D24 has had senioritis since 10th grade Seriously, she had a LOT of drama/bullying last year and it was a struggle to get her to go to school some days. This year has been much better, thankfully. That said, last night she mentioned her throat was a little scratchy and I suggested she sleep in today and go in late - she has gym first period, followed by an easy elective, so only really needs to be in by 3rd block for her core courses. Of course, she took me up on that offer immediately. I hope I didnât just start a trend with this again.
We have one pretty close to the end of the school year. Pretty much everybody at the school is on board with the exception of a few strict teachers and a sports requirement if you have a game that day.
I wish they would do an additional one on 11/2.
My S24 stayed home yesterday. He already had his apps in as of the weekend. He just wanted a mental health day. I think apps and sports and school has been A LOT.
I was just happy that D24 did her REA app, but she surprised me last night by finishing five more. She only has three more to do, with no rush.
Now, to tackle her senior chapel speech, which is next week. I donât think sheâs prepared it at all yet - EEK.
Letâs all celebrate with our beverage of choice that weâve made it past the November 1 deadline. On to the next!
Ever feel disappointed when you/your kid get repeated and increasingly desperate-sounding communications from a school you have visited & like and kid is already 100% applying to already?
I know they have a business to run, but sometimes it cheapens them a little in the back of my mindâŠ
I donât mind it when itâs a school C24 hasnât applied to yet, but I do wish their marketing departments would maybe talk to the admissions office. DC24 got an application fee waiver from one school, weeks after theyâd already applied.
It is definitely hard on them! D24 is home on a mental health day today, plus her stomach hurts. I think the stress (of waiting until the last minute?) got to her. She never wants to stay home, and has great grades in all honors & AP classes so itâs fine with me.
S19 and S22 handled all of their stuff on their own as well. Never saw an essay, app, etc. In fact, S22 was accepted to Williams ED before I even knew he had applied! D24 ⊠sheâs a very different animal.
We always have in the past (only one though), but last year administration caught wind of it early and students were told they wouldnât walk at graduation if they didnât come to school that day. I thought that was a little severe (and I work at the school), but it is what it is.
We definitely do mental health days in our house if necessary. I take them off from work for myself, after all. My kids have never abused it. My daughter in particular suffers from GAD and sometimes a quiet day at home is necessary.
One school that S applied to sent him an email asking him to submit quickly AFTER he already submitted his EA application. Then they sent TWO emails asking if he really wants to go test optional. It is a well known school so we were surprised. And after that there is an email almost every day. It makes one wonder.
ALL schools want to attract as many applicants (qualified or not) as they can, to keep their acceptance rate as low as possible. When you start thinking about these stupid numbers games they play, it cheapens all of them, IMO. Not that theyâre desperate, just that theyâre playing a game.
S24 has had senioritis since sophomore year
Not exactly the same but our school gives srs a day off on the PSAT day so they can use it to catch up on whatever they need to - apps, school work, or just sleep.
The entire school gets a surprise âholidayâ at some point in the year, and the there is Sr skip day towards the end of the year.
So S24 has now gotten three emails from schools extending the EAdeadline âespecially forâ him. This is a new one!
They extended it for only your S24 and mine too! How special.
@NiceUnparticularMan I am hoping for the clean answer as well but I think a deferral is a pretty high probability in which case I think we would just go with the existing list. The back ED2 is not a top choice but she likes it and is comfortable with it (it is also my alma mater) and she is pragmatic. I did just listen to a podcast where the Yale AD said that test scores are their best predicter of success so that is favorable to her application against TO candidates. Although you donât get much of a bump if any with SCEA, atleast the kids get their app seen first. Our school usually has about 20 apply to that ups the competition. Best of luck as we are about 6 weeks out.
Iâm officially really tired of Univ of Chicago sending mail and emails to my kid. It never ends, despite multiple requests to be removed from their email distribution list. She has a 3.22 unweighted GPAâŠthey would never admit a kid like her and she has zero desire to live in Chicago for 4 years. Itâs all clearly an attempt to increase their app numbers in order to move up the ranking list.
Where is that? I have seen schools have to add more intro level sections now that they are test optional. I donât necessarily believe high scores = high success, or more accurately low scores = low success, but I think itâs a needed tool for context. A 4.0 definitely does not reflect the quality of the teaching or depth of knowledge. At our school kids sweat to get B+/A- in math classes but I think the incidence of 4/5 in AP Calc is around 95%. Same can be true for reading comprehension - essays that have been endlessly reworked and edited canât reflect it.
They want your $$$ - We love the school but find them to be boarder line unethical when it comes to their marketing strategies. Including how they bully applicants into ED.
