Parliamentary Debate Competition Heats Up

<p>With two scheduled debates left prior to Nationals, the Princeton parliamentary debate team of Zayn Siddique '11 & Daniel Rauch '10 is in first place nationally. A complete listing of the teams and their current standings can be found here:</p>

<p>Princeton debaters have a long history of success in national competitions. The first college debating society in the U.S. was founded at Princeton in the late 18th century.</p>

<p>Last year, Princeton won the College of the Year Debate award while Siddique took the Novice of the Year award. This year Nationals will be held at Mount Holyoke College on the 24th and 25th of April. Following that event the national team leaders will receive the Team of the Year award, while awards for top speaker, top college and top novice will also be granted.</p>

<p>College debating is wonderful preparation for many careers and helps to sharpen both research and analytical skills. For those whose futures might involve public speaking it is particularly valuable.</p>

<p>"Princeton’s debate team recently ended yet another successful season with a slew of top honors. </p>

<p>Most notably, the team’s president emeritus Dan Rauch ’10 and current president Zayn Siddique ’11 won the American Parliamentary Debate Association’s (APDA) Team of the Year Award, the APDA’s highest honor.</p>

<p>Rauch and Siddique are the youngest team ever to take home the award, and they also won the prize by the largest margin ever in the award’s nearly 30-year history.</p>

<p>Rauch also won the ADPA’s Speaker of the Year award, breaking the record for highest absolute score.</p>

<p>“It was a great year,” Rauch said. “We were really lucky.”</p>

<p>The Yale team consisting of Rohrbach & May won the National Championship this year. Congratulations to them as well! </p>

<p>In the history of the American Parliamentary Debate Association, Princeton debaters have done extremely well. The ADPA consists of about 50 universities including all members of the Ivy League, Duke, MIT, Stanford and many other well known institutions.</p>

<p>The tryout is a 5 minute speech on a topic chosen from a list of about 5-10. You have 10 minutes to prepare.</p>
