Our daughters so similar and stats are almost exactly the same. Mine is all about football, greek life, and school spirit. No interest at ALL in Ivies, etc.
@burghdad thanks for finding those Alabama numbers. They do not match what I pulled up but I think your numbers are right from the university and I got mine from the first website to pop up - College Raptor or something.
Mine is definitely not interested in greek life. Wants BIG to be able to find her tribe and is definitely looking for school spirit. More a basketball fan than a football fan - when we visited UT Austin we went to a Womenās basketball game and she liked that there were a ton of fans there.
@NateandAllisMom @GoldPenn A Williams student posted a āDay in the Life of a Williams First Year: COVID Editionā today on YouTube. Iām not sure if CC will permit this link, but if you search for that title, you should be able to find it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfexejwWiLw
One thing to think about in terms of the EA matches and safeties - not all EAs send acceptances before RD deadlines to other schools. (Iāve been surprised that a friendās son who has several EA applications in wonāt hear from most until Jan/Feb which makes additions to the RD list a bit trickier if those EA apps donāt bring acceptances after all). Even though heās applied EA to, I think, 5 schools, heāll likely be deferred at one and not have heard from any of the others before RD deadlines, so there may be no bird-in-the-hand.
Since my son also applied EA to Wheaton, I know that their typical notification isnāt until Jan 14/15. (which is likely at or after the RD deadline for many schools). So I just checked Rhodes and see that they say the same - notification by Jan 15. Iām just mentioning this because I think we often count on an EA acceptance or 2 to assure us that there will be at least 1 or 2 options even if all the RD results end up as rejections. So I wanted to give you a heads up in regards to Wheaton and Rhodes. I hope your D gets into Middlebury, and it becomes a non-issue!
@GoldPenn - thanks for that information. S21 applied to both Midd and Amherst RD ā so it will be a while before he hears.
@homerdog. One interesting thing is that as recent at 2011 they were 50/50 IS/OOS. So they really have made a concerted effort to bring in OOS students especially high state kids with the great merit money. Also in my research I saw an article from the Chicago Tribune from 2018 about how so many top students from Illinois were going to Alabama. If you havenāt seen it and were interested you should be able to find it with a simple google search.
@mm5678 with your daughterās outstanding stats I would put UMASS in the safety list.
@GoldPenn thanks for the helpful recap on some very practical factors to consider with these SLACs.
D was contacted today for the alumni interview at her ED school. Itās the last piece of the puzzle before itās out of her hands. I hope she connects with her interviewer and feels good about it after.
What was it you said about āthat niggling fearā?? ?
thanks @burghdad . Some of that reflect financial safeties as well as admission. Financially sheād have to get some merit to make it comparable to some of the safeties (NMF makes those automatic full tuition if not full ride). And in that regard, Mount Holyoke and USF (CA) are also reach-y.
@mm5678 gotcha
Are yall in- state in TX?
There are several Texans on this thread, including me! I grew up in MA and still have family there though so thatās why there are MA schools on the list and not other states.
Thank you! I have mentioned Clemson, Mines and WPI to him as schools he might be interested in. I may need to gently suggest again. Some of his other schools are RPI, Virginia Tech, UConn, U of Maryland and Purdue.
Other details, he has a 4.0 UW, 1500 SAT, will have taken 10 AP classes by senior year and has gotten 4s and 5s on the ones heās taken so far (English Lang, Chem, Physics 1 & 2, Calc BC). Heās a math/science kid who loves physics. He wants a school with big school spirit, research opportunities, possible Greek life (but not a must have). He likes the idea of a closed campus with lots of green quads, but with the ability to walk into town.
Thanks for the suggestion, and congrats on the acceptance! I will have S21 check out Pitt. It seems to check a few of his boxes and would be nice to have an admission in hand!
In surprising news, Tulane announced they are releasing ED admissions decisions on Nov 18 (next wednesday at 3:30 CT), posted on Tulane admissions twitter account. Wow.
@Mwfan1921 - Does Tulane usually release ED results in December? Next week seems really early. (Iām jealous of those finding out results in a few days!!)
^Thatās interesting. If they would move up their EA decision announcements to December, it seems to me theyād get more EA apps (from applicants hoping to know before RD deadlines).
Yes, Tulane ED decisions usually come out in mid-December, and that date is still on their website. I agree with EA decision timing tooā¦so much better if itās before EDII/RD deadlines. Maybe because they are done with ED, they will move up EA notification. We shall see!
wow is right. Whatās the point of that? Makes me think they must not have had many ED apps and they were done early?
Iām dying to know all the reasons too.
The deadline for EDI apps was Nov 1, and even if they started reading earlier than that, the bulk of applications probably came in near or on the deadline. Thatās a 17 day turnaround. Crazy.
Tulane has always posted ED before Thanksgiving. I wish the others would follow suit!
