S loves it and plays alot. Any suggestions for schools where this activity is strong? S is a junior and for right now we are looking at schools like Hendrix, Rhodes, Centre, Truman State.

I just sent my kid at Tufts his Magic Cards. My older son at Carnegie Mellon certainly could have played Magic, though mostly he played more complicated board/card games like Settlers of Catan and Dominion. Many colleges will have some sort of game playing clubs - I know found them at all the tech schools as part of visiting student activity fairs. Even Harvard had a game playing/sci fi club.

Yes most schools have Magic clubs. No worries there. My DS will be at CMU in the fall and plans to play and older S is at Northwestern and plays.

Wait. If the kid wanted to play club lacrosse or continue bee-keeping, would you call the parent an enabler?

Doesn’t “enabling” imply that this is a bad activity for the child to engage in?

Hey, where’d that post go?

I was sure ambivalent about it, but my kid kept his MTG card trove with him throughout college, and definitely set up games from time to time. Probably still does, post-graduation.

This reminds me of an scene from the early days of “The O.C.,” when it still seemed clever. A girl (Rachel Bilson) was seeing the bedroom of a boy (Adam Brody) for the first time:

(Semi-ironically) “Soooo . . . Is this where all the magic happens?”

(Earnestly) “If what you mean is the fantasy card game Magic: The Gathering, yes it is.”

Fang Jr qualified for the Pro Tour in Nagano last year. He got paid to go there. He was trying to qualify for Barcelona this year, but despite several tries, he missed it.

I don’t think most schools have Magic clubs. Most technical schools, maybe.

My son played Magic The Gathering when he was in middle school and high school. He used to go to weekend tournaments at local comic book stores, met lots of new high IQ friends, and is still friendly with several of them today.

Can’t help with your area of the country, but I know my S at Rochester Inst.Tech. plays. His friends were joking that he disappeared for a week and none of them knew where he was (playing Magic apparently). One of the student panel members at Wesleyan when we visited listed it as one of his interests.
