I don’t know, but I agree that the SRAR is ridiculous. Schools have the transcript, and if they want all of that information in a different form so they don’t have to analyze the transcript itself, they can use Classes & Grades on the Common App. My son had to fill out both the classes and grades thing and SRAR. They are the same thing! I wish schools would get it together so he only needed to do one of them.
How frightening! I’m so glad she’s ok.
The SRAR is really a head scratcher for me, too. Between having to do it, the difficulty linking it to Rutgers, and the fact that we have to sit on hold for a long time just to try to get to speak with someone at Rutgers…any affinity we might have had for the school (tbh, it was a last-minute add just to have somewhere 100% affordable on the list) is rapidly diminishing.
Since I’m not a college Admissions Officer, this is just my guess.
For colleges that do not use SRAR, the college has to somehow get the info off the transcript and into their college system, to somehow equalize every applicant.
During my job hunt, I found a position for a local college where the only responsibility of this job posting was to download and re-calculate the applicants’ GPA.
With SRAR, all the classes, levels, and grades are all in the systems, ready for easy manipulation and data analysis.
That makes sense, but the Classes & Grades section of the common app does the same thing. It seems like schools should take either of them.
Isn’t the CommonApp Classes & Grades section just for Senior year classes?
Not sure, but isn’t it a PDF version that colleges download from CommonApp? pdf is not an easy format for data manipulation.
The thing with SRAR is that it forces you to enter Senior year grades and will not save till you enter them. What do you do if they are not available yet?
One of the choices for grades for a class is “in progress“ so that is what you choose for senior year classes
The full classes and grades section, or maybe it’s called courses and grades, is exactly like the SRAR. It is on the Common App but is submitted to the college separately from the rest of the application (ie not in the PDF).
My son explored applying to over 40 colleges (don’t worry, he got it down to a manageable number eventually!) and of all of those schools, only one (a school he did eventually decide to apply to) required the courses and grades section to be filled out.
But, then, five of the other schools he applied to required the SRAR! Since he already had to fill out the courses and grades section for that one college, it would have been nice to have been able to use that for the other five colleges that required the SRAR. Or for the common app to not have that section at all and for the other school to be forced to use the SRAR.
Is this what the high school/guidance counselor submits,
something that we don’t see/has access to (doesn’t show up in the pdf preview)?
Because I don’t remember filling out anything except for Senior courses in the CommonApp.
I think that it is school dependent. You aren’t going to see it if your schools don’t require it. Since my son hasn’t applied to any schools that are asking for it, he hasn’t had to do it.
It is also weird because since he submitted that application (MS State) the Courses & Grades section disappeared on his Common App account.
We had to do the SRAR twice. If you are applying to UIUC they send a link to do SRAR and this can’t be used for other colleges. He had to another one for NorthEastern and this one S24 said can be used for other colleges if needed.
Also in regards to when all the supporting docs need to be reached by schools the dates seem to vary From Nov 1st to Nov 15th. I wish they would all follow one rule so we can track easily.
S24 has complete all his ED application supplements and his GC has given them the thumbs up so he’ll be submitting his application tonight. Whew! His final EA application is also nearly done. Just needs to finish revising the essay and that will be good to go as well.
D24 had her interview at her ED school on Friday. Application submitted, so now we wait. Fortunately, she was able to spend the night with a friend on campus and experience the social life - confirmed it is the right choice.
S24 submitted a total of 4 EA applications so far. He is done with his ED application for Brown but we are waiting until 11/1 since it will give him a little more time for the video upload. We will just go with Brown’s website to upload within 7 days of getting portal access.
Our school will send it automatically. Our term ends before thanksgiving.
This weekend, my D24 finished all supplements for her 11/1 ED school. Unfortunately she can’t kick her cold, so she’s at Urgent Care right now, and missing school today. She has asked her counselor for the final go-ahead to submit. I’m concerned she will have missed the window to the window request an interview, since they don’t let you request until application is submitted. But Que sera, sera. I have faith things will work out for the best in the end.
Updating to let you know the counselor submitted all the documents today! I don’t know if he went to her or not. We are both happy that it was done before the deadline and among the craziness of Nov. 1. I take back my prior criticism of the counselor. :). Now we wait…
Just posting to say that if your child is not submitting an Arts Supplement…BE GRATEFUL. This Arts Supplement thing is no joke. Every school has different requirements and there are so many moving parts. It’s making me lose my sanity.
