Just looked at ED decisions were posted Nov 20 last year. I wonder why on the website they give a Dec 15 notification date?
I wonder what Tulaneās ED acceptance rate is. They just love their demonstrated interest. Maybe they just read quickly and take a whole lot of kids!
Iām so glad that UGAās EA decisions are coming through next Friday. Even without knowing honors or scholarships, it will be nice to know a decision with time to add some safety/matches. I know itās been said before but I just donāt see why other schools donāt push EA notification dates earlier - Jan and Feb is just so late.
Looks like Tulane released EA around December 19th last year. I wonder whether they plan to do so again, even though the website says Jan - does it always say Jan? Do they not realize it would be helpful for applicants to know that prior to the EA deadlineā¦
Boulder EA is so late - by February 1st! We have two big targets and one safety saying they will release mid to late December. Deferrals at the targets would be disappointing, especially with Sās AP Calc battle.
Iām a huge fan of one early rolling school. Even if itās not a perfect fit, it does help the feeling of will I get in anywhere. My S21s list is very conservative - he already has 3 acceptances and likely letters for 2/3 left outstanding. But my D20ās list was super reachy. It didnāt prevent the insanity of fall stress, but it did help that she was in at a rolling school in August. And I HATE EA schools that release after RD apps are due. Itās hard enough for these kids, they did the work early, give them an answer to TRY and cut down on the stress and essays required for the final RD push.
Virginia Techās EA decisions last year came out in early March ā just two weeks before RD!!! They want everyone to apply EA, according to the info session we went to. Basically EA is RD for them, and RD for them should be called āLate Decision.ā (This is just me talking, of course.)
Theyāve also had weird admissions cycles. Two years ago they way over admitted and the first year class was too big. Last year, according to the CC thread, there were all sorts of high stats kids WL or denied, while kids with lower stats got in. This was mostly in engineering where they get a lot of OOS applicants. I mean I know CC is only a small small sample, but it just seemed like a lot of head scratching decisions.
So Iām really not sure what to make of VT ā which is not good b/c itās still near the top of the list for my S!
@AlmostThere2018 Virginia Tech is near the top of my Sās list too! Its one of the few schools that he was able to visit in person and he absolutely loved it. But as an OOS engineering applicant, Iām not sure what his actual chances are. I remember that thread last year with high stat kids who were rejected and it just didnāt seem to make any sense.
@Darcy123 I totally agree with loving Rolling Admissions. D21 accidently applied rolling for one of her match schools instead of EA but was just notified today of her Acceptance. YAY! First acceptance, now for Dec 11th to get here to see about ED. It does feel good to know someone wants you. Now for her to get our state school applications. I wish the UCs/CSUs had an EOY deadline versus the small window. Oh well, Iām sure itās due to the vast number of applicants.
I really hope we didnāt make a mistake by not having our son apply to Temple or Pitt as a safety. Weāre in state, heās got a 3.7 GPA with 8 APs so far, all 4s and 5s, and is taking 3 more APs this year. A 35 cumulative on the ACT; 34 in one sitting. He works 2 jobs, is on class council, involved in plays at school, and I think his essay is very compelling from what Iāve heard (though he wonāt let me read it, only my wife knows the subject matterā¦heās reluctant to tell me). He worked with an admissions counselor over the summer to nail down the essay. However he wants a small school and doesnāt want the city so he ruled out both Pitt and Temple early. Penn State is too big, too, and in his mind itās too popular at his HS.
I guess Iām just stressed about affordability. Heās gotten into 2 PSAC schools as emergency backups (that he has no desire to go to) but with the poor funding of our PA state schools there is little merit aid available so I suspect weāll be at close to list price. Kutztown has offered a $2000 scholarship with his admission packet. Yay?
I donāt trust the EFCs for the private schools on his list as theyāve varied from $9,500 at Wooster to $29,000 at Oberlin. $9500 would be fantastic, but I just donāt see how it can be that cheap. I think his admissions chances will be killed since weāre not full pay and only seeking merit.
It looks like weāre going to end up applying at way too many schools (19!) just to see what sticks. Anyone else really stressed out?
@flyawayx2 ā yes, my S is an OOS engineering applicant too. Weāre not too far away (in the scheme of things) so we have a lot of engineering kids from my Sās HS who apply and, according to Naviance, my S should be accepted, but after last yearās outcomes, I certainly wonāt count on it.
