25 SCEA? If so, that would indeed strike me as a lot.
Yale has a fairly distinct branding and I think it does tend to stand out to certain kids. But ultimately, last year Harvard got 9553 REA applicants, Yale 7744 SCEA. So unless your HS also had over 30 Harvard REA applicants, that would seem like an anomalous affinity for Yale.
Edit:
Huh. So a little more than Harvard is not too off. Brown got 6770 ED last year, so again that ratio is not too far off.
But I assume as you are implying this must mean some other normally popular colleges got a lot fewer ED/REA/SCEA. I guess technically basically your whole class could have applied early to an Ivy, but as soon as you expand that to the normal Ivy+, I think the math is looking kinda impossible.
Anyway, we donāt get this information about current applications, so I actually donāt know what is happening at our feederish HS. But I would be very surprised if it was concentrated like this, since anecdotally I know about people applying early to MIT, CMU, various LACs, and other notable alternatives to Ivies.
I think that is just it. They are thinking why not? I have read some chance meās on reddit and I feel like either they are delusional or are just figuring you never know.
My D24 is just the opposite with almost all of her applications for safeties and a few matches.
None of my kids wanted parties - so we havenāt had any. (Saved me money - yay) Personally, I wouldnāt throw a party if he doesnāt want it. It really is a party for him, after all.
Regionalism is not entirely dead, so that can explain why, say, the ratio of Yale to Stanford or MIT to Caltech or Michigan to Berkeley applications can vary place to place.
But of course Yaleās region is simply packed with all sorts of desirable colleges. So 7 sounds more reasonable to me, because that leaves plenty of room for other Ivies AND tech colleges AND a few people who want a big U experience AND some people who want LACs. And surely SOME people who want to go to California or whatever. Thatās been a thing forever.
Anyway, weāll see, but I would be very surprised if there was some huge shift like this everywhere.
Are you in CT? I am assuming you also see the stats of these applicants on the scattergram - are most of these kids competitive? (And are any of them athletes?)
Re UT - if you are in the North East, a lot has to do with state politics. Many around me have put their foot down agains TX and FL
Itās impossible to know what kidsā ECs are so you dont want to be judgmental and say, thats crazy, for any individual person. However, as a whole, itās mind boggling.
Based on what Iāve read here on CC, really hoping Texas schools get fewer apps.
D loved our Texas tour because of the diversity in people, food, student body, etc.
D disliked Boston College because of the lack of diversity.
Same in our house. S24 told me the other day that he would like to be alone when he opens his decision. He said heād tell me right away but wants to be alone. I asked if heāll film himself. Heās not sure.
S24 is done with The UC app last night and will submit CSU tonight. With this we only have the 2 to 3 RD apps that we plan to do. So plan for now is to take a break from apps for a few weeks and then focus on school where lot of tests coming and finals in week of Dec 18th. I wish final were a week ahead as couple of his schoolās the results would come in during this week and I would like to not have the results impact the tests.
He seems to move on as soon as he clicks submit. He says nothing I can do at this point so I am going to āforgetā about them until we hear back. I am curious to see how long this attitude will last.
At work I have multiple colleagues whose kids are also applying this year to college and I am dreading all the discussions that will happen as results come in. I am planning to think how I can go about not discussing each decision as it comes. Any ideas?
