Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

@AlmostThere2018 thanks for sharing.

Very interesting that Rice is reporting an increase in apps from URM, yet the overall % of URM applying this yr is lower than last yr at this time.

momtogkc - how sweet of Dā€™s friends. Congrats on USF!

Yikes! Can anyone help?

D21 found her interview request buried in her spam today. She has to interview tomorrow or Friday to meet the deadline. Aside from the usual, why she wants to attend the school, what sheā€™s interested in studying, and what she will contribute to the campus, can anyone fill me in on some of the more common interview questions she might expect?

I knowā€¦we should have prepared sooner and Iā€™m kicking myself! Ugh.

I would make sure to have solid questions to ask. D21 felt like she needed four or five good questions that showed her interest and her knowledge about specific things on campus. Depending on the school, your D could get questions about anything but I think most schools just want to have a conversation. Is this with someone from admissions or an alumni interview?

D was asked about books she reads, her favorite class, least favorite class. She was asked about a project she worked on with others that she was proud of. She was asked to go into detail about one of her extracurriculars.

Good luck!!

S21 was asked about what he is passionate about outside of school, what he hopes to accomplish with a degree from that school, asked about his interest in books, movies, music.

S was prepared with at least 3 questions since every interviewer asked if he had any questions or where there any topics he wanted to discuss that they didnā€™t cover.

All 3 of his interviews were with alumni that also happen to work at the school.

Good luck to your D.

I think the mismatch is that URMs not applying to colleges (or even filling out FAFSA) are not those aiming for top schools. Itā€™s kids who in a normal year would be going to a broad access 4-year or community college. This is terrible for them, their families, and the whole country. Itā€™s a slow mo train wreck for higher ed and our future workforce.

At the other end of the spectrum, for selective schools,I think if colleges find that going TO increases their ability to attract and admit more qualified URMs, then I think TO truly will be here to stay, post COVID.

Dr. Graves from UGA just tweeted that applicant Avg GPA for test optional: 3.81 and Avg for submitting was 3.99.

He said "I am guessing that possibly for 2020-2021, ā€œtest optionalā€ means ā€œI have no access/no way of taking these @#@$% tests.ā€

@AlmostThere2018 Congrats on Pitt!

Good to see he got in with the SAT close to 50%. We are still wondering if we did the right thing on a few schools where we went TO - D was in the mid 50% but on the lower end. We probably have a week or two to send them in if we want to but Iā€™m still nervous that the scores were too low.

@GoldPenn A friend of Dā€™s had an interview this week with the question, ā€œIf we sat at a table with your friends how would they describe you?ā€ She said the other questions were the basic why do you want to go here and things like that. My D did not have any interviews so sorry Iā€™m not much help other than that!

Congrats, @drrrrm ! One of Dā€™s friends just got in too! So exciting .

@momtogkc ā€“ Thank you!!

Actually, I mistyped earlier - his score was over 50th percentile at Pitt, but not 75th.

I should prolly add that he also has 4.0 UW GPA with 10 APs at a top public HS in our state. Good but not amazing ECs. Itā€™s not all about the scores, as every AO reminds us!

He submitted scores to most his colleges b/c we heard that for engineering theyā€™d still rather have them. But it was a tough decision for sure b/c we think in a regular year his ACT would have been better.

For most of his schools, I expect his score will not help him, and I just hope it doesnā€™t hurt him. He has also applied to one big reach TO.

S21 got some swag in the mail today from UTDā€™s Jindal School of Managementā€¦a lanyard, pen and stickersā€¦also an invitation to apply to the Business Honors program.

Why am I getting the feeling that if TAMU doesnā€™t come through, UTD may be where he lands lol

Cā€™mon A&M, hurry up!!! Sheesh, the last time I felt this anxious waiting for a yes/positive was when we were going through IVF to conceive S21!! Gaahhhhhh!

Momof3B - Iā€™m an IVF vet too! Conceived DD21 and DS23 with IVF, DS25 was a happy bonus!! Good luck to S21!!!

Yay fellow mom of multiples!! i had s21 & s23 twins through IVF also! With the twins we joke that we bought one and got one free lol

Congrats!

@MorseLewis I am thinking in the end, they run out kids gpa and scores thru their fancy algorithm and if no UC has been assigned to the and they are indeed top 9%, everyone gets admission to UC Merced

We got an email from S21 ED college indicating missing info. The Midyear school report and transcript and the Midyear transcript. Those due in Feb. They also wanted first term grades/senior progress. They did say they were flexible with pandemic scheduling so could be turned in Nov/Dec but then said 11/24.

We are on 3x4 schedule so he does have the transcript thru the first quarter for three classes. Iā€™m going to ask the counselor since them being flexible but the 11/24 threw me off.

Iā€™m surprised by the original Nov/Dec flexibility. Most ED decisions are out before 12/25 at the latest so youā€™d think they would actually need the senior grades before ā€œDecā€ in order to consider them!

Thatā€™s funny because my D21 got an email that she was missing an item from her #1 choice yesterday as well. Sent her into a complete meltdown. She interpreted it that she wonā€™t be considered since deadline passed to apply ED? I talked her through it and we figured it out. They had received her ED contract but apparently have a separate one on their side that needed to be signed. We quickly completed it and emailed it back. I had never seen that before but within an hour the AO sent her back an email thanking her for her quick response and letting her know her application was officially under review.

The stress is definitely ramping up again. A couple of friends got in to their ED schools this week and I see my girls confidence waning!

Donā€™t want to give you false hope but that sounds like it could be good news if they wanted to make sure the ED letter was signed.

We also received a letter from D21 ED college. Got the first term grades submitted but apparently the counselor needs to sign off on ED. Have no idea why the HS counselor needs to approve an ED app!
