Parents?

My Mom and I are booking our flights, and I am in the process of booking her flight home. I was looking at the orientation schedule and wondering, if it was necessary for her to stay for more than move in day? How many parents usually come around the day after move in day?

Thank you!

My parents are actually staying Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. There is parent stuff planned for Tuesday and Wednesday and they learned from my sister that it's best to stay there one extra day to buy the dorm things that were forgotten.

Unless your mom has to be back home for some reason, I'd say she should try to at least stay until Wednesday afternoon.

Your Mom should attend the convocation which is held the day after "Move-In". It is a very uplifting and inspirational experience for both students and parents.

We moved our sons in on Monday and left Wednesday.

Dinkswizzle - agree with runforfun529 - you may want your mom to stay in case you need some dorm furnishings - shelving units, laundry basket, etc. You won't actually know what will fit in your dorm until you get there!

Have fun on move in day!

My parents are leaving Thursday morning. They actually have parents' programming until Wednesday night...all completely optional of course.

We left after the reception on the quad which was immediately after convocation. We enjoyed that extra time after the bustle of moving to walk around campus and enjoyed attending the sessions and the dinner the first night. The convocation was very special. After the reception our D was ready for us to go and her roommates' parents did not stay for the second day. But there were a lot of parents that did. D had her own car to run errands.

You should show your mom the list of events for the days that have parent stuff, from what I see they last until Wednesday.

Possibly more important than having your parents attend orientation stuff is for them to make sure you have everything you need. If you're from out of state, which I assume you are since you're flying in, and your parents rented a car, there should be a few hours in there for them to drive you to Target to buy stuff. There's a Costco to the North and a Sam's Club to the South (next to Target) for bulk items like water or chicken (I love chicken, so I included this). Things on campus are fairly expensive.

HiWei; Do you mean raw chicken? Do you find it practical to cook for yourself?

Haha, it was actually more of a joke. However if you did want to buy raw chicken (or the kind you just heat up) there is nothing I can think of that should stop you. Every dorm has a nice kitchen with a fridge and freezer big enough to accommodate. Lots of freshmen cook even though they have a fairly complete dining plan because its fun! Just make sure you have cookware (pots, pans, dishes) because my dorm didn't have that :(

"Haha, it was actually more of a joke"

Ooops! Perhaps you can tell I'm a mom...or maybe not...

thank you all for the advice!

yeah, i'll make sure she stays around for a few days :) we have family right outside of Durham, so staying an extra day isn't a problem

thanks again!

We stayed through the convocation, and really appreciated all of the programs they had for the parents, as well as getting to know the layout of the campus!

My parents (English not being their native language) pretty much left after they helped me move in. They'd already done the whole college thing with my two older siblings, and they didn't think anything of the activities. I don't think they really felt like they missed out.

I thought my parents were going to stay at least until convocation when I moved in...until they called me at 8:00am on the day of from Maryland haha. Turns out they couldn't sleep so checked out of the hotel at 3am and decided to go home. Oh well, they really didn't miss anything and we pretty much got all the goodbyes out of the way the night before.

Haha, my parents just helped me pack and then they got the hell out of there.
