Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

@Tribegiant - I believe it’s to make sure that the student is aware that ED is a binding commitment, and to be used only for one school. (Believe it or not, some aren’t aware or feign being aware so I believe that is why that mandate is in place.)

D21 ED’d and I signed as well as her GC.

I saw Tulane ED was out yesterday.

S21 got his acceptance to Texas Tech last night…I guess we need to figure out a trek up to Lubbock now so he can actually see the campus lol

All of the gloom and doom on Florida applications seemed to be premature. It will be interesting to see the test score data that comes out given that they were required.

That’s fast! Tulane ED Deadline was Nov 1. Their website says decisions by Dec 15. I wonder what to make of that.

@burghdad - Tulane is releasing ED in batches up until Dec 15th. Not sure if this is new or if they have done it in past years. Seems even more stressful!

I asked our school counselor about D ED choice requesting 1st Quarter grades (because she had all A’s/Max AP’s are taken so I was hoping it would look great) but she indicated they do not ask. (sad face) Is it Dec 11th yet? The wait is killing me

@Creaky I got an email today from Tulane saying they are thrilled to announce that ED II is now open “for those that realized Tulane was their first choice after the first ED deadline passed.” Deadline is January 8 and decisions will be given by January 18. Speed readers?
D21 has never shown any interest whatsoever, so not even sure how it ended up in my inbox!

@Solstice155 we got the same email last week. Mine did apply EA and I had heard this so what happened last year as well. Yield protection!

I feel like Tulane acts so insecure and needy. All of their early rounds and the pressure to apply early so that they know up front that you love them. It’s not a good look.

@Momof3B Hope your S21 got his school day SAT score today. My S21 got his and is very happy with his score

He got the score! His EBRW went up but Math went down lol. 2 of
his safety schools where he’s already admitted Superscore so we went ahead and sent this score to those two to give him a boost for merit aid.

His new score isn’t going to change anything for his TAMU app, so for that we keep waiting!

@Momof3B Congrats on Texas Tech!!

I’m wondering if Tulane will announce EA earlier as well. Two years ago when my D19 applied we knew by Christmas but if I remember correctly that was the normal date, it wasn’t a surprise. Doesn’t matter to me who likes Tulane and who doesn’t but if anyone has any questions I will say we love them. Their communications might be over the top now, but as a parent it is nice that they continue that once you have a student there. Lots of emails, updates and webinars full of information.

@momtogkc Here here re: Tulane! My daughter is finishing up her last semester there and I am so proud and yet so sad she will be graduating! For the record: the Tulane parent facebook group is amazingly supportive, the communication from the university is appropriate, frequent and transparent, and the school did a commendable job converting to remote learning in the spring. I would send S21 there in a heartbeat (so many families have multiple kids there) but he wants to be closer to home. Say what you want about Tulane’s marketing, but the school itself is top notch.

I’d love to be corrected if I’m wrong but I’ve heard a good number of students at Tulane can’t get the classes they need and have to take classes at other institutions over the summer fairly often. Any truth to that?

Your D can send a pdf of her Q1 grades to her AO on her own.

@Momof3B OMGosh, exactly same thing happened with my S21, his EBRW went up very well but math reduced by 20 points, and his superscore is very good now. Few of his schools do superscore and so its all good

@homerdog D is only a sophomore so I don’t know if she will get to that point but so far she has not had too much trouble getting in to classes she wants. She was on the waitlist for some but did get in the classes in the end. She is currently number 1 on the list for a class for a class that would fulfill a distribution. There were a ton of options (I think it was the Global Perspectives distribution), she just liked this class and time slot so decided to get on the list. (she does everything possible to not have to wake up for 8am classes!)

I do know that some of the classes are only open to people in that major for the first week or so. D19 decided to double major but hadn’t officially declared it yet by registration this week so she was not able to sign up for a certain class. She emailed her advisor to ask how to declare it (her first major was the one she put on her application so she was already signed up for that one) and he is doing it with her virtually.

@momandslp may be able to answer you better since her D is a senior. I am sure it has a lot to do with your majors as well - it might be harder in some to get what you need? D19 is planning on majoring in Psychology and Communications, not sure if that changes anything.

@homerdog That was not the experience of my daughter nor any of her roommates, I don’t think. They all came with some AP credits, so I don’t know if that played a factor. My daughter only took one summer class, and that was for convenience. For the record, my daughter is graduating early with a double major (Linguistics and Psychology) and a minor (Spanish) even after being abroad for a semester (fall 2019 in Buenos Aires). I have heard stories about trouble getting classes needed to graduate at the UC schools and UF, but never at Tulane. In fact, they make it pretty easy to double major from what I have heard. Hope that helps!
