Parents of the HS Class of 2024

Where is this feature located on Scoir?

So this is where my stalking skills come in. When you look at the scatter gram for a school and choose only this year, a list comes up under saying how many people are also applying to a list of other schools. Of course it isn’t giving a complete list but it gives a sense of how many kids are applying to that school

You win the stalking award of the day! (Weekend? Application season?) :joy:

my children have taught me well! S21 says he is the best out there, and he has shown on many occaisions that he is right

Does this work on Maia Learning also?

So it seems I can only filter through 2023, which would be last year’s seniors. We don’t have the option of class of 2024 on our Scoir accounts. I assume the data gets uploaded each summer, after admission season is over, since it also includes “enrolling” as one of the data points.

too bad! Our school has 2024 as an option, there are no pointson the scattergram (yet) but there is the list below, let me see if I can upload a picture

We have Naviance, and I see 2024 applicants for some schools, but even our flagship (which is local) that did a decision day in August only shows 2 acceptances, which is definitely not accurate as they accepted many kids that day. Probably a grain of salt thing
but will be interesting to watch over the next few months!

Our school keeps it locked until the summer as well. We don’t have the GPA button. It shows on the graph but our school does not officially report. SCOIR is veery customizable.

Also, schools being applied to and results for many schools need to be manually input. Kids aren’t always great about that.

We use Cialfo switched from Naviance a few years ago. The data is reasonably accurate but not 100%. It relies on data from student input. If a student never updates thier results then the data will be incomplete. I see about 10-20% of applications don’t have results posted.

However, it’s very useful to see where your kid lands in GPA/SAT scattergram. Also, it gives you a good idea if your high school has better connection with a particular college.

Last year, D24’s school had 1/4 kids applied to a particular school near by. Even though it’s listed T60 school, almost 60% of the kids were accepted. So we are considering this school as a safety.

If anyone wants to apply to the University of Alabama, it is free this week (the application fee is waived).

Interesting experience: visiting a college when it’s their parent/family weekend. We did not plan an official tour, but had some free time and swung by to check it out (ok fine, it was intentional on my part lol). Naturally the vibe is probably not typical on such a weekend, but lots of unexpected little activities were open to the public, some department open houses, etc. Easy for a family to blend in, which is helpful for a teen who doesn’t like to draw attention to themselves.

The people- (family-)watching was extra fun from my perspective. (I just attended two of my older kids’ parent weekends in recent weeks, which perhaps is what made this such an interesting exercise for me.)

What a great idea! Too bad we are done with tours. You might want to suggest this the Parents of HS classes 2025 and 26 boards.

I feel like comparing schools is like those episodes of house hunters :joy: If he could take a few things he loves about one and put it at the other school it would be “exactly the right one”. Interesting to see things evolve the more in-depth research he and we do on these schools. I have my own secret mom spreadsheet with pros and cons but I am of course keeping that to myself and he need to make his own decision ultimately.

D sent in her first application yesterday to UNC early action.

Of course right afterwards, we started Googling all the toxic coal ash near campus.

D has a meeting with her college counselor this morning to discuss early apps, and has an interview with one of her likely/match schools over zoom after school. I really wish she had applied to one rolling admissions school to have an early answer, but guess I can wait a few more months. At least one app to a safety she really likes has been submitted!

Maybe I should start a separate thread:

  • supposed to be a “funny” thing:
    – what lie or wrong statement due to ignorance/whatever that you’ve heard/someone told you?

My gf was told by ?someone (in her very wealthy town) that students should NOT apply EA/ED, and only apply RD if you’re chasing merit/financial aid.

Gf’s “average excellent” daughter is applying to T100.
My response to her:

  1. run the NPC: you’re probably NOT getting financial aid (other than loans)

  2. again: run the NPC: even if you’re offered merit, is that enough $ to make COA affordable?
$10K merit off $90K college is still too pricey for me

  3. I thought that it is prudent to apply early, so that colleges don’t run out of scholarship $

I would think that applying EA would increase the likelihood of good merit. I
