I am OOS, from NH, and was wondering really how many people they take OOS. I have good stats and have good ECs, but if there is virtually no chance for OOS to get aid, I’m not sure if I should apply.
I have a 5.03 GPA out of 5.40 (my school has weird GPAs) and a 33 composite. I’m captain of a varsity team and have tons of community service hours and leadership positions, so I think I’m qualified, but again, will OOS detract from chances dramatically? is it worth it?
You can look at information about the Park Class of 2020 here: https://park.ncsu.edu/class-2020/, which includes a link to the bios. It’s an extremely competitive scholarship, and they seem to put a lot of emphasis on students who are passionate about some kind of service and who have proven leadership experience in that service. It seems about 1/3 to 1/2 chosen are OOS each year. My opinion is that a student who gets a “school endorsement” has an advantage over students who “self-endorse”, but I have absolutely no evidence of that. I could be completely wrong. Is it worth it? The application definitely takes a lot of work, but it’s an amazing award. Keep in mind that depending on your intended major and department, there are other scholarships for which you might qualify that can be pretty substantial, especially if you also qualify for need-based aid.
I was just at the open house and heard a whole speech on this scholarship. The readers do not see who self-nominates or who is school-nominated. There is no difference between them when applying. 1/3 of recipients come from out of state but only 1/3 of applicants are from out of state so it isn’t much more competitive for out of state students.
I’m so nervous. Decisions come out Monday!!!
Where did they say when decisions will be sent?
