Parents of the HS Class of 2024

In continued solidarity with the ever-dwindling Last Minuters Club . . . S24 let me know last night he simply didn’t like some of his supplementals (for the REA application due 11/1), and was basically starting those over with new ideas. I in fact like the new ideas, but, tick-tock, right?

And it is not like he has a lot of spare time given other things going on, but we shall see.

I am convinced that S24 is just punking me. Today he is back to his regular ED choice, last EA application is in the final reread stage and he just has an arts supplement essay for one other. Will take a day or two off and more on to the scholarship applications due 11/15. Whee!

Maybe reframe as to why they ended up on the list at all? I think that makes it a bit easier if you think of it that way. Thousands of other schools could have been on the list but they picked “these”. Just a thought.

Deep breaths…

DS2022 definitely had a no-doubt no-wavering #1 (that didn’t offer ED option),
but DD2024 doesn’t really. She likes #1 just a tad better than 2/3/4, etc.
So we’re going to go w/ cost.
Only if she’s not accepted to EA state college will she apply ED2 to a Target/slight Reach ED2 (to help give her an acceptance boost over applying RD).

Sounds awful. I cannot imagine if this had happened to S24. In fact, he was so done when he submitted his apps that he is declining applying for Honors at the schools that have invited him because he is just done. It is a LOT for these kids.

Still over here wondering how on earth D24 will get all of this done in time. I am, however, incredibly grateful that she’s not at home (boarding school kid) with me bcs I am certain our relationship would be on very thin ice if I had to be the one regulating her schedule. None of her 5 EA/ED apps are in, and I have no idea where her art portfolio stands. Less than 48 hours to go, she assures me she is fine, and she is planning to go to the movies with friends tonight to celebrate Halloween.

I am so glad we were done with applications weeks ago. Yesterday we received several emails from the school counselor about an outage (maybe national?) at Naviance. She will be scrambling to get everything uploaded for all of the people cutting it close for 11/1 deadlines.

Can you imagine? It’s stressful enough for the kids to then be hit with something like this totally outside their control. I assume everything will get there and that schools will excuse late submissions, but still.

Still over here dealing with the Rutgers SRAR issue. Took more than two hours yesterday to get an actual person on the phone. Also not a great sign that the automated message in the phone tree says something about “we will not tolerate abusive behavior…” Clearly a signal that there’s lots of frustrated people dealing with what is colloquially known as the “RU Screw.”

If nothing else, it is probably actually good to have this experience now, as it is confirming for us that this would likely not be a great environment for D24. I don’t see her ready to be thrown in to sink or swim in a huge pool like that. I only wish I hadn’t wasted $ on an application and sending test scores to a school that I’m still not entirely certain is ever going to get submitted (untangling the SRAR issue seems difficult) and for a school that it has become apparent would not be the right place for her.

is there any reason why the ED agreement has to be signed more than a few days before the ED deadline? S24’s current choice is a 11/15 deadline and his guidance counselor keeps asking him to sign the agreement in SCOIR now, is she just checking boxes or does it need to be done far ahead of time?

Also having trouble with Rutgers and hoping they are going to extend the deadline as they can’t get their portal to work. I tried the online chat function, and after saying we’re ready to chat with you they said oh, no there are no agents available to chat. :rage:

D24 submitted all of her early apps over the weekend and last night. 3 EA, 1 RD with an 11/1 scholarship deadline and her reach ED. She poured her heart and soul into her ED supplements, and I am so proud of her but it’s now out of her hands. Hopefully all of our kids get their apps submitted without any issues!

They told me they are having an issue with the Community ID and that the deadline for SRAR submission has been extended to 11/6.

If her EA instate is UMass Amherst, be aware that they often don’t give results until mid or late Jan. 2 years ago they had 2 releases in December and then another 2 or 3 in January. But last year they only had 1 in December (and it was just before Christmas) and the rest were in January with a very large number of them at the latest date (something like Jan 20). People were pretty angry.

Good question. We signed ours weeks ago as did S24 but I’m not sure it was required. Seemed like more of a box checking exercise so it didn’t get forgotten.

D23 was accepted to UMASS Amherst EA in the honors college last year not too long after Thanksgiving in the first wave. It was either very late November or early December but definitely not later in December. Think she was the only one from her school accepted in the first wave.

What a relief it must have been to get an acceptance so early!

S24 just texted me that he submitted his ED app. It’s not due until 11/15. I don’t know if I should be happy or worried. I’m like did your college advisor sign off on this, did you attach all your supplementals . . . At his school, parents are encouraged to take a backseat and let the student and advisor run the show. While great for the kids, it’s a little unnerving for the parents, or maybe just me. Fingers crossed, we are one and done.

At 11pm last night D24 was finally ready to submit ED application. It’s been ready since Sunday but it felt scary to send it because now it’s all out of her hands. What helped her finally push the submit button is working on a why essay for another school and realizing how much she would love that school too. ED school is still number 1 but other school is not far behind.

Tomorrow she should get her SAT score for 10/11 sitting. She wasn’t going to wait on it to submit her EA and ED apps-too stressful waiting till actual deadline. Hopefully she will just have to update all her schools with an improved score but if not her score should be fine where she has applied. I’m a bit nervous there was a glitch as the test sitting is not showing up on her college board account. She says some of her friends have the same issue.

Enjoy the backseat! When my D20 was applying, I was barely involved (Mostly because she was a very on top of things (read: anxious, LOL) kid, and also because I was dealing with some heavy family stuff/medical issues for my H that sucked up most of the oxygen in the household, tbh). So, I really had no idea what was involved and how stressful it was.

D24 is a different kid, needs more guidance and while I’m thankful to have the bandwidth to offer it…oy! So many moving parts to try to help her organize. I wish I was in the backseat again
