student. Everyone masked and temp. Check. We then fly to Birmingham and drive to Tuscaloosa. On Tuesday at 8:00 we have a 3 hour program at the Nursing school as part of something called “university Days”. Masked and socially distanced. Then we are going to just walk around that campus our selves.
I planned all of this at the beginning of September and really didn’t make a final decision to go until about 2 weeks ago. there are 6 flights involved but I used miles and got first class seats to try to limit being shoulder to shoulder with strangers. I am renting a car at both places again to avoid Uber or taxis. I have been checking each school covid dashboard and they are doing very good recently. I also bought a batch of KN95 masks for us to use on the trip.
I just felt like we needed to see these two schools in order for D21 to be able to make a more informed decision down the road. And unfortunately it may not be any better Covid wise going in 2021 before the May 1 deadline.
