Parking at Lawrence

Yeah...it is a dumb question, but I need to know. Can freshman have cars at Lawrence? Also, what is the parking situation like? Prices?

Thanks!

You can have a car but parking spaces are limited. I don't know what the exact costs are for the 24 hr permit, but some students, to avoid the permit fees, prefer to park their cars in the big garages which are only a 5-10 minute walk from campus. Frankly you really don't need a car if you go to Lawrence, just leave it at home.

Cars are discouraged at Lawrence and only a handful of student parking permits are assigned -- for upperclass students. My recollection is that you can get a parking permit downtown (the parking garages/ramps to which kassos refers) for about $50 per term.

D has not needed a car her freshman year. We are 5 hours away and she has gotten rides or we have dropped her off and retrieved her for breaks. There is a shuttle to the mall each weekend. We are discussing letting her have a car in the next year or two but it's not out of necessity -- more convenience in her mind but I see it as a hassle in terms of taking care of it and the cost of maintaining it.

Unless for some reason you want to drive home every single weekend (I'm skeptical of that), there's no good reason to have a car on campus.

Your parents should cut you a check for the the money they save from not having to pay your insurnace. With that good 100-200 dollars a month you could buy things that are of far greater value to you as a student here,

such as expensive beer :D