He really loved it when he visited too!
Good luck to both our boys!
@mm5678
I agree, itās so interesting to observe the needs and desires of different students. Our friends have two daughters, one is the classic overachiever and sheās at a T20. The other is graduating this year and is looking for colleges that offer apparel design and that have a school equestrian team. Our friends find their D21s college search to be a refreshing change from D19s more competitive and stress-inducing search.
@AlmostThere2018
Thanks so much for sharing how you defined safeties. I like the very specific criteria versus a more subjective approach which leaves me wondering if weāre on the right track. I do love how researching course offerings offers so much clarity. The American Studies major is entirely different at Middlebury than it is at Hamilton or Wellesley. Oh, and I appreciate the reminder to have D21 register for online sessions!
@Solstice155
Good luck to your D on her alumni interview! Iād love to hear about it as my D hasnāt done any interviews yet. Does anyone have a resource or tips on preparing for an interview? I know she should just be herself, but I also think it reduces anxiety to feel a bit prepared.
@carlson2 and @19and21
Best of luck to your sons on ED Amherst and RD Amherst/Middlebury!
@homerdog
I had exactly the same thought: It would be amazing if D21 gets into Middlebury and weād both do a happy dance to have this finished. On the other hand, it would leave me wondering where she might have been admitted or denied! As she was deciding where to ED, I thought she would choose ED Amherst and ED2 Middlebury and when I mentioned it, she said in dismay, āBut if I got into Amherst, that would mean no Middlebury!ā ?
@gotham_mom
Thank you for the encouraging message re your D with similar stats. I would be thrilled if things turn out as well for my daughter as they did yours. Itās reassuring to hear stories like this because itās a great reminder that things will turn out in the end. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!
@nichols51
I appreciate the info about EA acceptance dates. I noticed the same thing and it struck me as a bit odd. I have to admit, we didnāt spend as much time on the EA safety/matches and now Iāve learned that Rhodes is in a high-crime city. It makes me want to withdraw the application.
@sccaflagger74 What about Bloomsburg? My older son is about to graduate from there. He had lower stats then your son and received a 5000.00 a year scholarship. Pretty good for a state school. He was also rewarded full tuition at West Chester although he turned it down because he like the smaller size campus at Bloomsburg.
I graduated from Bloom and we drive through yearly on the way to Knoebels so itās out. He has no interest since I went there. No interest in West Chester either since so many from his high school go there (weāre only 15 minutes from campus). I wish I had some insight into how his brain works but unfortunately I donāt!
@sccaflagger74 not sure how far your son is willing to travel but have you looked at any of the Midwestern LACās and universities. Miami of Ohio, Dayton both give big merit. So do DePauw, Lawrence, Beloit, Knox, Hope and Kalamazoo.
@mm5678 we are Texas too. I grew up here but went to UMASS to play basketball. Kids were born there but raised here, and both going back to the NE( or hope to!) Soph at Bowdoin and my son 21 looking at all schools there. He was an auto admit at UT but too big. Great list yall have.
@GoldPenn First, isnāt Middās ED acceptance rate like 55%? If my recollectionās right, looks like sheāll probably get in! Second, no, I donāt worry about them not getting in anywhere, because they are already accepted to our state flagship (where they donāt want to go) and I canāt imagine them not getting into Boulder, which would be fine! Now, if youāre talking about being worried they wonāt get into their ātopā choice school, Iām not worried there either. Honestly, it will save us $ for grad school. I think the way to look at this is while your child may have strong preferences, sheāll be fine anywhere. And, from your very balanced list, thereās no way she gets rejected from every school you listed, just no way! The other personās list was ridiculous, but he still got into 2 schools! The only time Iāve seen someone get rejected everywhere is when they only had reached on their list, which is just plain dumb.
And, Iād add that we did a merit hunt for our older S, so almost all of the schools to which he applied were āsafetiesā (we are in a āgeographically diverseā area and he wanted a LAC, which made otherwise targets/reaches more like safeties). Not a single kid at his school had heard of his top 2 choices. But, now that he went to one of them, more kids from his school are applying. And, though some of his friends attended āname brandā schools, theyāre all still friends. It becomes a non-issue. Iām sure it stings when parents think their kid ādeservesā a T20 school and doesnāt get in, but thatās not you or your Dās list.
@evergreen5 I have a feeling that with TO the top schools are going to see an increase in apps.
