Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

I wonder if they’ll be under a little PR pressure to prove that TO was not a disadvantage, to the extent they divulge any admission stats. If they give any interviews, someone is going to ask what portion applied TO and what portion of those were admitted vs score submitters.

Also wonder if we will be able to compare app increases/decreases to perhaps Gtown, which is not-really-TO, or will they see a similar increase in early apps, especially being nonbinding.

I just noticed in the Common App that Santa Clara had extended its EA/ED1 deadline to Nov 10th. Though, I don’t see any indication of that on their website or social media. Could they be short on apps? Typical numbers appear to be applying from our high school, per Naviance.

He’s looking at no more than about 8 hours from home. He had Miami on his list early, but decided it was too big. I’ve also had him look at all the other Ohio publics since most offer nice merit and most would come in cheaper than a PA state school, but again, all too big.

His list:
Hamilton
Vassar
Connecticut College
Williams
Colgate
Kenyon
Dickinson
Oberlin
Lafayette
Muhlenberg
Wooster
Clark

We are also having him apply at these schools as additional safeties since I think his list is light on safeties and also light on schools that are relatively close so this is a mix. Plus these are all free apps anyway:
Washington & Jefferson
Ursinus
Juniata
Allegheny
Washington College

Plus the 2 PA state schools he’s gotten into. Next step there is honors college applications.

Tried to interest him in Washington and Lee since it looks like they offer some very nice aid to a good portion of students, but it felt too conservative to him.

I haven’t heard anything about SCU’s app volume for class of 2025, but for class of 2024 they were accepting students literally up until the day classes started in September.

I

This makes me wonder if schools that had no one on campus this fall are going to struggle with getting apps. Lots of CA schools in that category.

Ack. Not sure why I have Almostthere’s quote there. Meant to just copy quote about SCU. ^^^^^

SCU had an 11/1 EA deadline, but they did allow an applicant to change their application for up to 1-week after the 11/1 deadline, which was a Sunday (11/8)

D21 submitted her SCU EA app test optional by the 11/1 deadline, but she had a school SAT test day on 10/14 and we were waiting for her score. The score was released on 11/4 and she revised her app to include the score, prior to the extended deadline per the SCU website.

So, maybe SCU saw some local apps being revised after the 11/1 deadline and decided to quietly call 11/10 their new EA deadline? ?

@havenoidea Thanks for the encouraging words! Here’s one post from Middlebury ED last year. There are more like it. Holistic admissions = ?‍♀️.

“I just got rejected from middlebury college ed which is shocking. I have a 4.2 gpa and a 35 composite on my act. I have plenty of community service and extra curriculars. I’ve taken 8 AP classes. 5 this year. I have straight A’s first quarter of my senior year. My courses this year: AP BC calculus, AP English, AP economics, AP statistics, AP physics 2. Previous APS: AP physics 1, AP environmental science, APUSH. If anyone else got rejected or accepted early decision to middlebury for the class of 2024 please reach out and answer I’m so curious!”

Remind us. Did your D show interest at Midd? Visit or talk to an admissions officer? Any history with your high school? Obviously ED is the ultimate interest but I’m sure they still need to see fit. We do know one student who transferred out of Midd. Too cold. Too remote. Transferred to Vanderbilt. I think Midd likes to feel like the student gets what it’s like to go to school there. Plus, remember the 55 percent includes athletes and Questbridge.

Common App Recommender question: S21 applied to his super reach/dream school and just got done with his UC, so going back and applying to his other colleges on the Common App. USC is his second school within the Common App platform. The nice thing is, I saw that the counselor uploads for the first college transferred over to USC. However, he had 3 teachers write his LORs and on the USC page, they picked only two. Is there a way to go in and select 3rd teacher who wrote his LOR? They included his AP English and AP Bio teacher but I think he would prefer his AP Calc teacher over his AP Bio teacher write-up. Not sure how to do this other than request it again? Thanks!!

You can "assign"the teachers to the specific school when in their application . If the school allows a third you can add 3 or you can remove the one you dont want and assign. You have to assign all your recommenders at each school where you apply.

If your counselor uploads the recs then you need to contact her to ask for any changes. We don’t get to choose which recommenders for which apps on the CA. At the beginning of the year, we fill out a spreadsheet with all of the colleges on CA and let the GC know how many recs needs to be sent. If it’s two, she will send both. If it’s one, we let her know which one to send. You won’t be able to get the recs already sent taken off of the app but, if your GC is in charge of this like ours, you can call her and have her add the third rec,

@MommaLue – agree you should check with your GC. We select our teacher LORs through Naviance (not Common App) and then the GC’s office sends them to the colleges. But b/c Naviance and Common App are linked we can see they’ve been sent.

Point being, I don’t think there’s a single method for this – process varies!

Middlebury is actually not a QB partner, but they are a Posse partner. They take 30 Posse students every year, all ED. Add to that 60-75 recruited athletes, some other preferred students from things like Discover Middlebury fly-in program, and the admit rate for unhooked students is not as high as you think. Still higher in ED than RD though.

@homerdog seems odd you cant choose which to assign when you have to submit the common app yourself? Is this because of some connection with Naviance ( which we dont have anymore but a product called scoir)? The teachers for mine uploaded themselves to common app and he has to still “assign” them to each school. If he had 3 and they only accepted 2 you pick which two. Public school in TX with minimal counseling help so Id not like for them to be in control

Our GC uploads the teacher recommendations through Naviance. We have no way to upload recommendations ourselves.

We don’t have Naviance so teachers upload the recs to the common app themselves. S21 chooses the recs for each school he applies to on the common app.

Thank you. Our teachers and GC upload directly and we don’t use Naviance. He would use among the 3 he submitted but I was paranoid and didn’t want to remove one to add the other and mess it up. He will look into this today.

Question for CALIFORNIA parents with kids applying to UC.

I know UC is test blind but some of their search pages say that they can use SAT/ACT for class placement. I didn’t think that is a thing. Quite frankly, I would rather submit the scores and not deal with having to react on case a judge make any changes to ruling in the upcoming months. A 36 ACT is a terrible thing to waste!

Do we have to send test scores to every UC school or just one will get to all? My son had his sent to UCLA when he first signed up with the 4 options they gave him. Thanks!

Ugh. We’ve just realized we have another problem as a result of D21’s GC. Although the GC had given D21 her gpa and class rank, she had not yet sent her a copy of her unofficial transcript until last week. I was just looking over it and the GC entered one of D21’s dual enrollment classes from last year incorrectly. Instead of entering a Java programming class, she entered a “Personal Finance” class for some reason?!?. So, the GPA is the same – she still entered an A in the class, but for the wrong class. :frowning:

D21 is applying to be a CS major and most of her apps are in (1 more to go), and the transcripts have already been sent. It takes forever for the high school to get changes made to the transcripts due to errors as they go through the district, which is super slow. I ordered transcripts directly from the community college to be sent to her schools just now, but they are saying that it will take 10-15 business days to process transcript orders because of covid.

A couple of schools will have decisions coming out in mid December and they make scholarship decisions around then, as well. CS is such a super competitive major, we would really like her transcripts to accurately reflect her programming coursework before any of these decisions are made. It doesn’t look like schools will receive her correct transcripts on time.

My question is: would it be worthwhile/not too annoying for D21 to contact her admissions counselors and explain the situation, as well as send an unofficial transcript? We do have a pdf copy of her unofficial transcript.
